Casa Di Giulietta - Verona / Road Trip Through Italy

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Looking around and realizing you're standing in front of Juliet's House is one of those experiences that, whether you like it or not, comes loaded with expectations. Even if you've never been a particular fan of the Romeo and Juliet story, there's something about this place that touches you. Maybe it's the weight of the story or simply curiosity. Or maybe it's just the simple fact that you're in Verona, on a sunny day, with time and a desire to wander :)

Olhar em volta e dar conta que estamos em frente à Casa di Giulietta é uma daquelas experiências que, queiramos quer não, já vem carregada de expectativas. Mesmo que nunca tenhas sido particularmente fã da história de Romeu e Julieta, há qualquer coisa neste lugar que te toca. Talvez seja o peso da história ou simplesmente curiosidade. Ou talvez seja até pelo simples facto de estares em Verona, num dia solarengo, com tempo e vontade de vaguear :)

I arrived and crossed a narrow passage without quite knowing where I was, but I soon realized that this path led to the courtyard, and there it was, the old facade with most of the bricks exposed, maintaining a warm and irregular brown tone, with that medieval air that needs no explanation. Nothing ostentatious or excessive. It's a house that seems to want to go unnoticed, and perhaps that's exactly what makes it special.

Cheguei e atravessei uma passagem estreita sem ainda saber lá muito bem onde estava, mas logo percebi que aquele caminho dava acesso ao pátio, e ali chegada lá estava ela, a fachada antiga já com a maior parte dos tijolos à mostra, mantendo um tom castanho quente e irregular, com aquele ar medieval que não precisa de grandes explicações. Nada de ostentação nem muitos exageros. É uma casa que parece querer passar despercebida, e talvez seja exatamente isso que a torna especial.

As one might expect and easily anticipate, the courtyard was packed with people from all over the world, their cameras pointed and snapping pictures in all directions, with shy, knowing smiles. In a somewhat hidden corner, beneath the famous balcony, stood the bronze statue of Juliet, its chest now bearing a shiny patina, the result of thousands of hands that believe, or pretend to believe, that a touch there brings good luck in love. In this case, I only observed from a distance, not even getting close enough to take a more detailed photo, let alone touch it, such was the crowd. And truth be told, I don't believe love needs luck, because I believe that far beyond luck, love is a process of building, sharing, understanding, passion, companionship, and many other things far more important than luck :)

Como já seria de prever e facilmente de antecipar, o pátio estava à pinha, com pessoas de todos os cantos do mundo com as suas câmaras apontadas e a disparar para todo o lado, com sorrisos meio envergonhados e cúmplices, e num canto meio disfarçado, por baixo da famosa varanda, a estátua de Julieta, em bronze, já com aquela patina brilhante no peito, resultado de milhares de mãos que acreditam, ou fingem acreditar, que um toque ali traz sorte ao amor, e neste caso fiquei somente a observar à distância, nem sequer me aproximei para tirar uma foto mais pormenorizada, quanto mais tocar, tamanha era a afluência, e verdade seja dita, não acredito que precise de sorte ao amor, porque acredito que muito para além da sorte, o amor é um processo de construção, partilha, compreensão, paixão, companheirismo e muitas mais coisas bem mais importantes do que a sorte :)

Still there, in that small, prominent space on the old facade, was the small, discreet balcony, the famous balcony immortalized by a tale based on a true story, they say. Once there, physically present and looking directly at it, I can say that it's nothing as grand as popular imagination sometimes portrays it. And that was invigorating. It's easy to imagine someone leaning against something there, listening to a voice coming from below, but it's also easy to see that the strength of the place lies not in historical accuracy but in the story we choose to tell.

Ainda ali naquele pequeno espaço e saliente na antiga fachada, a pequena e discreta varanda, a tão famosa varanda eternizada por um conto baseado n uma histórica verídica, dizem. Uma vez ali, de corpo presente a olhar diretamente para ela, posso adiantar que não é nada de grandioso como o imaginário popular às vezes nos vende. E isso foi refrescante. É fácil imaginar alguém ali apoiado, a ouvir uma voz vinda de baixo, mas também é fácil perceber que a força do lugar não está na veracidade histórica mas sim na história que escolhemos contar.

One thing that immediately catches the eye is the walls covered in little pieces of paper with messages, promises, initials scribbled with pen or knife, some naive, others even poetic, many clearly written on the spur of the moment. I think that, deep down, it's part of the atmosphere, especially in that space that lives on the raw emotion of the people who pass by, encouraged by the letters of history etched into their thoughts.
If people find space to attach padlocks to the railings on any bridge for romantic purposes, imagine that :)

Uma coisa que salta logo à vista são as paredes cobertas de papelinhos com mensagens, promessas, iniciais riscadas com caneta ou canivete, algumas ingénuas, outras mesmo poéticas, muitas claramente escritas no impulso do momento. Acho que no fundo, faz parte do ambiente, principalmente ali naquele espaço que vive da emoção crua das pessoas que por ali passam, incentivadas pelas letras da história cravadas no pensamento.
Se numa qualquer ponte as pessoas encontram espaço para cravar os gradeamentos de cadeados com propósitos românticos, imaginem ali :)

The sun was high but didn't reach the patio, leaving a certain humidity in the air that gave even more life to the earthy tones of the house. Even with so many people present, there was a strange feeling of collective pause, as if for a moment everyone was part of the same story.

O sol estava alto mas nãochegava ao pátio, deixando no ar uma certa humidade que dava ainda mais vida aos tons terrosos da casa. Mesmo com tanta gente ali presente, havia uma estranha sensação de pausa coletiva, como se por instantes todos fizessem parte do mesmo enredo.

I left there with the feeling of having visited a place that functions more as a symbol than as a monument. Juliet's House is not about the house itself, or about architecture or aesthetics, about what we project onto it, about the human will, eternal, stubborn and above all believing in stories bigger than ourselves.
One thing is certain, I left there with a smile :)

Saí dali com a sensação de ter visitado um lugar que funciona mais como símbolo do que como monumento. A Casa di Giulietta não é sobre a casa em si, ou sobre arquitetura ou estética sobre aquilo que projetamos nela, sobre a vontade humana, eterna, teimosa e acima de tudo crente em acreditar em histórias maiores do que nós.
Uma coisa é certa, saí dali com um sorriso :)
