The Spanish city of Teruel is called the romantic capital of the country. There are two towers in the city, the construction of which is associated with a tragic love story. There are several towers in the city, built in the Mudejar style. They are the hallmark of the city and are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. These structures are a unique fusion of Islamic architectural tradition and Christian content.
You see, there are these two really famous towers, San Martin and San Salvador, and they look almost identical, which is pretty interesting. The story behind them is that there were these two Muslim craftsmen, Omar and Abdullah, who both fell for the same girl, Soraya. So, to figure out who would get to marry her, her dad came up with this idea: he told each of the guys to build a tower, and whoever did the better job would get to be Soraya's husband. It's a pretty cool legend, and it explains why the towers look so similar. Apparently, the two craftsmen were trying to outdo each other, and that's how we ended up with these two amazing towers that are still standing today.
The story goes that the towers were built to show off their skills, and the one who built the better tower would win Soraya's hand in marriage. It's a romantic story, and it's still told today as the reason why the towers of San Martin and San Salvador are so similar. The craftsmen had been working behind closed doors, or rather, large canvases, keeping their project a secret from the rest of the world. But when the time finally came to reveal their creations, it was clear that both towers were breathtakingly beautiful. However, upon closer inspection, it was noticed that Omar's tower, the one in San Martin, had a slight tilt to it - barely perceptible, but a flaw nonetheless. Omar was devastated by his mistake, and the fact that he had lost to his competitor. In a moment of utter despair, he made a tragic decision, throwing himself from the top of his own tower, a drastic and heartbreaking end to a life that had been dedicated to his craft. We were looking at these towers when my son Arian spotted something that was easy to miss - they were tilted, just a little bit. He pointed it out to his sister Erika, and she was surprised she hadn't noticed it herself.
-Yeah, it's a bit off, she said with a smile.
The towers of the two rivals are similar in style, but each has its own unique fate in the history of the city. It is known that they performed not only a religious role as bell towers, but also a defensive and symbolic function. These towers have a really cool design feature - they're made with brick and beautiful ceramics.
The outside walls are decorated with complicated patterns, like rhombuses and arches that twist together. And the green and white tiles that are used give off a nice shine, which makes the big buildings look lighter and more elegant. The way the light hits them is pretty amazing, it's like they're glowing from the inside out. The combination of all these things - the brick, the ceramics, the patterns, and the tiles - creates a really unique and beautiful look that sets these towers apart.
The towers of San Salvador and San Martin are pretty cool too, they've got these archways that run underneath them, which is a great idea because it means the towers can be right in the middle of the city without getting in the way of the streets.
