Trip to Terracina, the Emilian Forum, and the Town Hall Square/ Excursión a Terracina, al Foro Emiliano y a la Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

In the meantime, I'm cleaning out my laptop, where I found some old photos from a trip to Terracina that I'm happy to share with you! I remember going there with an ex-boyfriend, whose photos I've obviously deleted. It was a wonderful trip, and we visited many places. Today, I'll take you to some of them! Terracina is a city in Latina, rich in historical, architectural, and natural beauty. I remember there was a lot to see, but I'll tell you a little about the places we saw. In addition to the beautiful historic streets, almost all built of stone, Terracina has various archaeological remains and finds.

Mientras tanto, estoy limpiando mi portátil, donde encontré algunas fotos antiguas de un viaje a Terracina que me alegra compartir con ustedes. Recuerdo haber ido allí con un exnovio, cuyas fotos, obviamente, he borrado. Fue un viaje maravilloso y visitamos muchos lugares. ¡Hoy les mostraré algunos! Terracina es una ciudad de Latina, rica en belleza histórica, arquitectónica y natural. Recuerdo que había mucho que ver, pero les contaré un poco sobre los lugares que visitamos. Además de las hermosas calles históricas, casi todas construidas de piedra, Terracina cuenta con varios restos y hallazgos arqueológicos.

Here we are in Terracina Alta, where the ancient Emilian forum once stood. The Roman forums, as you know, were important meeting places for the citizens. Terracina was a maritime colony with many remains dating back to the Roman epics; it was also crossed by the Appian Way. In these photos, we can see some of the remains, such as those of the Capitoline Temple dedicated to Jupiter, dating back to the first century BC, and also the remains of the larger temple, such as the wall with the Latin inscription.

Here we also find the quadrifrontal honorary arch, also part of the Appian Way and built in the same period as the temples, a magnificent, well-preserved archaeological remains. This arch was one of the entrance arches to the Emilian Forum, which today has become the town hall square.

Nos encontramos en Terracina Alta, donde antiguamente se alzaba el antiguo foro emiliano. Como saben, los foros romanos eran importantes lugares de encuentro para los ciudadanos. Terracina fue una colonia marítima con numerosos vestigios que se remontan a la epopeya romana; además, estaba atravesada por la Vía Apia. En estas fotos, podemos ver algunos restos, como los del Templo Capitolino dedicado a Júpiter, que data del siglo I a. C., y también los restos del templo mayor, como el muro con la inscripción en latín.

Then we come to the Town Hall Square, or the ancient Emilian Forum. Here stands the Cathedral of San Cesareo, an imposing and beautiful structure that gives this square its character. It has undergone several renovations and still features some original marble tiles from the Appian Way. This cathedral was built on the ruins of a Roman temple and is today one of the city's main places of worship. This church's mixed style—Romanesque, Baroque, and Byzantine—is a true architectural gem. In the square, we also find an imposing medieval tower called the Torre Frumentaria, the tallest in the city, rising about thirty meters.

Terracina was bombed several times during World War II, but fortunately this square was spared the damage that occurred to the lower part of the city and the port. The bombing, however, did uncover many archaeological excavations, such as those on the north side of the square and those on the Capitoline Hill. Terracina indeed boasts many open-air Roman archaeological finds, making it a unique city for those who love Roman history and archaeology, about which I was little informed at the time. If I were to return today, I would probably be much more enthusiastic and intrigued. From Terracina Alta, I also remember a splendid view of Circeo, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Gulf of Terracina, and then the streets—what streets! Truly Italian, beloved by locals and tourists alike! Luego llegamos a la Plaza del Ayuntamiento, o el antiguo Foro Emiliano. Aquí se alza la Catedral de San Cesareo, una imponente y hermosa estructura que le da carácter a esta plaza. Ha sido objeto de varias renovaciones y aún conserva algunos azulejos de mármol originales de la Vía Apia. Esta catedral se construyó sobre las ruinas de un templo romano y hoy es uno de los principales lugares de culto de la ciudad. El estilo mixto de esta iglesia —románico, barroco y bizantino— es una verdadera joya arquitectónica. En la plaza, también encontramos una imponente torre medieval llamada Torre Frumentaria, la más alta de la ciudad, de unos treinta metros de altura.

Terracina fue bombardeada varias veces durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero afortunadamente esta plaza se salvó de los daños sufridos por la parte baja de la ciudad y el puerto. Sin embargo, el bombardeo dejó al descubierto numerosas excavaciones arqueológicas, como las del lado norte de la plaza y las del Capitolio.
