The picturesque town of Barquisimento.

Warm greetings to all my travellers from all over the world – it is a pleasure for me to greet you on this Wednesday, halfway through the week.

I recently visited the central-western part of Venezuela – as the state of Lara is often known – and, specifically, I explored the whole of Barquisimeto. I was captivated by its myriad colours; this city is quite picturesque, with many colourful spots brimming with rich culture and tradition, as well as the infrastructure of its countless squares, all of which are excellently maintained. Each of these places made me fall completely in love with this beautiful city. It all began right at the Jacinto Lara toll booth, which welcomed me to this lovely state – this is actually the third time I’ve visited it, but only my second time in Barquisimeto, a city often referred to in our country as the ‘musical city of Venezuela’.

What struck me when I visited this city is that there is a great deal of street art, but of a very high standard, where picturesque murals take centre stage; it is not simply vandalism involving scribbling on walls, but rather the creation of artistic and professional works in every corner of this beautiful city of Barquisimeto. I came across a mural that served as a tribute to the city on the occasion of its 474th anniversary, situated on Carrera 15, one of the city’s iconic main avenues.

I saw a beautiful square with some monuments, known as Plaza de los Abuelos, situated right on the main avenue, Avenida Libertador, in the Patarata housing estate. These are a series of picturesque sculptures of various elderly people, intended to pay tribute to them all. It caught my attention that, near this spot, they are building a sculpture of Tsunami, the little dog who saved so many people in the recent earthquake in ‘La Guaira’. I would have loved to photograph this lovely sculpture, but it wasn’t finished yet.

It really caught my attention that, right at a roundabout and a main avenue, I spotted a large monument that reminded me of the colourful floor at Maiquetía International Airport; however, this one is called the Monument to the Rising Sun, created by the renowned artist and master of kinetic art, Carlos Cruz. It is situated at the Redoma del Este roundabout, at the junction with the ‘Los Leones’ road, and is truly beautiful and impressive.

I’ve really enjoyed getting off the bus and exploring each of these places, but I’m actually taking these photos whilst sitting on the bus I was travelling in, as we made our way to the outskirts of Barquisimento, on our way to the town of Santa Rosa – a beautiful place known for its culture, its religious devotion and its boundless love for the Divina Pastora. Along most of the roads in Barquisimento, you’ll also find many stunning murals depicting devotion to the beautiful Virgencita de la Pastora.
