The state of Sucre is a state of Venezuela, located in front of the Caribbean Sea and its capital is Cumaná, a city where I live and from which we will depart to reach the Araya Peninsula, where the castle is located.

We left the house at 7 in the morning and since it is high season, there were already people in line to buy the boat ticket. The ticket price on the government boat is $2, but if you go on other boats and take a vehicle, you have to pay more. Oh, elderly people do not pay if they provide a photocopy of their ID card and children pay half the fare. Departure times will depend on the day. Since it was Saturday, the boat left Cumaná at 9 in the morning, at 1:00, 3:30, and 5:45 in the afternoon.

Salimos de la casa a las 7 de la mañana y como es temporada alta, ya había gente haciendo fila para comprar el boleto del bote. El precio del boleto en el bote del gobierno es de $2, pero si vas en otros botes y llevas un vehículo, tienes que pagar más. Ah, las personas mayores no pagan si presentan una fotocopia de su cédula de identidad y los niños pagan la mitad del pasaje. Los horarios de salida dependerán del día. Como era sábado, el bote salió de Cumaná a las 9 de la mañana, a la 1:00, 3:30 y 5:45 de la tarde.

We had to wait a while to be able to board, as they were cleaning the boat. Afterwards, they called people by first and last name. If you carry large bags or suitcases, they inspect them. We only brought a beach bag and a cooler, so we passed through easily. It should be noted that the boat has air conditioning and comfortable seats, so the trip was pleasant and fast: it lasted 40 minutes.

Tuvimos que esperar un rato para poder abordar, ya que estaban limpiando el barco. Después, llamaron a las personas por nombre y apellido. Si llevas bolsas grandes o maletas, las inspeccionan. Nosotros solo trajimos una bolsa de playa y una nevera portátil, así que pasamos fácilmente. Cabe señalar que el barco tiene aire acondicionado y asientos cómodos, por lo que el viaje fue agradable y rápido: duró 40 minutos.

Upon arriving in Araya, we will find a maritime terminal and different kiosks where they sell empanadas, also a small restaurant where you can eat and drink whatever you want. Since our destination was the castle, we took a taxi that charged us $1, but you can also go on foot, it is relatively close, and enjoy the scenery.

Al llegar a Araya, encontraremos una terminal marítima y diferentes kioscos donde venden empanadas, también un pequeño restaurante donde puedes comer y beber lo que quieras. Como nuestro destino era el castillo, tomamos un taxi que nos cobró $1, pero también puedes ir a pie, está relativamente cerca, y disfrutar del paisaje.

Upon arriving at the castle, we started taking photos like crazy. To enter, you don't have to pay anything and there are no conditions to enter.

The Araya Castle is the oldest fortification in Venezuela and although it has undergone repairs, it is now in ruins. Its construction dates back to 1623 and it was built by the Spanish to repel Dutch soldiers who wanted to control the salt flats. After it was built, in 1762, during the Anglo-Spanish war, it was partially destroyed.

Posteriormente, en 1762, durante la guerra anglo-española, fue parcialmente destruido.

As we walk among the ruins, we get an idea not only of what the original structure must have been like, but also of what it was built for, since from where it is located, one can have a broad view of the area and the sea.

Mientras caminamos entre las ruinas, nos hacemos una idea no solo de cómo debió ser la estructura original, sino también de para qué fue construida, ya que desde su ubicación se puede tener una vista amplia de la zona y del mar.

When we went, the castle was empty and that can be good because there are no tourists everywhere and you can take photos without interruption, but it can also be counterproductive, since you do not know what kind of people or animals you might find behind the rubble. Therefore, my recommendation is to go accompanied, not alone.

Cuando fuimos, el castillo estaba vacío, lo cual puede ser bueno porque no hay turistas por todas partes y se pueden tomar fotos sin interrupciones, pero también puede ser contraproducente, ya que no se sabe qué tipo de personas o animales se pueden encontrar entre los escombros. Por lo tanto, mi recomendación es ir acompañado, no solo.

Since the Castle does not have a roof, it is ideal to use plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and light clothing. Some areas are uneven and have stones, but in general, you can walk around comfortably. I wore beach sandals and was able to walk without any inconvenience.

Dado que el castillo no tiene techo, es recomendable usar abundante protector solar, un sombrero y ropa ligera. Algunas zonas son irregulares y tienen piedras, pero en general se puede caminar cómodamente. Yo llevaba sandalias de playa y pude caminar sin ningún inconveniente.

One of the things that stands out the most is the type of stone with which this fortress is made. According to what I could find on Google, it is made with blocks of Argamasa, which is why there are many marine remains within its walls.

Una de las cosas que más destaca es el tipo de piedra con la que está hecha esta fortaleza. Según lo que pude encontrar en Google, está hecha con bloques de Argamasa, por lo que hay muchos restos marinos dentro de sus muros.

As we go up or move forward, we get more beautiful views, but we have to be careful with the breeze, as it becomes stronger. So much so that my idea was to take a picture at the highest part, but I didn't dare: the breeze was mischievous.

A medida que subimos o avanzamos, obtenemos vistas más hermosas, pero debemos tener cuidado con la brisa, ya que se vuelve más fuerte. Tanto es así que mi idea era tomar una foto en la parte más alta, pero no me atreví: la brisa era traviesa.

After touring the castle, we went down to bathe in the blue and crystal-clear waters of Playa el Castillo, which is right next to this fortress. We stayed there until the afternoon, waiting for the sun to set, since from there you can see the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen. In the end, we left happy and satisfied, because nature is magnificent.

Después de recorrer el castillo, bajamos a bañarnos en las aguas azules y cristalinas de Playa el Castillo, que está justo al lado de esta fortaleza. Nos quedamos allí hasta la tarde, esperando a que el sol se pusiera, ya que desde allí se pueden ver los atardeceres más hermosos que hayas visto. Al final, nos fuimos felices y satisfechos, porque la naturaleza es magnífica.
