I'd wanted to go to Marialva for a long time; I can't quite explain why, but perhaps it was a curiosity sparked by the photographs I'd seen over time, and of course, because it always seemed like one of those places that fascinate me and awaken in me a crazy desire to visit and see it with my own eyes. We arrived in the mid-afternoon, with the sun already high but with that pleasant temperature. The light wasn't yet ideal for getting those clean, unexposed photos, but it had to do, and the wind blew to help with the walk.
Believe it or not, it's much more beautiful than I imagined.

Já há muito tempo que queria ir a Marialva, não sei bem explicar o porquê, mas talvez tenha sido uma curiosidade causada pelas fotografias que fui vendo ao longo do tempo, e claro, porque sempre me pareceu ser um daqueles locais que me fascinam e que despertam em mim uma vontade louca de visitar e ver com os meus próprios olhos. Chegámos a meio da tarde, com o sol já alto mas com aquela temperatura agradável. A luz ainda não era a ideal para obter aquelas fotos limpas sem muita exposição, mas teve de servir, e o vento corria para ajudar a caminhada.
Pasmem-se, é bem mais bonito do que imaginei.

We parked before the climb, in a place where the road starts to get narrower, making it impossible to drive a car, but still very close to the little square and the castle. From there we did everything on foot, which was certainly the best decision. Marialva has to be explored slowly.

Estacionámos antes da subida, num local onde a estrada começa a tornar-se mais estreita onde é impossível circular de carro, mas ainda assim muito próximo da praceta e do castelo. A partir daí fizemos tudo a pé, certamente foi a melhor decisão. Marialva tem de se percorrer devagarinho.

The first impression was of silence. Not total silence, but the kind of silence that allows you to hear the wind or a gate creaking in the distance, footsteps, and the occasional random conversation coming from inside the houses. There wasn't much movement on the streets. In fact, it felt like we were alone.

A primeira impressão foi de silêncio. Não um silêncio total, mas aquele silêncio que nos permite ouvir o vento ou um portão a ranger ao longe, passos e algumas conversas aleatórias que se ouvem vindas do interior das casas. Não se via grande movimento nas ruas. Aliás parecia que estavamos sozinhos.

The houses are impeccably preserved. Stone upon stone. Nothing stands out much. And, at the same time, it's not an artificial setting. There are signs of wear, imperfections, marks of the passage of time, plants I hadn't seen in years. I found myself constantly stopping. A door. A window. An alley. You want to photograph everything, but you also want to keep some images just for memory, without filter or framing.

As casas estão impecavelmente preservadas. Pedra sobre pedra. Nada destoa muito. E, ao mesmo tempo, não é um cenário artificial. Há sinais de desgaste, imperfeições, marcas próprias do passar do tempo, plantas que já não via há anos. Dei por mim a parar constantemente. Uma porta. Uma janela. Uma ruela. Apetece fotografar tudo, mas também apetece guardar algumas imagens só para memória, sem filtro nem enquadramento.

As we climbed, I thought about the history of the place. Marialva was, for centuries, an important point in the organization of the territory, with administrative and defensive functions that are no longer visible today. It passed through different hands, experienced periods of importance and abandonment.

Enquanto subíamos, pensei na história do lugar. Marialva foi, durante séculos, um ponto importante na organização do território, com funções administrativas e defensivas que hoje já não são visíveis . Passou por diferentes mãos, conheceu períodos de relevância e de abandono.

At the same time, there's something strange about this almost exemplary preservation. There are several local accommodations, well integrated, discreet. But we saw practically no one, nor any clear signs of active daily life. Perhaps it was the time, perhaps the day. Or perhaps it's just like that. A village that maintains itself, but with a lighter presence of people.

Ao mesmo tempo, há algo de estranho nesta preservação quase exemplar. Existem vários alojamentos locais, bem integrados, discretos. Mas não vimos praticamente ninguém, nem sinais claros de quotidiano ativo. Talvez tenha sido a hora, talvez o dia. Ou talvez seja mesmo assim. Uma aldeia que se mantém, mas com uma presença de pessoas mais leve.

At a certain point, near the highest point, we found a small chapel. Simple, with straight lines. It was closed. The wooden door showed signs of use, but also of being cared for. I stood there for a few minutes, observing my surroundings.

A certa altura, já perto do ponto mais alto, encontramos uma pequena capela. Simples, com linhas direitas . Estava fechada. A porta de madeira mostrava sinais de uso, mas também de ser cuidada. Fiquei ali alguns minutos, a observar à minha volta.

It was perhaps the clearest moment of the day. There was no great revelation, but there was a kind of alignment. The village, the silence, the walking route, everything made sense. It doesn't always happen.

Foi talvez o momento mais claro do dia. Não houve nenhuma grande revelação, mas houve uma espécie de alinhamento. A aldeia, o silêncio, o percurso a pé, tudo fazia sentido. Nem sempre acontece.

On the way down, I noticed better the details that had escaped me on the way up. A stone bench next to a door. An improvised vase. An old lock. Small things that show that, despite everything, someone continues to live there, even if discreetly.
There are places that don't need to explain themselves completely. Marialva is one of them. It doesn't give itself away all at once. And that's why I have more to show you.

Ao descer, reparei melhor nos detalhes que me tinham escapado à subida. Um banco de pedra junto a uma porta. Um vaso improvisado. Uma fechadura antiga. Pequenas coisas que mostram que, apesar de tudo, alguém continua a viver ali, mesmo que de forma discreta.
Há lugares que não precisam de se explicar completamente. Marialva é um deles. Não se entrega toda de uma vez. E por isso mesmo, tenho mais para vos mostrar.
