Although it almost never rains in this part of the world, on the Caribbean coast, a tropical wave is passing through that has brought many dark clouds but little rain. We residents of this part of the country, Venezuela, are already accustomed to scarce rainfall and to the sun rising very early each day and setting in the late afternoon.

Perhaps it was with this certainty in mind that we decided to go to the Araya Peninsula, even though weather reports were forecasting heavy rainfall.

Aunque casi nunca llueve en esta parte del mundo, en la costa caribeña está pasando una onda tropical que ha traído muchas nubes oscuras, pero poca lluvia. Los que vivimos en esta zona de Venezuela ya estamos acostumbrados a las escasas precipitaciones y a que el sol salga muy temprano cada día y se ponga a última hora de la tarde.

Quizás fue pensando en esta certeza por lo que decidimos ir a la península de Araya, a pesar de que los parte meteorológicos pronosticaban fuertes lluvias.

To get to Araya, a peninsula located north of Cumaná, you can travel by sea or by land. If you choose to go by sea, there are many ways to make this trip: on a large ship called La Palita, on ferries or motorboats, or on small vessels such as peñeros or rowboats. We took the motorboat, and the trip took about 40 minutes.

Para llegar a Araya, una península situada al norte de Cumaná, se puede viajar por mar o por tierra. Si se opta por ir por mar, hay muchas formas de hacer este viaje: en un gran barco llamado La Palita, en transbordadores o lanchas a motor, o en embarcaciones más pequeñas, como peñeros o botes de motor. Nosotros tomamos la lancha a motor y el trayecto duró unos 40 minutos.

When we arrived in Araya, we found dark clouds overhead, but we headed to El Castillo Beach, which is relatively close to the town’s ferry terminal. Before reaching the beach, we had some delicious empanadas for breakfast. Although there was a wide variety of fillings—cheese, fish, meat, chicken—I opted for a squid and shrimp empanada that was absolutely delicious. If you ever visit this part of the country, I highly recommend not skipping the empanadas: the empanadas here are absolutely heavenly.

Cuando llegamos a Araya, nos encontramos con nubes oscuras sobre nuestras cabezas, pero nos dirigimos a la playa de El Castillo, que está relativamente cerca de la terminal marítima de la ciudad. Antes de llegar a la playa, compramos unas deliciosas empanadas para desayunar. Aunque había una gran variedad de rellenos —queso, pescado, carne, pollo—, yo me decidí por una empanada de calamar y gambas que estaba absolutamente deliciosa. Si alguna vez visitas esta parte del país, te recomiendo encarecidamente que no te pierdas las empanadas: aquí son absolutamente divinas.

As we walked, we could see the clouds gathering overhead: it seemed rain was imminent. Once we reached the beach, we discovered that the owners of the umbrellas hadn’t set them up, and the few that were up were already taken, so we decided to take shelter in a makeshift hut built by local fishermen, where we left our things.

Mientras caminábamos, veíamos cómo se acumulaban las nubes sobre nuestras cabezas: parecía que la lluvia era inminente. Al llegar a la playa, descubrimos que los propietarios de las sombrillas no las habían montado, y las pocas que había ya estaban ocupadas, así que decidimos refugiarnos en una cabaña improvisada construida por los pescadores locales, donde dejamos nuestras cosas.

Although dark clouds continued to threaten rain, people were swimming and enjoying the calm sea in high spirits. It’s true that the locals apologized for not being fully operational because rain was threatening to fall, and they preferred to shelter the food and items they normally offer to tourists. Even so, we made do with some snacks and drinks we had brought along.

Aunque las nubes oscuras seguían amenazando con llover, la gente se bañaba y disfrutaba del mar en calma con gran alegría. Es cierto que los lugareños se disculparon por no estar en pleno funcionamiento, ya que amenazaba con llover y preferían resguardar la comida y los artículos que normalmente ofrecen a los turistas. Aun así, nos conformamos con algunos aperitivos y bebidas que habíamos traído.

We hadn't been on the beach for an hour when a torrential downpour began, forcing people out of the water to take shelter in makeshift huts made of palm leaves, since the beach umbrellas had been immediately taken down by their owners, as many of them had been blown away by the breeze.

No llevábamos ni una hora en la playa cuando empezó a llover a cántaros, lo que obligó a la gente a salir del agua y refugiarse en chozas improvisadas hechas con hojas de palmera, ya que los propietarios habían recogido inmediatamente las sombrillas, pues muchas de ellas se habían volado con la brisa.

Sheltered from the rain, we were able to appreciate a new landscape. Although I've been to Araya many times, I'd never seen it rain like that: the blue of the sky and sea turned gray, and the white sand took on an ochre hue. It seemed like a different landscape, almost unreal, like something out of an Impressionist painting, where everything around us was blurred, and we seemed blind, trying to see what was in front of us.

Protegidos de la lluvia, pudimos apreciar un paisaje nuevo. Aunque he estado en Araya muchas veces, nunca había visto llover así: el azul del cielo y del mar se tornó gris, y la arena blanca adquirió un tono ocre. Parecía un paisaje diferente, casi irreal, como sacado de una pintura impresionista, donde todo a nuestro alrededor se veía borroso y parecíamos ciegos, intentando distinguir lo que teníamos delante.

When the rain stopped, we gradually began to leave our shelters and walk to the terminal. There we learned that due to the heavy rain, no boats were leaving, so we had no choice but to find a place to stay for the night.

Cuando dejó de llover, poco a poco empezamos a salir de nuestros refugios y a caminar hacia la terminal. Allí nos enteramos de que, debido a las fuertes lluvias, no salían barcos, así que no nos quedó más remedio que buscar un lugar donde pasar la noche.

We were incredibly lucky to find an inn near the bus terminal called Paulina Mar. It's a beautiful inn with a restaurant, good prices, and, most importantly, excellent service. They have the best hosts in Araya.

The next day in Araya was quite different: full of sunshine and people, as always, but we'll write about that in another post.
