The beautiful Illas Cíes (Galician for “Cíes Islands”) are a must-see for anyone visiting Vigo, Galicia. It is a Spanish archipelago, and we took a family trip (my mom, my partner, and I) to visit one of the islands. It was truly an adventure. My mom fulfilled one of her dreams—for several reasons—the weather surprised us at every turn, and honestly, we had a very rewarding day.

Las hermosas Illas Cíes (gallego para "Islas Cíes") son una parada obligatoria para quien venga a hacer turismo en Vigo, Galicia. Es un archipiélago español, y realizamos un viaje familiar (mamá, mi pareja y yo) para conocer una de las islas. Realmente fue toda una aventura, mamá cumplió uno de sus sueños -por varios motivos-, el clima nos sorprendió en todo momento, y sinceramente, pasamos un día muy gratificante.

We live in Vigo and bought tickets for the trip on the Mar de Ons fleet, which cost €24 per person. We started in June last year. At that time of year, summer is just around the corner and, with a lot of hope and optimism, you can enjoy decent weather. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes.

Nosotros vivimos en Vigo y compramos boletos para el viaje, fue en la flota de Mar de Ons y tuvo costo de 24€ por persona. Fuimos empezando en junio del año pasado, para esa temporada el verano está próximo en la esquina y con mucha esperanza y optimismo, se puede disfrutar de un tiempo decente. La duración del viaje es de 45 minutos aproximadamente.

Boats also depart from the port in Vigo to Cangas, another beautiful tourist destination. During that week of our trip, there were several sunny days, but we were unlucky that morning as it was very gray and even raining. It was cold and windy, and it seemed like everything was against us, but we set off anyway. Without fear.

Desde el puerto en Vigo también salen barcos a Cangas, otro hermoso destino turístico. Para esa semana de nuestro viaje hubo varios días soleados pero tuvimos la mala suerte de que esa mañana el día estuviese muy gris y hasta con lluvia. Hacía frío, había viento, parecía que todo estaba en nuestra contra pero nos lanzamos de igual manera. Sin miedo.

We were very excited on the boat. It was too windy to stay on deck, but some passengers dared to stay there anyway. Apart from nature, my mom was the main model on this trip, haha. You'll see her a lot in the photos. She enjoyed it 100%, without a doubt. Here you can see her disembarking on the island. Notice that she is wearing a cute hat...

Estábamos muy emocionados en el barco, hacía muchísimo viento como para estar en la cubierta pero aún así algunos pasajeros se atrevieron a estar ahí. Aparte de la naturaleza, mamá fue la principal modelo en este viaje jeje, verán que aparece mucho en las fotos. Ella lo disfrutó al 100% sin duda alguna. Acá la pueden ver desembarcando ya en la isla, noten que lleva puesto un lindo sombrero...

On the island, you can go trekking, swim at different beaches, eat at restaurants, and camp for as long as you want. Our trip was a same-day round trip. We brought our own food and wanted to do as much trekking as possible. It was still too cold to swim. When we disembarked, it was very windy, and I found it hard to bear. I think my mother was so happy that she didn't notice the cold. She was wearing a dress and sandals and felt perfect. You can tell she gets very excited about visiting new places.

En la isla hay opción de hacer trekking, bañarse en distintas playas, comer en restaurantes y campings para quedarse por el tiempo que se desee. Nuestro viaje fue ida y vuelta del mismo día, llevamos nuestra comida y quisimos hacer todo el trekking posible. Era muy frío aún como para bañarse. Cuando desembarcamos, hacía muchísimo viento, a mi me costó soportarlo. Yo creo que mi madre estaba tan feliz que se le inhibió la sensación. Ella tenía puesto un vestido y sandalias y se sentía perfecta, se nota que le emociona mucho conocer lugares nuevos.

