A Refreshing Stay in Badgastein, Salzburg (ENG-GER)

My struggle with severe back pain had become overwhelming after many years of working as an accountant for multinational companies in Vienna. Over time, I tried various therapies, treatments, and rehabilitation programs in the city, but the pain always seemed to return.

When the opportunity came up last year to experience physical therapy in the beautiful Alpine region, I decided to participate in and joined as a “plus-one” guest where I had the chance to spend time in Bad Gastein for three weeks, all inclusive — a place where nature, healing, and relaxation come together. Through this blog, I hope to share my personal experience and provide useful information for anyone considering a wellness escape, a healing retreat, or simply a memorable vacation in the Gastein Valley.

Mein Kampf gegen starke Rückenschmerzen wurde nach vielen Jahren als Buchhalterin bei internationalen Unternehmen in Wien zunehmend belastend. Im Laufe der Zeit habe ich verschiedene Therapien, Behandlungen und Rehabilitationsprogramme in der Stadt ausprobiert, doch die Schmerzen kamen immer wieder zurück.

Als sich letztes Jahr die Gelegenheit ergab, eine Physiotherapie in der wunderschönen Alpenregion zu erleben, habe ich diese Chance ergriffen. Ich durfte als „Plus-One“-Gast nach Bad Gastein mitkommen und eine besondere Zeit an einem Ort verbringen, an dem Natur, Heilung und Erholung miteinander verbunden sind. Mit diesem Blog möchte ich meine persönlichen Erfahrungen teilen und hilfreiche Informationen für alle geben, die über einen Wellnessaufenthalt, eine Gesundheitsreise oder einfach einen unvergesslichen Urlaub im Gasteinertal nachdenken.

BADGASTEIN - Stubnerkogel

We arrived in our spacious apartment overlooking the amazing chain of Alpine mountains right before our eyes from our balcony. We made our first exploration by making a tour to Bergstation Stubnerkogel, the lift is just next to our chalet. The ticket was more cheaper online than by buying it at the ticket booth.

Wir kamen in unserer geräumigen Ferienwohnung an, von deren Balkon aus wir direkt vor unseren Augen die atemberaubende Alpenkette bewundern konnten. Unsere erste Erkundungstour führte uns zur Bergstation Stubnerkogel – die Seilbahn befindet sich direkt neben unserem Chalet. Das Ticket war online günstiger als am Ticketschalter.

Elisabeth Promenade - Böckstein

I love exploring this area. If you enjoy spending time in nature, you shouldn’t miss this area. There’s a beautiful hiking trail to the Böckstein that’s about 6 km round trip. Empress Elisabeth used to come here to relax. It’s a wonderful place to hike along the stream from the Stubnerkogel to the Bockstein. The highlight of the hike is the Baroque church (built in 1764) with its beautiful frescoes. There’s a café nearby where you can take a break.

_Ich liebe es, diese Gegend zu erkunden. Wenn ihr gerne in der Natur unterwegs seid, solltet ihr euch diese Gegend nicht entgehen lassen. Es gibt einen schönen Wanderweg zum Böckstein, der etwa 6 km hin und zurück ist. Kaiserin Elisabeth kam früher hierher, um sich zu erholen. Ein wunderschöner Ort zum Wandern entlang des Baches vom Stubnerkogel zum Böckstein. Der Höhepunkt der Wanderung ist die Barockkirche (errichtet 1764) mit wunderschönen Fresken. In der Nähe gibt es ein Café, in dem ihr euch ausruhen könnt.

A Hike to Böckstein

One of the most beautiful hiking areas is the trail to Böckstein, which starts right at the Elisabethpromenade. After just a few steps, you’re immersed in a peaceful, idyllic landscape that instantly helps you slow down. Lush meadows, crisp air, and an impressive mountain backdrop accompany you along the entire route. This trail is perfect for leisurely hikes as well as Nordic walking. If you’d like to take it slower, you’ll find plenty of lovely spots to rest along the way—ideal for relaxing tired feet and simply enjoying nature.

Encounters with the animals are particularly enchanting, I love this part.... horses and cows graze peacefully in the meadows, lending the landscape an almost postcard-perfect atmosphere. In the village itself stands the parish church of Mary, Mother of Good Counsel, which impresses with its beautiful frescoes. In its courtyard lies a small, quiet cemetery that exudes a very special sense of peace and reflects village life.

