Museu do Côa Interior - A História Interminável do Côa / Riding Portugal

After walking around the outside of the Côa Valley Museum and spending some time admiring the landscape overlooking the valley, it was finally time to go inside. The transition is curious. Outside, light dominates everything. Inside, the atmosphere changes completely. My first impression was of entering a kind of large bunker. The concrete corridors, the massive walls, and the lighting create a feeling of robustness and isolation very different from the landscape we had just left behind.

Depois de termos percorrido o exterior do Museu do Côa e passado algum tempo a apreciar a paisagem sobre o vale, chegou finalmente o momento de entrar. A transição é curiosa. Cá fora, a luz domina tudo. Lá dentro, o ambiente muda por completo. A primeira impressão que tive foi a de estar a entrar numa espécie de bunker de grandes dimensões. Os corredores em betão, as paredes maciças e a iluminação criam uma sensação de robustez e isolamento muito diferente da paisagem que tínhamos acabado de deixar para trás.

It was precisely near the reception desk that the first setback of the day arose. When asking about visits to the rock engravings located in the valley, near the river, we were informed that these visits required prior booking. I was unaware of this detail and, unfortunately, all the sessions available for that day were already full. I confess I was a little disappointed. Being there, so close to the original sites, it was difficult not to feel some frustration at missing this opportunity and not being able to show my little one that piece of history in person.

Foi precisamente junto ao balcão da receção que surgiu o primeiro contratempo do dia. Ao perguntar pelas visitas às gravuras rupestres localizadas no vale, junto ao rio, fomos informados de que essas visitas exigiam marcação prévia. Eu desconhecia esse detalhe e, infelizmente, todas as sessões disponíveis para aquele dia já estavam completas. Confesso que fiquei um pouco desapontada. Estando ali, tão perto dos locais originais, era difícil não sentir alguma frustração por perder essa oportunidade e não poder mostrar à pequena ao vivo e a cores aquele pedaço de historia.

Even so, we quickly realized that the museum visit, in itself, justified the time invested. Before even reaching the first rooms, we ended up getting lost for a few minutes in a space with mirrors and reflections. It was one of those unexpected and very fun moments. Between attempts to find the best angle and some laughs along the way, we ended up taking some very funny family photos. These, however, remain only in the photo album at home.

Ainda assim, rapidamente percebemos que a visita ao museu, por si só, justificava o tempo investido. Antes mesmo de chegarmos às primeiras salas , acabámos por nos perder durante alguns minutos num espaço com espelhos e jogos de reflexos. Foi daqueles momentos inesperados e muito divertido. Entre tentativas de encontrar o melhor ângulo e algumas gargalhadas pelo caminho, acabámos por tirar fotografias de família bastante engraçadas. Essas, contudo, ficam guardadas apenas no álbum cá de casa.

The route is organized into different rooms identified by letters, each dedicated to specific themes related to the Côa Valley and rock art. The room that most caught my attention during this visit was Room F, entitled "The Neverending Story of the Côa".

O percurso está organizado por diferentes salas identificadas por letras, cada uma dedicada a temas específicos relacionados com o Vale do Côa e a arte rupestre. A sala que mais me chamou a atenção durante esta visita foi a Sala F, intitulada "A História Interminável do Côa".

The space has several replicas of engraved panels and different interpretive elements that help to understand the enormous number of figures identified throughout the valley. Some of the pieces on display impress with the number of overlapping lines, revealing a complexity that can hardly be perceived in a simple photograph.

O espaço tem várias réplicas de painéis gravados e diferentes elementos interpretativos que ajudam a compreender a enorme quantidade de figuras identificadas ao longo do vale. Algumas das peças exibidas impressionam pela quantidade de traços sobrepostos, revelando uma complexidade que dificilmente se percebe numa simples fotografia.

One of the exhibits that took us longer consisted of several small stones spread out on tables, accompanied by powerful magnifying glasses. At first glance, they seemed like common rock fragments. However, as we zoomed in, small engravings, almost invisible to the naked eye, began to appear. Some were so subtle that I wondered how many would go unnoticed without the proper equipment.

Um dos núcleos que nos fez demorar mais tempo consistia em várias pequenas pedras distribuídas sobre mesas, acompanhadas por lupas potentes. À primeira vista pareciam fragmentos de rocha comuns. No entanto, ao aproximar a lente, começavam a surgir pequenas gravações quase invisíveis a olho nu. Algumas eram tão discretas que me perguntei quantas passariam despercebidas sem equipamento adequado.

It was precisely at that moment that I realized the enormous amount of work done by the researchers and specialists who studied these engravings. Observing a single stone already required concentration. Imagining the analysis of thousands of fragments scattered throughout an entire region gives an idea of ​​the scale of this effort.

Foi precisamente nesse momento que me ocorreu o enorme trabalho realizado pelos investigadores e especialistas que estudaram estas gravuras. Observar uma única pedra já exigia concentração. Imaginar a análise de milhares de fragmentos espalhados por uma região inteira dá uma ideia da dimensão desse esforço.

The replicas never completely replace the experience of observing the originals in their natural context, but they help to perceive details that would probably be missed on a quick visit to the site. In the end, despite the initial disappointment at not being able to visit the rock art sites along the river, we left the Côa Museum with the feeling of having learned much more about what is engraved on the rocks of the valley and about the work necessary to reveal and interpret these traces. It was a different visit than we had planned, but no less interesting for that.

As réplicas nunca substituem completamente a experiência de observar os originais no seu contexto natural, mas ajudam a perceber detalhes que provavelmente escapariam numa visita rápida ao terreno. No final, apesar da desilusão inicial por não conseguirmos visitar os núcleos rupestres junto ao rio, saímos do Museu do Côa com a sensação de ter aprendido bastante mais sobre aquilo que está gravado nas rochas do vale e sobre o trabalho necessário para revelar e interpretar esses vestígios. Foi uma visita diferente da que tínhamos planeado, mas nem por isso menos interessante.
