Here I am again, sharing my trip to Terracina, a land rich in beauty of every kind, located in the Pontine Marshes and surrounded by Mount Circeo and the Tyrrhenian Sea. A city rich in art, history, and nature. At the end of the post, I'll leave you with the first post I wrote about this beautiful, magical city. Meanwhile, I'll tell you about one of its symbols, the Terracina Cathedral, or more appropriately, the Cathedral of San Cesareo, named after a Roman citizen descended from the gens Julia. This cathedral is located in one of the main squares, the Piazza del Municipio, which in ancient times was the Emilian Forum, the city's main hub, a meeting place and gathering place for Roman citizens.

Terracina Cathedral was built in the fifth century on a Romanesque temple, and the cathedral itself also has a Romanesque feel. It has undergone numerous restorations, including a major one in the 18th century and one of the last in the early 20th century, which focused mostly on the external façade.

The cathedral is built atop an imposing staircase, with marble decorations and animal sculptures on the façade. The cathedral also has a bell tower, built later, which is said to have been built by the same person who also built the Gaeta Cathedral and other cathedrals near Latina. The cathedral inside is truly a masterpiece, beautiful and rich in art and sculpture! The cathedral has three naves divided by elegant columns with a marble altar at the end. It has a sacred and elegant atmosphere, with some Byzantine influences in the ceilings and floors. In the cathedral, relics of various saints, much loved by the city, are placed under some shrines. Inside, this cathedral also features a beautiful classical pulpit, some medieval columns and sculptures, a large organ, and various frescoes depicting scenes from Pope Urban II. The frescoes are incredible, as is the entire interior of the church. It's a true gem not to be missed if you love art and religious architecture, a simple yet beautiful interior.

I love visiting churches and cathedrals, and even back in my memory, I was pleasantly struck by this cathedral. I'm fortunate because Italy has so many magnificent cathedrals and churches, filled with treasures! This cathedral was obviously the center of Catholic activity in previous centuries, and I believe it's still appreciated today by believers and tourists alike. La catedral está construida sobre una imponente escalera, con decoraciones de mármol y esculturas de animales en la fachada. También cuenta con un campanario, de construcción posterior, que se dice fue obra del mismo autor de la Catedral de Gaeta y otras catedrales cerca de Latina. El interior de la catedral es una auténtica obra maestra, hermosa y rica en arte y escultura. La catedral tiene tres naves divididas por elegantes columnas con un altar de mármol al final. Posee un ambiente sagrado y elegante, con influencias bizantinas en los techos y suelos. En la catedral, las reliquias de varios santos, muy queridos por la ciudad, se encuentran bajo algunos santuarios. En su interior, esta catedral también cuenta con un hermoso púlpito clásico, algunas columnas y esculturas medievales, un gran órgano y varios frescos que representan escenas del Papa Urbano II. Los frescos son increíbles, al igual que todo el interior de la iglesia. Es una verdadera joya que no debe perderse si le gusta el arte y la arquitectura religiosa, con un interior sencillo pero hermoso.

Me encanta visitar iglesias y catedrales, e incluso en mis recuerdos, esta catedral me impresionó gratamente. ¡Tengo suerte de que Italia tenga tantas catedrales e iglesias magníficas, llenas de tesoros! Esta catedral fue, sin duda, el centro de la actividad católica en siglos pasados, y creo que aún hoy es apreciada tanto por creyentes como por turistas.