To round off the hike perfectly, the “Gasthof zur Post” invites you in—a place to settle in, take a deep breath, and savor the moment. Here, you can relax with a drink and treat yourself to seasonal culinary delights before heading back. A walk that not only gets your legs moving but also touches your soul.

Eine der schönsten Wandergegenden ist der Weg nach Böckstein, der direkt von der Elisabethpromenade ausgeht. Schon nach wenigen Schritten taucht man in eine ruhige, idyllische Landschaft ein, die sofort entschleunigt. Saftige Wiesen, klare Luft und eine beeindruckende Bergkulisse begleiten den gesamten Weg. Diese Strecke eignet sich perfekt für gemütliches Wandern, ebenso wie für Nordic Walking. Wer es langsamer angehen möchte, findet entlang der Route immer wieder schöne Plätze zum Ausruhen – ideal, um die müden Füße zu entspannen und einfach die Natur

Besonders bezaubernd sind die Begegnungen mit den Tieren. Ich liebe diese Begegnung mit Pferde und Kühe weiden friedlich auf den Wiesen und verleihen der Landschaft eine Atmosphäre, die fast wie aus einem Bilderbuch wirkt. Im Dorf selbst steht die Pfarrkirche „Maria, Mutter des guten Rates“, die mit ihren wunderschönen Fresken beeindruckt. In ihrem Innenhof befindet sich ein kleiner, ruhiger Friedhof, der eine ganz besondere Ruhe ausstrahlt und das Dorfleben widerspiegelt.

Um die Wanderung perfekt abzurunden, lädt der „Gasthof zur Post“ zum Verweilen ein – ein Ort, an dem man sich niederlassen, tief durchatmen und den Moment genießen kann. Hier können Sie bei einem Getränk entspannen und sich mit saisonalen kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten verwöhnen lassen, bevor Sie sich auf den Rückweg machen. Eine Wanderung, die nicht nur die Beine in Schwung bringt, sondern auch die Seele berührt.

Sportgastein

We’ve visited Sportgastein twice, and it was a fantastic experience both times. It’s a beautiful place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the magnificent nature and scenery. The Hohe Tauern National Park is a great area to explore. We took the 550 bus from the Badgastein train station to Sportgastein using our Guest Mobility Ticket. We didn’t pay any tolls—perhaps because it was before the ski season. The Gastein Alpine Road is privately owned and has set the following toll rates, for your information. Tolls: €6.50 per person in a car; per person in a car with a guest card.

Wir haben Sportgastein zweimal besucht und waren jedes Mal begeistert. Ein wunderschöner Ort zum Entspannen und Genießen der beeindruckenden Natur im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Mit dem Guest Mobility Ticket fuhren wir bequem mit dem Bus 550 ab Bad Gastein Bahnhof. Bei unserem Besuch vor der Skisaison fiel keine Maut an. Für Autofahrer ist die Gasteiner Alpenstraße mautpflichtig (letztes Jahr 6.50 Euro pro Person, mit Gästekarte ermäßigt).

Valeriehaus - Sportgastein

After a long, absolutely beautiful hike up to the Naßfeldalm in Sportgastein, we started to get hungry—and fate (or simply good timing) led us straight to the Valeriehaus, right near the bus stop. As soon as we arrived, it was clear: this is one of those places where you want to stay. A cozy atmosphere, warm hospitality, and that breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain landscape—a real postcard scene. The regional cuisine was simply fantastic: authentic, down-to-earth, and incredibly delicious. Every dish tasted of quality, home, and genuine Alpine tradition. Add to that the panoramic view—you could hardly ask for a better way to round off a hike. A place I wholeheartedly recommend—for hikers

Nach einer langen, absolut wunderschönen Wanderung hinauf zur Naßfeldalm in Sportgastein bekamen wir langsam Hunger – und das Schicksal (oder einfach nur gutes Timing) führte uns direkt zum Valeriehaus, ganz in der Nähe der Bushaltestelle. Sobald wir ankamen, war klar: Das ist einer dieser Orte, an denen man einfach bleiben möchte. Eine gemütliche Atmosphäre, herzliche Gastfreundschaft und dieser atemberaubende Blick auf die umliegende Berglandschaft – eine echte Postkartenkulisse. Die regionale Küche war einfach fantastisch: authentisch, bodenständig und unglaublich lecker. Jedes Gericht schmeckte nach Qualität, nach Zuhause und nach echter alpiner Tradition. Dazu noch der Panoramablick – einen besseren Abschluss für eine Wanderung kann man sich kaum wünschen. Ein Ort, den ich von ganzem Herzen weiterempfehle – für Wanderer

From Badgastein to Badhofgastein on foot...

