Today, we continue with an account of the fun trip I took this Saturday—along with two friends—to one of the most beautiful, blue, and warm beaches in Sucre State: Playa El Castillo. Hoy continuamos con el relato del divertido viaje que realicé este sábado —junto a dos amigas— a una de las playas más hermosas, de aguas azules y cálidas, en el estado Sucre: Playa El Castillo. Playa El Castillo is characterized by having very few waves; while it is calm, the water can be deep. That day, the sea was serene, even though a few boats stirred its tranquil waters. Since it is an expansive beach and it is not currently the holiday season, you can swim in peace, away from the crowds found at other tourist beaches.

La playa El Castillo se caracteriza por tener muy poco oleaje; aunque es tranquila, puede ser profunda. Ese día, el mar estaba sereno, a pesar de que algunas embarcaciones agitaban sus aguas tranquilas. Al tratarse de una playa extensa y no ser temporada vacacional, es posible nadar con tranquilidad, lejos de las aglomeraciones que se encuentran en otras playas turísticas.

While there, we learned that many of the boats arriving and departing with passengers were chartered by tour agencies. There are numerous agencies that sell vacation packages for various tourist areas in the state of Sucre. One of the packages for Araya cost $27 and included lunch, boat transport, a beach canopy, and a welcome cocktail.

Estando allí, supimos que muchas de las embarcaciones que llegaban y partían con pasajeros estaban contratadas por agencias de turismo. Existen numerosas agencias que venden paquetes vacacionales para diversas zonas turísticas del estado Sucre. Uno de los paquetes para Araya costaba 27 dólares e incluía el almuerzo, el traslado en barco, un toldo de playa y un cóctel de bienvenida.

That day, there were more tourists than local residents in Araya, and very few vendors. We had gone with the intention of buying some of the local handicrafts—made from stone and clay—but the informal vendors were nowhere to be found. As I mentioned, that’s likely because it’s the off-season.

Ese día, en Araya había más turistas que residentes locales, y muy pocos vendedores. Habíamos ido con la intención de comprar algunas artesanías de la zona —hechas de piedra y arcilla—, pero no encontramos a ningún vendedor informal por ninguna parte. Como ya mencioné, es probable que se deba a que estamos en temporada baja.

This beach is perfect, as there are several inns nearby where you can stay if you plan on spending more time there. Since they are close by, you can stay at the beach until late and witness the sunsets, which are truly impressive.

Esta playa es perfecta, ya que hay varias posadas cerca donde puedes alojarte si planeas pasar más tiempo allí. Al estar tan cerca, puedes quedarte en la playa hasta tarde y contemplar las puestas de sol, que son realmente impresionantes.

But since we didn’t intend to stay—as we had to return to Cumaná that same day—we began gathering our things when we saw the boat go by. It was 1:00 p.m., and although the boat departs at 3:00 p.m., you need to arrive early to buy your tickets.

Pero como no teníamos intención de quedarnos —ya que debíamos regresar a Cumaná ese mismo día—, empezamos a recoger nuestras cosas al ver pasar la embarcación. Era la 1:00 p. m. y, aunque el barco sale a las 3:00 p. m., hay que llegar con antelación para comprar los boletos.

However, the beach held us back. The water was so delightful that we decided to stay a little longer. It’s not every day that we get to go to Araya—and with friends, at that. As the afternoon wears on, the colors of the sky and the sea begin to change: the sea takes on a silvery-gray hue, much like the surface of a mirror.

Sin embargo, la playa nos retuvo. El agua era tan agradable que decidimos quedarnos un poco más. No todos los días tenemos la oportunidad de ir a Araya, ¡y además en compañía de amigos! A medida que avanza la tarde, los colores del cielo y del mar empiezan a cambiar: el mar adquiere un tono gris plateado, muy parecido a la superficie de un espejo.

As we walked toward the Araya pier, where the maritime terminal was located, we saw the boat that was to take us to Cumaná pulling away; yet, we remained happy, simply because of the scenery that lay before us.

Mientras caminábamos hacia el muelle de Araya, donde se encontraba el terminal marítimo, vimos alejarse la embarcación que debía llevarnos a Cumaná; aun así, permanecimos felices, sencillamente por el paisaje que se extendía ante nosotros.

Unlike our outbound journey, the return trip was made on a type of vessel known as a "Tapaíto." These small, boat-like craft are equipped with a single engine and typically carry a large number of passengers. The fare was just over a dollar—payable in cash—and, as you can see in the photos, people simply squeeze in however they can.

A diferencia del trayecto de ida, el viaje de regreso se realizó en un tipo de embarcación conocida como "tapaíto". Estas pequeñas naves, similares a botes, están equipadas con un solo motor y, por lo general, transportan a un gran número de pasajeros. El pasaje costaba poco más de un dólar —a pagar en efectivo— y, como se puede apreciar en las fotos, la gente simplemente se acomoda como puede, apretujándose en el espacio disponible.

Despite the boat itself, the trip was perfect and enjoyable. The blue of the sea had faded, and now a dark gray filled everything. Although tired, we reached our destination happy and eager to take another trip together.
