One of these is the Church of San Paolo, one of Pistoia's many two-tone churches, but not among the best-known like San Giovanni, San Francesco, or the Duomo. San Paolo is located on a street slightly further from the center, but it too is one of the city's zebra-striped churches, being partly made of stone and partly of two-tone black and white Carrara marble. It's an ancient church, but still very popular and beloved. In addition to the church, next to it is a small chapel dedicated to the nuns of the area as a place of prayer. The church is very large and beautiful, dating back to the thirteenth century and was built in the Tuscan Gothic style, very popular at the time. The large nave and the interior are more bare and simple than the façade and the exterior, which are much more elaborate with frescoes and sculptures. It has undergone various renovations over the centuries until it achieved the structure it has today.

The main door features sculptures dedicated to Moses, while inside, as the name suggests, most of the frescoes (some from the 17th or 18th century) are dedicated to St. Paul, the saint to whom the church is dedicated, and others to St. Mary. The church was once famous for perpetual adoration, when faithful, nuns, and priests would alternate day and night to pray continuously in the adjacent chapel. Today, I honestly don't know if this practice still exists. However, I really like the church, even though the simple interior has a somewhat gloomy feel, while the exterior is truly magnificent. I know that in the past, there were rumors that exorcisms were even performed in this church, but I don't know if the rumors are true. However, wandering near the church, I also came across the morgue. Okay, it's not very cheerful, but it's also historic, dating back to the late 19th century, with sculptures and a sign dedicated to mercy at the entrance. It's still active, so I don't think you can go inside and visit it, but I'm sure the interior also holds some historical treasures. Now I say goodbye to you blog friends until the next time!