If you’re in Badgastein, why not try hiking from the train station to the waterfall along the river to Badhof Gastein—about 12 km—and treat yourself to a good cup of coffee and cake as a reward? Take the bus on the way back; the ride is free with the Gastein Mobility Ticket, which you’ll receive at your hotel during your vacation.

Wenn ihr in Badgastein seid, versucht doch mal, vom Bahnhof zum Wasserfall entlang des Flusses nach Badhof Gastein zu wandern, ca. 12 km, und gönnt euch als Belohnung einen guten Kaffee und Kuchen. Nehmt auf dem Rückweg den Bus, die Fahrt ist kostenlos mit dem Gastein Mobility Ticket, das ihr während eures Urlaubs in eurem Hotel bekommt.

Between the Waterfall and the Church tower:

This has taken a heavy toll on the building. Due to extensive structural damage, the church had to be closed and was undergoing renovations during our visit last September. Still, it’s worth a detour: You can catch a glimpse of the interior through small openings, and the church also makes for a great photo opportunity from the outside. In the video, you can hear the loud roar of the waterfall.

Die Bauwerks stark belastet hat. Aufgrund zahlreicher struktureller Schäden musste die Kirche daher geschlossen werden und befand sich bei unserem Besuch im September des vergangenen Jahres in Renovierung. Trotzdem lohnt sich ein Abstecher: Durch kleine Öffnungen lässt sich ein Blick ins Innere erhaschen, und auch von außen bietet die Kirche ein lohnendes Fotomotiv. Im Video kann man das laute Rauschen des Wasserfalls hören.

The Famous Bad Gastein Waterfall: A Must-See in the Town Center

This is one of the most spectacular and well-known waterfalls in Austria. It is located right in the center of Bad Gastein. Many buildings and houses have been built around the waterfall, giving the town a unique character. Bad Gastein is also famous for its spa facilities and healing thermal waters—visitors here for a spa treatment should definitely not miss this attraction. The waterfall has a total height of 341 meters and cascades down in three stages. Right next to the waterfall is the Kraftwerk Café, a cozy spot to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view of the cascading water. If you’re on foot, the walk to the waterfall is very easy and short. From the Bad Gastein train station, walk to the gas station and then head toward the Salzburger Hof, turning right down the slope until you reach the road leading to the waterfall.

Dies ist einer der spektakulärsten und bekanntesten Wasserfälle in Österreich. Er befindet sich direkt im Ortszentrum von Bad Gastein. Viele Gebäude und Häuser wurden rund um den Wasserfall errichtet, was ihm ein einzigartiges Stadtbild verleiht. Bad Gastein ist außerdem für seine Kuranlagen und das heilende Thermalwasser berühmt – wer hier zur Kur ist, sollte diese Attraktion auf keinen Fall verpassen. Der Wasserfall hat eine Gesamthöhe von 341 Metern und stürzt über drei Kaskaden hinab. Direkt am Wasserfall befindet sich das Kraftwerk Café, ein gemütlicher Ort, um zu entspannen und den atemberaubenden Ausblick auf das herabstürzende Wasser zu genießen. Wenn Sie zu Fuß unterwegs sind, ist der Weg zum Wasserfall sehr einfach und kurz. Vom Bahnhof Bad Gastein gehen Sie zur Tankstelle und anschließend in Richtung Salzburger Hof, rechts den Hang hinunter, bis Sie die Straße zum Wasserfall erreichen.

## Coincidence or Symbol? This Tree in Bad Gastein

We took a stroll through the center of Bad Gastein and, after a nice break at Café Sissy, continued uphill toward Hauptstraße. Walking past the Hotel Eden Rock and the Salzburger Hof, we came across an old Swiss stone pine—or pine tree—that had been cut down, presumably because it was diseased. However, a new tree trunk is growing right in the middle of it. If you’ve walked along this path, you must have noticed this tree. Interestingly, some of my friends suggested that the new trunk was deliberately placed in the center of the old tree to symbolize new growth. Do you think it was actually added—or what do you think about it?

