Strolling along the highway Cumaná-Carúpano

image.png

Months ago, we decided to go buy a corner guard in Cerezal, a small town in Sucre state located on the Cumaná-Carúpano highway. This town is about an hour and a half from Cumaná, the city where I live, and its main attraction is the local handicrafts and sweets sold in shops lining both sides of the road.

Since we wanted to buy the corner guard before it rained and the vendors packed up their merchandise, we decided to leave early and made few stops. On the way there, we only stopped to take some photos and to buy some rope to secure the corner guard to the car.

If you're driving your own vehicle, you should pay attention to the minimal road signs, as you can easily miss one and get lost. Most of these signs are made by the local people themselves, using pieces of wood or even names written on stones.

When we arrived in Cerezal, we were unpleasantly surprised: only one store was open. We didn't know if it was because of the threat of rain or the country's economic situation. We asked the owner of the only business, and she said that people opened when they could, and that sales were slow. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the corner store, but we bought some wooden spoons.

Along this route, as there are many small rural villages, it is common to find animals such as chickens, cows, and goats in the middle of the road or in the gardens of houses; likewise, it is common to marvel at the seascape that amazes the eye with its different shades of blue.

Without the pressure of reaching Cerezal, the return trip was more enjoyable, and we could stop whenever we wanted. One of our first stops was in the town of San Antonio, which I've mentioned before. We stopped to refresh ourselves and the car.

Since we had all the time in the world, we decided to visit El Borbollón, also known as Los Chorritos, a hot springs area near the entrance to San Antonio.

El Borbollón is a natural, public place; there's no entrance fee, and that day it was packed with people. Since we'd never been, we decided to go in and see what the water was like. Sure enough, hot, sulfurous water springs up and it's incredibly relaxing. I would have loved to stay longer, but since the plan was to continue exploring other places and there were quite a few people around, we decided to leave. This is a place I plan to return to soon and write a full post about it.

After that, with the joy of salt clinging to our faces and hair, we began stopping at each of the beaches along the way. This road is lined with many beautiful, wild, and tranquil beaches, ranging in color from deep blue to emerald. Beaches like Quetepe, Cachamaure, Tocuchare, Maigualida, and Guaracayar are visited daily by locals and tourists alike.

But if there's one beach that truly stands out, it's Playa Bruja (Witch's Beach), not only for its tranquility but also for its stunning emerald-green color and because it's usually deserted. This beach is located in a long cove, so it has no waves and can resemble a lagoon or swimming pool.

Many legends and myths have sprung up around this beach, spreading and shrouding it in mystery. Perhaps that's why, despite its beauty, it's a beach where you'll never find swimmers and is supposedly used for rituals and highly mystical activities. Like El Borbollón, this place deserves its own dedicated post.

From there we continued to other beaches and at each one we stopped for a while and swam, we had plenty of time and that's what life is all about: getting to know and experience new places.

That afternoon we returned home. That day was different, without big plans and on a tight budget. We came back happy and satisfied, certain that there are places worth visiting not just once, but several times. And the Cumaná-Carúpano highway is full of natural gems well worth discovering.

Esa tarde regresamos a casa.

Hola mana lindas imágenes me recordaron viejos tiempos.

Saludos
