Toledo is the ancient capital of Spain, and honestly, you’ll rarely see this many sights per square meter anywhere else. It’s packed with a palace, a castle, towers, bridges, ancient walls, and countless religious sites: Christian, Muslim, and Jewish ones. It’s no wonder they call it the city of three cultures. It really feels like Toledo is frozen in time. Even in the regular souvenir shops in town, you can buy knight armor, swords, and crossbows alongside the usual magnets. Walking around, you genuinely feel like you’ve been transported straight back to the Middle Ages.
Until 1561, Toledo was the capital of Spain, and in my opinion, it’s still way cooler than Madrid when it comes to historical landmarks. It’s one of the few cities in Europe where medieval architecture has stayed so remarkably well-preserved.
We were especially blown away by the Alcázar. It started as a Roman palace, turned into a Muslim fortress, and survived several fires and wartime destruction. Today, it houses the Army Museum, and our boys were completely obsessed with it. It has everything you could imagine: weapons and uniforms ranging from the Middle Ages to modern times, including swords, crossbows, pistols, rifles, and cannons. There are also tons of scale models of fortresses and fortifications, which Arian absolutely loved looking at.

Erika, on the other hand, was totally amazed by the massive collection of battle scenes set up with toy tin soldiers. There was infantry, cavalry, and even soldiers riding elephants and camels. She especially fell in love with a carriage.

“It looks just like Cinderella’s!” she said.

After that, we headed to the Santa Cruz Museum, which used to be a monastery. I particularly loved the porcelain exhibit. The jugs, plates, and vases—some of them over 400 years old! Erika and I kept running from plate to jug, just admiring the incredible craftsmanship of the people who made them.
On top of that, Toledo’s city walls are incredibly well-preserved. They used to stretch for 2.5 kilometers (just imagine that!), and most of them are still standing today.
The “chubby” towers of the Puerta del Sol—as Erika called them—are especially impressive. They form part of the city walls and were built in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller, serving not only as a defensive gateway but also as a grand ceremonial entrance to the inner city.
While we were there, my husband explained to the kids how the gate worked as a trap. If enemies managed to get inside, they’d find themselves trapped in a stone chamber, taking fire from archers above on all sides. Arian was completely blown away by that.

The city also features two bridges: the Alcántara Bridge, dating back to the 11th century, and the San Martín Bridge from the 14th century. Both are absolutely gorgeous.

Toledo is also home to many religious landmarks, the most prominent being the Cathedral. It’s a breathtaking building with a royal chapel, its famous golden monstrance, and magnificent paintings in the sacristy.

Throughout the city, you’ll find synagogues and mosques — some active, others converted into Christian churches—along with an entire Jewish quarter, the Judería. All of it serves as living proof that people from three different cultures can coexist peacefully.
