Not everything turns out the way we expect; the Mukumbari Cable Car seems out of reach | No todo resulta como esperamos, el Teleférico Mukumbari parece inalcanzable ⛰️

ENGLISH VERSION (click here!)

Good evening, travelers from around the world.

It was our third day of travel, and we were still in the city of Mérida. It was Holy Saturday, and our plan for the day was to visit the Mukumbari Cable Car, so we got up as early as we could. The main goal of the trip was to reach Pico Espejo and experience that breathtaking view.

We walked several blocks to get there, and it wasn’t a problem because the weather was cold. Beforehand, we stopped to buy breakfast at a stand selling empanadas and pastries that we found near the cable car. Being true Zulianos, we picked up some pastries so we could have breakfast at one of the stations—that’s what we’d been craving up until that point.

The excitement grew as we approached the cable car, since it was a dream for both of us. When we arrived at the nearby ticket booths to buy tickets, we found out that there were no tickets left for that day (it was 7:00 a.m.). It was a hard blow for us to learn that we couldn’t share the experience together. For me, it was my second time going, but for Ricardo, it was his first, and it was frustrating not to be able to accomplish one of the main goals of the trip basically, it was the most important thing he wanted to do in Mérida.

We decided to put the disappointment aside, so while we were having breakfast at the Plaza de las Heroínas, we started thinking about the good things and how, even though we couldn’t go up, the rest of the trip had met our expectations; now all that was left was to keep enjoying other beautiful places in Mérida.

As we walked through this magical city, gazing at the imposing Andean mountains and sipping frothy coffee, we came upon a billboard listing various places we could visit. We decided our next destination would be the Enchanted Forest, but to get there, we had to return to the hotel to pick up the motorcycle and bid farewell to the city to set off on a new adventure that I’ll soon be sharing with you.

For now, I’ll sign off by saying that not all travel experiences are the same, but one thing I learned the hard way is: Don’t travel to Mérida during Holy Week, since tickets sell out early because they’re reserved by travel agencies and foreigners. We don’t know exactly how they operate since they don’t have a website, but the silver lining is that there’s a reason to return to Mérida at other times of the year.
