Museu do Côa - Exterior / Riding Portugal

COVER.jpg

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

This was the reason that brought us to this part of the country, the famous Côa Museum, and the arrival was one of those moments when I realized that the way it was conceived and built made the building itself compete for attention with the surrounding landscape. Even before thinking about the exhibitions and what awaited us inside, we spent some time walking around the outside, simply observing the place and how the museum was inserted into this location.

PT

The structure appears discreetly on the hillside, with modern, sober, and quite geometric lines, with large concrete surfaces that contrast with the irregular relief of the surrounding mountains. As we circled the museum, the architecture revealed different perspectives. In some places, the external corridors created narrow passages where light entered in a very controlled way, drawing long shadows on the ground. There was a moment when I stood still for a few seconds, just looking at one of those passages, where two people appeared in the background like small silhouettes cut out by the intense brightness of the exterior. I thought that a photograph could convey the idea, but nothing compares to witnessing the event in motion. In any case, I tried, just so you could get an idea of the view I had.

PT

Inevitably, my gaze always ended up wandering to the landscape. The museum is located on a high point and benefits from a wide view over the valley. From there, it's possible to follow the course of the Côa River along the bottom of the depression, appearing as a blue strip that meanders between dry, undulating slopes. The contrast between the green near the banks and the more golden tones of the hills makes the landscape particularly interesting at that time of day.

We walked slowly through the outdoor spaces and along the natural viewpoints that form beside the building. The wind was felt from time to time, bringing some relief from the heat that was already beginning to be noticeable. There weren't many people outside. Some people were taking photos, others remained leaning against the walls, silently appreciating the view.

PT

Among the various elements scattered around the area, two sculptures of goats in shades of blue stood out, placed facing the valley. They are impossible to ignore and end up functioning almost as another observation point of the landscape. I saw several people approach to photograph them before turning their attention back to the river and the slopes.

I particularly liked this first impression of the Côa Museum. Even without entering, there was already an obvious connection between the building and the territory it seeks to interpret. The exterior serves not only as access to the museum, but is part of the experience. We ended up spending more time than we had planned walking around the space and observing the landscape. Only then did we go inside, but the feeling that remained from this first tour was that the valley deserved as much attention as the rooms that awaited us inside.

PT

Gostei particularmente desta primeira impressão do Museu do Côa.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

Judging by your photos and location, this is a unique museum. As you rightly say, it's worth seeing both inside and out, and its surroundings are equally important. Best regards, @onyfest

Simply love the minimalism of the place. I've never been a museum fan, although I won't skip one, but this definitely caught my attention!

I can say that the architecture of this museum is really special and beautiful, and its geometric shape attracted me. Also, the outdoor space of the museum and the surrounding mountains and waters make the view even more extraordinary. And how beautiful is the combination of beauties together

Love how you captured the light in those corridors and the blue goat sculptures. It really feels like the architecture is just a frame for that incredible view of the river.
