Saint Lucia: Where colour made itself at home. | Santa Lucía: Donde el color se hizo casa.

Saludos queridos tengan todos mis amigos viajeros en este Martes, he estado caminando por las calles de mi hermosa ciudad de Maracaibo para llenarme de ella de su historia y cultura.

Greetings, dear friends and fellow travellers, on this Tuesday. I have been walking through the streets of my beautiful city of Maracaibo to immerse myself in its history and culture.

El barrio de Santa Lucía ubicado en la ciudad de Maracaibo, el cual posee su nombre cómo el empedrado proviene de sus calles en piedras que esta forman vida dentro de este lugar es por eso que es conocido por este nombre con esa referencia, ya que muchas de las calles que constituyen a este barrio. Están fabricadas en piedra, este es uno de los barrios más antiguos de la ciudad de Maracaibo y más ilustres, puesto que en él no solamente alberga la historia, sino también la cultura qué nace en cada una de sus paredes, casas pintorescas y calles siempre que voy para este barrio, cada vez que voy a este barrio, me gusta fotografiarlo ya que mis ojos lo ven como toda una obra artística.

The Santa Lucía neighbourhood is located in the city of Maracaibo. It gets its name from its cobbled streets, which are made of stones that form part of life in this place. That is why it is known by this name, as many of the streets that make up this neighbourhood are cobbled. This is one of the oldest and most illustrious neighbourhoods in the city of Maracaibo, as it not only houses history, but also the culture that is born in each of its walls, picturesque houses and streets. Whenever I go to this neighbourhood, I like to photograph it because my eyes see it as a work of art.

Este barrio fue construido en el siglo XVI justamente desde la fundación de Maracaibo, desde entonces se construyerón su carreteras de piedras este barrio posee la cuarta iglesia más antigua de la ciudad de estilo neoclásico, posee lugares emblemáticos de referencia como lo es la famosa "Esquina de Santa Lucia", que tiene muchos años y es un lugar que todo Marabino conoce porque tiene una gaita en especial no solo por todos todos los Marabinos, por los Zulianos y Venezolanos, apesar que muchas de estas casas se encuentren en estado de abandono no dejan de ser bastante hermosas y fascinantes.

This neighbourhood was built in the 16th century, right after the founding of Maracaibo. Since then, its stone roads have been built. This neighbourhood has the fourth oldest church in the city, built in the neoclassical style, and has emblematic landmarks such as the famous "Esquina de Santa Lucia", which is many years old and is a place that everyone in Maracaibo knows because it has a special gaita not only for all the people of Maracaibo, but also for the people of Zulia and Venezuela. Although many of these houses are in a state of disrepair, they are still quite beautiful and fascinating.

Ahora ven a lo largo de todas las pintorescas casitas de Santa Lucía que esta mayormente tienen sus techos en elaborados en madera qué son bastante altos, sus casas estrechas la razón de por qué estos son así, es porque permiten el paso de la ventilación para que se puedan distribuir a lo largo de todas las casas ya que son casas de estilo colonial, este era el fin que tenía estos techo permitir el mayor paso del viento para poder refrescar las cada una de las casas, en estas pequeñas casas podemos encontrar algunas leyendas o carteles que hacen referencia de lugares emblemáticos de Santa Lucía, así como agrupaciones gaiteras y personas emblemáticas que hicieron vida en esta localidad así como también en otras partes de Maracaibo.

Now, take a look at all the picturesque little houses in Santa Lucía, most of which have high, elaborate wooden roofs. The reason why these houses are narrow is because they allow ventilation to flow through them, as they are colonial-style houses. The purpose of these roofs was to allow the wind to pass through and cool each of the houses. In these small houses, we can find some legends or posters that refer to emblematic places in Santa Lucía, as well as bagpipe groups and emblematic people who lived in this town and other parts of Maracaibo.

Ahora bien, la gaita es totalmente zuliana, porque esta es una música original de nuestra localidad, pero es aquí en Santa Lucía fue donde nace por primera vez la gaita, ya que las personas que vivían en este barrio le gustaba hacer música con lo que tenían en sus casas, agarraban a maderas, las golpeaban, palos de escoba entre otros y esto sirvió de inspiración para la fabricación de estos instrumentos musicales, como también expresar sus quejas y transformarlas en música, ya que la gaita es una protesta que expresa una necesidad, este es su origén desde entonces se impulsó la música gaitera que es de gran referencia para los venezolanos, ya que todas las hemos escucha en Navidad, pero los Zulianos la escuchamos en cualquier época del año.

Now, the gaita is totally Zulian, because this is original music from our locality, but it was here in Santa Lucía where the gaita was first born, since the people who lived in this neighbourhood liked to make music with whatever they had in their homes. They would grab pieces of wood, and beat them, broomsticks, among other things, and this served as inspiration for the manufacture of these musical instruments, as well as expressing their complaints and transforming them into music, since the gaita is a protest that expresses a need. This is its origin, and since then, gaita music has been promoted, which is a great reference for Venezuelans, since we have all heard it at Christmas, but we Zulianos listen to it at any time of the year.

Por último fue un grato paseo visitar el antigup barrio de Santa Lucia el cual posee mas de 400 años sin duda alguna, la cultura marabina es tan rica llena de tanta tradición que sin duda alguna no debemos olvidarla jamás, muchas gracias amigos por conocer conmigo el "Empedrado de Santa Lucia", espero les haya gustado este grato paseo nos vemos en una próxima oportunidad.

Finally, it was a pleasant walk to visit the old neighbourhood of Santa Lucia, which is undoubtedly more than 400 years old.
