A journey from a bell tower to the heart of Camaguey [Eng/Esp]

There are moments in a mother's life when, rather than teaching, you learn to see the world through your daughter's amazed eyes, and you rediscover the magic of places that, because they are so familiar, you had forgotten to look at carefully. That was exactly what happened to me last Saturday, when I decided to fulfill my promise to teach my little girl to know and love the place where she was born, this endearing and labyrinthine city of Camaguey.

We set ourselves a goal that, I confess, caused me a certain amount of respect: climbing the Bell Tower of the Church of Our Lady of Mercy. This church stands defiantly over the urban landscape, and for as long as I can remember, I have heard the stories of this church, which has been devoured by flames on more than one occasion.

Upon arrival, the baroque facade greeted us with its imposing silence, and after crossing its wooden doors and coordinating with the guide, we began the ascent. The stairs are steep, made of stone, worn down by the passage of centuries and the footsteps of countless parishioners and visitors. Halfway up, I confess I felt a knot in my stomach, something akin to the ancestral fear that any Cuban woman feels when climbing an old building that has survived fires and attacks. My daughter, however, went ahead, with the energy and courage that only innocence can give. We decided that reaching that point was enough, and it turned out to be the perfect place, a privileged balcony that destiny had reserved for us.

That was when the magic happened, because from that intermediate height, Camaguey unfolded before us like a giant map of clay jars and rooftops. The sky that day was dressed in its finest, with a blue so deep it seemed to have come from a dream, and white cottony clouds that moved like flocks across the firmament. The view was simply extraordinary. Below, the bustling life of the city was reduced to a whisper, and our home, our province, was seen from a perspective known only to birds.

Our gazes inevitably focused on the Plaza de los Trabajadores, because from above, its design read like an open book. I could appreciate the symmetry of its gardens, the harmony of its colors, and the ebb and flow of people who, like diligent little ants, moved about freely. Around the square, the colonial buildings showed off their restored facades, with their characteristic eaves and wrought iron grilles, telling stories of eras of splendor and resistance.

Undoubtedly, the center of attention, the navel of that perfect postcard, was the imposing ceiba tree that stands in the middle of the square. From above, it looked like a huge, leafy green lady, embracing the ground with its roots and protecting passersby with its branches. I thought of how many generations of Camaguey locals must have played around it, how many love stories, gatherings, and silences that ceiba must have treasured.

My daughter and I were not just seeing the city; we were weaving a shared memory, like an invisible bond that would unite her forever to this piece of land that saw her born. In her enthusiasm, I saw reflected my own when I was a girl and my grandmother brought me to the church.

The experience was a balm for the soul, a reminder of the resilient beauty of our homeland. As we came down, I carried in my eyes the image of that majestic ceiba, the silhouette of the rooftops, and the infinite blue of the Camaguey sky, and in my heart, the certainty that my daughter was indeed learning to love this place, not because I told her so, but because she was feeling it. It was a truly magical day, one of those that life and Camaguey give you so that you never forget where you come from.
