Good evening, travelers. How’s your weekend going? Mine’s going great right now I’m taking a break from my workweek, thinking about how I need a new adventure. For now, I’ll continue my journey through the state of Mérida.
It was around 10 in the morning when we left the charming town of Chachopo behind to continue our route through the páramo, specifically to Pico del Águila. But first, we passed through places like La Venta; the mountains were the stars of every climb and curve. For this trip, we were prepared with appropriate clothing for the cold.
For a moment, traffic began to slow down, which is very rare in mountainous areas. We thought something had happened, but further down the road, they were performing the Stations of the Cross. During Holy Week, it’s common to see reenactments of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the small Andean villages.
We continued climbing steep roads, and the cold began to feel more intense; we had to stop to put on gloves. The sun was setting, and the fog dominated the landscape. We passed by the side of Laguna del Guache without getting a good view of this freshwater spring. At this point, we were very close to reaching Pico de Águila after an hour and a half on the road.
Finally, after many curves, we arrived at what felt to me like being very close to heaven. Unlike other times, the altitude didn’t affect me as much and didn’t give me a headache. We got off the motorcycle and went immediately to the Chapel of the Virgin of Coromoto. I felt so good that I decided to climb up to where it was located; it was my first time walking to this spot, and the mist passing near the peak looked incredible.
We went down and headed to the Águila monument; there were many tourists taking pictures what a joy to see so many people enjoying the beauty of our country. From here, we could see the Chapel of the Virgin of Coromoto at the top of the mountain.
This is the highest point on the Trans-Andean Highway, and what a joy it was to be here again with Ricardo, who hadn’t known about this tourist attraction in magical Mérida.

Buenas noches viajeros. ¿Que tal va su fin de semana? El mío muy bien, en este momento me encuentro descasando de mi semana de trabajo, pensando en que necesito una nueva aventura, por lo pronto seguiré con mi viaje por el estado Mérida.
Eran aproximadamente las 10 de las mañana cuando dejamos el llamativo pueblo de Chachopo atrás, para continuar con nuestra ruta del páramo, específicamente al Pico del Águila, pero antes pasamos algunos sitios como La Venta, las montañas eran las protagonistas en cada subida o curva, para este viaje íbamos preparados con ropa adecuada para el frío.
Por un momento el tráfico empezó a ponerse lento lo que es muy raro en zonas montañosas, pensábamos que había pasado algo pero más adelante en la carretera estaban haciendo el Vía Crucis, en Semana Santa es común ver dramatizando la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo en los pueblitos andinos.
Continuamos subiendo por carreteras empinadas y el frío se empezó a sentir más templado tuvimos que parar para ponernos guantes, el sol se estaba ocultando y las neblina era la protagonista de los paisajes, pasamos al costado de la Laguna del Guache sin lograr una buena vista de esta naciente de agua dulce, en este punto estábamos muy cerca de llegar al Pico de Águila luego de una hora y treinta minutos en la carretera.
Finalmente luego de muchas curvas llegamos a lo que para mi es como estar muy cerca del cielo, a diferencia de otras veces la altura no me afecto tanto y no me provocó dolor de cabeza, bajamos de la moto y fuimos inmediatamente hasta la Capilla de la Virgen de Coromoto, me sentía tan bien que decidí subir hasta donde se encontraba, era mi primera vez caminando hasta este punto y que increíble se veía la neblina pasando cerca del pico.
Bajamos y fuimos hasta donde esta el monumento del Águila, habían muchos turistas tomando fotografías que alegría poder ver a tantas personas disfrutando de la belleza de nuestro país, desde aquí podíamos ver a la Capilla de la Virgen de Coromoto en la cima de la montaña.
Este es el punto más alto de la Carretera Transandina y que alegría poder estar aquí nuevamente en compañía de Ricardo, que no conocía este sitio de interés turístico de la mágica Mérida.
