A Paradise in the Andes: Timotes | El paraíso de los Andes: Timotes ⛰️

Good morning, travelers.
After spending almost all of Holy Thursday traveling through parts of Trujillo state, we headed to Mérida state to wrap up that amazing day. I couldn’t take any photos along the way because I was charging my phone, but I must tell you that our route took us through the entire city of Valera, up the Quebrada de Cuevas, and along the Transandina Highway until we reached Timotes, the first small town we came across upon arriving in Mérida. Along the way, the rain set in, bringing cooler weather than is typical for that area.
Timotes is a beautiful little town that’s over 400 years old. It’s known for its breathtaking mountain scenery. I hadn’t been there since I was in college about 12 years ago, so I was really excited to return. Our first stop was at Doctor José Gregorio Hernández Park, a beautiful gift from the Briceño family to beautify the area at the entrance to Timotes.
The second stop was at the Minor Basilica of Saint Lucy, which features imposing and charming architecture in a Neo-Gothic style, highlighted by its bell tower and a small statue of Saint Lucy. I was able to see a little of the interior, but not enough because there were many people attending the Holy Thursday Mass; if I recall correctly, it is on this day during Holy Week that the Washing of the Feet takes place.
The third and final stop was at Plaza Bolívar. I usually visit these places wherever I go, but this one has a special and unique significance since Simón Bolívar passed through Timotes during his campaign to liberate part of the western region of the country.
That day, I could only take photos of the Bolívar statue from a distance, since the area was off-limits and cordoned off with a security barrier, so, like good citizens, we stayed in the surrounding area enjoying the tall trees and the moss hanging from them, which adds a touch of magic to the place. We saw a small playground and some little birds playing near it what a joy it is for me when I spot a bird along the way.
And so ended our first day of travel, full of memories and great stories to cherish forever.

Luego de pasar casi todo el Jueves Santo viajando por algunos sitios del estado Trujillo, nos fuimos hasta el estado Mérida para culminar ese grandioso día, no pude tomar fotos del camino, porque estaba cargando mi teléfono, pero debo decirles que nuestra ruta fue atravesando toda la ciudad de Valera, subiendo por la Quebrada de Cuevas y siguiendo por la carretera Transandina hasta llegar a Timotes el primer pueblito que nos encontramos al llegar a Mérida, en el camino la lluvia se hizo presente, para regalarnos un clima más frío que el que se acostumbra en esa zona.
Timotes, es un hermoso pueblito que tiene más de 400 años, destaca por sus hermosos paisajes montañosos que dejan sin aliento, no venía desde que estaba en la universidad hace aproximadamente 12 años, así que estaba muy emocionada de volver, la primera parada fue en el Parque Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, un hermoso donativo por parte de la familia Briceño para embellecer un espacio en la entrada a Timotes.
La segunda parada fue en la Basílica Menor Santa Lucía, la cuál posee una arquitectura imponente y encantadora, con un estilo neogótico donde destaca su campanario y una pequeña imagen de Santa Lucía, pude conocer un poco su interior pero no lo suficiente porque habían muchas personas que estaban en la eucaristía del Jueves Santo, donde sino más recuerdo es el día de la Semana Mayor en el cuál se realiza el Lavatorio de Pies.
La tercera y última parada fue en la Plaza Bolívar, a cada sitio que voy acostumbro a visitarlas, pero aquí tiene un significado especial y distinto ya que Simón Bolívar paso por Timotes en su campaña para liberar parte del occidente del país.
Este día solo pude tomar fotos desde lejos de la estatua de Bolívar, ya que no se podía acceder a esa área y tenía un cordón de seguridad, así que como buenos ciudadanos nos quedamos en los alrededores disfrutando de los altos árboles y los musgos guindando de ellos, que le da un toque de magia al lugar, vimos un pequeño parque de juegos y unos pajaritos jugando cerca del mismo, que alegría para mi cuando encuentro alguna ave en el camino.
Así culminó nuestro primer día de viaje, lleno de recuerdos y buenas historias para la posteridad.