Wir machten eine Erkundungstour durch das Zentrum von Bad Gastein und gingen nach einem netten Zwischenstopp im Café Sissy weiter nach oben in Richtung Hauptstraße. Entlang der Seite des Hotel Eden Rock und Salzburger Hofes kamen wir an einem alten Zirben- bzw. Pinienbaum vorbei, der gefällt worden war – vermutlich, weil er krank war. In seiner Mitte wächst jedoch ein neuer Baumstamm heran. Wenn ihr diesen Weg entlanggegangen seid, muss euch dieser Baum aufgefallen sein. Interessanterweise meinten einige meiner Freunde, dass der neue Stamm bewusst in die Mitte des alten Baumes eingesetzt wurde, um neues Wachstum zu symbolisieren. Glaubt ihr, dass er tatsächlich hinzugefügt wurde – oder was denkt ihr darüber?

Felsentherme-Bad Gastein

If you’re in Bad Gastein, be sure to set aside a little extra time to explore the area. The mountain panorama, the roaring waterfall right in the middle of town, and the relaxed atmosphere make for the perfect outing—whether you just want to splash around for a few hours or treat yourself to a full day of wellness. If you’d like to visit the Felsentherme Bad Gastein, you can relax and enjoy your time there just like any other guest, and decide for yourself when to come and go.

Wenn du in Bad Gastein bist, nimm dir ruhig ein bisschen extra Zeit fürs Drumherum. Das Bergpanorama, der tosende Wasserfall mitten im Ort und die entspannte Atmosphäre machen den Ausflug perfekt – egal ob du nur ein paar Stunden planschen willst oder gleich einen ganzen Wellnesstag einlegst.. Wenn du die Felsentherme Bad Gastein besuchen möchtest, kannst du dort ganz entspannt wie jeder andere Gast deine Zeit genießen und selbst entscheiden, wann du kommst und gehst.

Rossalm - Bad Gastein

Just a short distance above the Stubnerkogel valley station, across from the Felsentherme in Bad Gastein, lies the Rossalm—an ideal spot for walks before the start of the ski season. The terrain isn’t too steep, is easy to navigate, and offers magnificent views of the Gastein mountain panorama—perfect for a break with coffee or tea. Many hikers and Nordic walkers come here to stay in shape. The Rossalm restaurant welcomes everyone—skiers and non-skiers alike—with delicious Austrian cuisine. I always enjoy coming back here, especially to admire the seven sheep grazing peacefully in the alpine meadows.

Nur ein Stück oberhalb der Stubnerkogel-Talstation, gegenüber der Felsentherme in Bad Gastein, liegt die Rossalm – ein idealer Ort für Spaziergänge vor dem Start der Skisaison. Das Gelände ist nicht zu hoch, leicht zu bewältigen und bietet herrliche Ausblicke auf das Gasteiner Bergpanorama, perfekt für eine Pause mit Kaffee oder Tee. Viele Wanderer und Nordic Walker kommen hierher, um fit zu bleiben. Das Rossalm-Restaurant lädt ein – ob für Skifahrer oder Nicht-Skifahrer – mit leckerer österreichischer Küche. Ich komme immer wieder gern her, besonders wegen der sieben Schafe, die ich bewundere, die friedlich in den Almwiesen grasen.

Conclusion :

My three-week stay in Bad Gastein was the perfect combination of physiotherapy and a relaxing holiday. I enjoyed the thermal pools, sauna, gym, and exploring the beautiful surroundings. The food was excellent, and the friendly staff made my stay even more enjoyable. It was a truly refreshing and memorable experience.

Fazit : Mein dreiwöchige Kur Aufenthalt in Bad Gastein war die perfekte Kombination aus Physiotherapie und Erholung. Ich genoss die Thermalbäder, die Sauna, das Fitnessstudio und die wunderschöne Umgebung. Das Essen war hervorragend, und das freundliche Personal machte meinen Aufenthalt besonders angenehm. Es war eine rundum erholsame und unvergessliche Erfahrung.