So, once we started our trek, we ventured into the island with its beautiful view. Despite the clouds and the gray day, it was wonderful to be in a place with much less pollution, breathing fresh air, listening to the waves breaking on the shore. It was on this rocky walk that the funniest thing of the day happened. My boyfriend, who is from Vigo, has been to the islands many times before, and he told us stories about his previous trips. He told us that this area is called “the aquarium” because at night you can see many fish there, even octopuses, and the biodiversity is very beautiful. Well, my mom listened to all this with great excitement and asked us to take pictures of her there, when the wind blew so hard that her pretty hat flew away and was lost on the beach. It was a shame, we couldn't get it back (although we tried), and it became a joke that some octopus must have taken it hahaha

Así que empezado nuestro trekking, nos adentramos a la isla con su hermosa vista. A pesar de las nubes y el día tan gris, era precioso estar en un lugar con mucha menos contaminación, respirando aire puro, escuchando las olas romper en la costa. Fue en este paseo rocoso donde sucedió lo más gracioso del día. Mi novio, que es nativo de Vigo, ha ido a las islas muchas veces antes, y nos contaba sus historias de los viajes ya hechos. Nos decía que esta zona la llaman "el acuario", que de noche se ven muchos peces ahí, incluso pulpos, es muy linda la biodiversidad que hay. Pues mamá escuchaba todo esto muy ilusionada, y pidió que le hiciéramos fotos ahí, cuando sopló tan fuerte el viento que salió volando su lindo sombrero y se perdió por la playa. Fue una pena, no pudimos recuperarlo (aunque intentamos) y quedó como chiste que algún pulpo se lo habrá quedado jajajaja

We enjoyed trekking up the mountain while getting to know the island with the other tourists. As a family, we LOVE nature. Although the island welcomed us with dark skies, cold temperatures, strong winds, and even a good amount of rain, to our delight, the sun came out and, thank God, the skies cleared up. Now we could begin our adventure, full of energy. We felt lucky.

Estuvimos disfrutando el trekking montaña arriba mientras conocíamos las isla con los otros turistas, en familia AMAMOS la naturaleza. Aunque la isla nos recibió con cielo oscuro, mucho frío, mucho viento y hasta un buen rato de lluvia. Pero para nuestra alegría, luego salió el sol, y gracias a Dios se despejaron los cielos. Ahora sí empezábamos a tener una aventura completa y más llena de energía. Nos sentimos afortunados.

A wide variety of flowers and colors delighted our eyes as the gray clouds disappeared and the sun came out. It was beautiful. Crystal clear waters, beautiful mountains, seagulls flying and accompanying us. A gentler, cooler wind.

Una gran variedad de flores y colores nos alegraron la vista con la ida de las nubes grises y la gran salida del sol. Era hermoso. Aguas cristalinas, montañas preciosas, gaviotas volando y acompañándonos. Viento más suave y fresco.

It was mating season, and when seagulls lay their eggs, the island is teeming with birds, although they isolate themselves to care for their future chicks. However, on the way we came across this egg from a chick that had already hatched. They are very curious and striking, with spots like a banana.

Era la época de apareamiento y cuando las gaviotas ponen sus huevos, la isla está repleta de las aves aunque ellas se aíslan para cuidar de sus futuros polluelos. Sin embargo, en el camino nos encontramos con este huevo de un polluelo que ya había nacido. Son super curiosos y llamativos, con manchas como una banana.

I definitely recommend visiting the Cíes Islands 100%, you'll have a great time. Breathe in the fresh, clean air, go trekking, swim, enjoy the beautiful views... it's really beautiful, with beaches and blue waters. In the last photo, you can see the other islands that make up the Cíes in the background, but on my other side I could see Vigo, where we started our trip. It's beautiful and you have an incredible time. I love it!

Ciertamente recomiendo al 100% visitar las Illas Cíes, se la pasa genial. Respirar aire puro y fresco, hacer trekking, bañarse, vistas preciosas... muy muy hermosas, playas con aguas celestes. Ahí donde ven la última foto, al fondo se ven las otras islas que constituyen las Cíes, pero a mi otro lado veía directamente a Vigo, el lugar desde donde partimos para realizar el viaje. Es precioso y se la pasa increíble ¡Me encanta!
