The early October festival and the Church of San Michele./El festival de principios de octubre y la iglesia de San Michele.

Good evening, blog friends—how are you? This weekend, we went to a festival in the village of Tobbiana called the "Early October Festival" (Festa di inizio Ottobre), held annually to welcome the new month. For the occasion, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and its chapel are opened to the public, and we also had the chance to visit an exhibition by Geniale Ruffa hosted in the chapel hall. It is a small festival organized by the parish; for the event, the alleys and houses are decorated with the village coat of arms, and various banners line the streets leading to the church. I have mentioned Tobbiana before; it is a charming place by day, but also at night, when—from the top of the main square, looking out over the rooftops—you can see the entire illuminated valley of Pistoia and Montale. It is a beautiful view. We strolled up to the church, happy to finally be able to visit it. In the church courtyard, there were stalls set up with food, games, and the traditional charity raffle—a game where you draw a numbered cap to win small prizes, a common feature of parish festivals.

Now, let’s talk about the church; in front of it stands a war memorial—a reminder not to forget the horrors of war and the many young men who fell victim to the Germans. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo stands prominently at the top of the village square, accessible via a short flight of steps. Although the church dates back to the 13th century, it was renovated around the 18th century; the altars, with their stunning Carrara marble, also date from that era. Originally under the jurisdiction of Montale, the church is dedicated to Saint Michael—a figure deeply revered in the surrounding villages—and comprises both a main sanctuary and a smaller, yet equally beautiful, chapel. The smaller chapel is simpler but no less lovely, featuring an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary, paintings of the saint, modest pews, and a ceiling with Baroque-style decoration that avoids excess. It also hosted an exhibition by Ruffa, an artist from Pistoia renowned for his delicate, white sculptures—ethereal, fascinating works that were perfectly suited to the church setting.

In the larger church, however, the Baroque style is much more evident; it is richer in frescoes depicting saints and biblical scenes—beautiful artworks with small prayer altars beneath them. The main altar is more elaborate, surrounded by stunning candelabra, paintings, statues, and rich, exquisite decorations. The ceiling is also magnificent, featuring a large, rounded fresco that presides over the main altar. There are also statues surrounded by abundant floral arrangements; it is a beautiful church to visit, and looking out from the doorway offers a view of the entire valley. I was delighted to take part in this simple village festival and to have the chance to visit the beautiful church of Tobbiana. That’s all for now, blog friends—see you soon with more spots from my beautiful Tuscany!
