Cacique Nigale Park and its.

Warm greetings to my travellers all over the world on this Sunday.

During my visit to Santa Rosa de Agua, a place steeped in history where Amerigo Vespucci was inspired to give Venezuela its name due to its striking resemblance to Venice – having observed this great similarity, he decided to name our country accordingly – Just before we delve into all the beauty this place has to offer—situated on the outskirts of Maracaibo—we come across a park named after Cacique Nigale, a brilliant indigenous leader who played a very important role in the indigenous resistance and who must not be forgotten.

We can find this space, which offers a degree of shade, where you can peacefully feel the breeze brushing against your face, amongst small shrubs, plants, palm trees and benches, amongst other features. This space serves as the heart and cornerstone of tourism and history, as its primary aim is to pay tribute to an indigenous man who gave and defended everything for our nation.

Delving a little deeper into history, this square was previously named after Amerigo Vespucci, but it is worth noting that although this European man drew inspiration from ‘Little Venice’ for the name ‘Venezuela’, he was not a native of this place, as he was a conquistador; Instead, it was decided to rename this square because the indigenous chieftain Nigale was indeed from our country and, moreover, a native of Zulia. The square is quite picturesque, a riot of colour; despite the high temperatures, a breeze always blows, creating a magical contrast with the sound of the water, as the park is surrounded by it.

Now, let us describe each of the park’s features: right in the centre stands a bronze statue of Chief Nigale, who is depicted holding a spear in his arms; he also has a small bag on his back in which he carries these spears. He stands high upon a vertical plinth, on which there is a brief account of this great chieftain’s life. We must not forget that the chieftain was born on the small island of Zapara, which now forms part of the municipality of Almirante Padilla.

Finally, the park is very well maintained despite the high temperatures, which makes it a distinctly tourist-friendly spot and a flagship for our city of Maracaibo. It’s wonderful that it’s in such good condition; I invite you all to visit Santa Rosa de Agua and explore this site, as well as to learn more about Nigale’s life and all that she achieved. It has been a pleasure for me to share this place with you and to tell you a little more about its history.

it is really interesting how the square was renamed to honor Cacique Nigale instead of keeping the European explorer's name, especially since he was a local figure from Zulia
