These ancient trade route towns have a timeless quality to them.
As for danger. I think it's how we approach these places that matter the most. If we give off fearful vibes we get it back in spades.

I find these places perfectly safe.
Me too. I've never experienced anything dangerous anywhere I've been including Lebanon and the Syrian borderlands.
