Baião - Sub Região do Tâmega - Centro da Vila / Riding Portugal

We arrived in Baião on an unusual day for the season. Spring on the calendar, but the heat already reminded us of our beloved summer, the kind that forces you to seek shade and rest a little. The sky was clear, and since there wasn't a breath of wind, the sun was already starting to burn.

Chegamos a Baião num dia estranho para a estação. Primavera no calendário, mas o calor já a lembrar o nosso querido verão, daqueles que obrigam a procurar uma sobra e a descansar um pouco. O céu estava limpo, e como não corria uma ponta de vento, o sol já começava a queimar.

The village gradually reveals itself, showing itself as you walk through the simple, clean streets, but with that slight misalignment that comes from growth over time. Like the more modern buildings among those older, rustic houses that always mark the identity of any locality, ending up becoming a mixture between modern constructions and those older little houses. There's a noticeable effort to modernize, but without completely eliminating what was already there and which is the basis for what comes next. It doesn't always work, but here it's minimally balanced.

A vila vai-se mostrando aos bocadinhos, vai-se revelando à medida que se caminha pelas ruas simples, limpas, mas com aquele ligeiro desalinhamento que vem do crescimento ao longo do tempo. Como os prédios mais modernos entre aquelas casas mais antigas e rústicas que marcam sempre a identidade de qualquer localidade, acabando por se tornar numa mistura entre construções modernas e as tais casinhas mais antigas. Nota-se um certo esforço em modernizar, mas sem eliminar totalmente o que já lá estava antes e que é a base para o que surge a seguir. Nem sempre resulta, mas aqui até que ficou minimamente equilibrado.

What caught my attention most were the trees that we could find everywhere, laden with flowers in vibrant shades of purple, pink, some white – simply beautiful. The air had a light, sweet scent, difficult to pinpoint precisely, but constant (it was the scent of flowers). It mingled with the warmth and the light breeze that could be felt at well-spaced intervals, but enough to spread the aroma.

O que mais me chamou a atenção foram as árvores que podemos encontrar por todo o lado, carregadas de flores em tons vivos, roxos, rosas, alguns brancos, simplesmente lindas. O ar tinha um cheiro leve e doce, difícil de identificar com precisão, mas constante (era o cheiro das flores). Misturava-se com o calor e com o vento ligeiro que se ia sentindo em intervalos muito espaçados, mas o suficiente para espalhar o aroma.

We ended up passing through the São Bartolomeu Garden by chance, although it's almost inevitable when you set out to explore, as it's in a very central area. We went to the fountain to wet our hands and climbed the stairs. It's a well-maintained space, with many stone benches, paths, and enough shade to escape the more direct heat. Some people were sitting in silence, others were chatting, and some children were playing on the park's swings.
In these places, people end up taking very good care of public spaces, and it's always a pleasure for those who come from outside to be able to enjoy such well-kept and welcoming spaces. There was no rush anywhere, actually.

Acabámos por passar pelo Jardim de São Bartolomeu por acaso, apesar de ser quase inevitável quando se parte à descoberta, pois encontra-se numa zona muito central. Fomos até à fonte molhar as mãos e subimos as escadas. É um espaço cuidado, com muitos bancos de pedra, caminhos e sombra suficiente para escapar ao calor mais direto. Algumas pessoas estavam sentadas, em silêncio, outras conversavam e algumas crianças brincavam nos baloiços do parque.
Nestes locais as pessoas acabam por cuidar muito bem dos espaços públicos e é sempre um prazer para quem vem de fora poder usufruir de espaços assim tão asseados e acolhedores. Não havia pressa em lado nenhum, na verdade.

I sat down too, some distance from the others who were there. It's not a large garden or full of details, but it's very peaceful. It functions more as a point of balance within the village.
Baião has a long history, linked to human presence since ancient times, yet humble enough not to try to salvage evidence from the past to become a spectacle in the present.

Sentei-me também, a alguma distância dos outros que por ali andavam. Não é um jardim grande nem cheio de detalhes, mas é bastante tranquilo. Funciona mais como ponto de equilíbrio dentro da vila.
Baião tem uma história longa, ligada à presença humana desde tempos antigos, mas ainda assim humilde o suficiente para não tentar resgatar do passado as evidências para se tornar num espetáculo no presente.

There was a specific moment that stayed with me. A man crossed the garden slowly, greeting two or three people along the way, without really stopping, everything very natural, almost automatic. For him, this wasn't a place to visit, but perhaps his daily stop on his way home.
There are areas of the village where the identity is somewhat lost, and during brief walks it seems we are no longer in Baião, where the mixture of old and new doesn't find balance and ends up becoming strange.

Houve um momento específico que me ficou na memória. Um homem atravessou o jardim devagar, cumprimentando duas ou três pessoas pelo caminho, sem parar realmente, tudo muito natural, quase automático. Aquilo para ele não era um local de visita, mas talvez o seu local de passagem diário a caminho de casa.
Há zonas da vila onde a identidade se perde um pouco e durante breves passadas parece que já não estamos em Baião, onde a mistura entre antigo e novo não encontra equilíbrio e acaba por se tornar estranho.

When we got up to continue, the heat was still present. The flowers remained vibrant, almost excessively so for that time of year, but the weather is so strange that soon nothing will seem strange anymore.

Quando nos levantamos para continuar, o calor continuava presente. As flores mantinham-se vibrantes, quase em excesso para aquela estação do ano, mas o tempo anda tão estranho que em breve já nada parecerá estranho.
