Exploring the Arturo Michelena Museum - Caracas, VEN [ENG-ESP]
Hello, my dear friends !
Today I want to share with you another of my travel adventures in the heart of Caracas, when I walked from Plaza La Pastora to the Arturo Michelena Museum. As soon as you walk through the door, you find yourself in a beautiful place that immediately transports you to the century in which this Venezuelan painter lived with his wife, Lastenia.
They welcomed me warmly and told me I could take as many photos as I wanted, but without a flash. Although the museum’s official guide wasn’t there that day, a security guard who was short on time accompanied us; he was super attentive and knew a few stories about the painter’s life.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes otra de mis aventuras viajeras en el pleno corazón de Caracas cuando caminando desde la Plaza La Pastora llegué al Museo Arturo Michelena. Apenas entras por la puerta, te encuentras con un lugar hermoso que de inmediato te traslada al siglo donde vivió este pintor venezolano junto a su esposa Lastenia.
Me recibieron con amabilidad y me aclararon que podía tomar todas las fotos que quisiera, pero,sin flash. Aunque ese día no estaba el Guía oficial del museo, nos acompañó un muchacho de seguridad que tenía poco tiempo, pero fue súper atento y se sabía algunos relatos sobre la vida del pintor.
This house-museum is immaculate and has two floors. It also has a fairly powerful air conditioner, so don’t worry about the heat. The young man told me that there are quite a few visitors every day, since the museum is a must-see stop on the La Pastora tourist route. Here’s a look at the main living room, the dining room, and the bedroom.
Esta casa- museo está impecable y consta de dos pisos. Además, cuenta con un aire acondicionado bastante potente, así que por el calor no se preocupen. El joven me estuvo contando que el flujo de visitantes a diario es bastante, ya que el museo es una parada obligatoria dentro de la ruta turística de La Pastora y acá les muestro; lo que es el salón principal, el comedor y la habitación.
As one might expect, nearly all of the paintings on display in the galleries were created by Arturo Michelena, and a large number of them are dedicated to his wife, Lastenia; the museum also features beautiful dolls created by other artists who were inspired by her, depicting her in various aspects of her life.
Como es de esperarse, casi la totalidad de las pinturas expuestas en las salas fueron realizadas por Arturo Michelena y hay gran parte de piezas dedicadas a su esposa Lastenia; ya que el museo también exhibe bellas muñecas creadas por otros artistas inspirados en ella, donde la plasman en varias facetas de su vida.
Among the stories told by the young man, he mentioned that the painter managed to marry Lastenia, but unfortunately they never consummated the marriage because he fell ill with tuberculosis almost immediately. It remains unclear whether this was true or merely a legend meant to explain why they had no children.
He also told me about these two paintings: one of them was returned by the Church at the time because Arturo Michelena painted the Virgin breastfeeding the Baby Jesus, something that was considered indecent back then; and the other painting is the “Virgin of the Betrothed,” whose religious silhouette hides the face of his own wife.
Dentro de los relatos contados por el joven, me dijo que el pintor logró casarse con Lastenia, pero lamentablemente no llegaron a consumar el matrimonio debido a que él enfermó de tuberculosis casi de inmediato. Queda la duda de si esto fue una realidad o es una leyenda para explicar que no tuvieron hijos.
Y también me habló sobre estos dos cuadros, que uno de ellos fue devuelto por la Iglesia en su época porque Arturo Michelena pintó a la virgen amamantando al Niño Jesús, algo que para ese entonces se consideraba indecoroso; y la otra pintura es la de la "Virgen de los desposados" cuya silueta religiosa esconde el rostro de su propia esposa.
In addition to the invaluable permanent collection dedicated to Michelena and his wife, the museum has an additional gallery that is updated periodically. This space features works by other visual artists, which I thought was a wonderful initiative to support the talent of other creators.
Además de toda la invaluable colección permanente dedicada a Michelena y su esposa, el museo tiene un salón adicional que se renueva cada cierto tiempo. En este espacio se exponen obras de otros artistas plásticos, lo que me pareció una iniciativa maravillosa, para apoyar el talento de otro creadores.

Here I’m just sharing a small selection of photos, but the museum is filled with many more details and art-filled objects in every corner. So if you’re in Caracas and want to discover this treasure for yourselves, I highly recommend it!♥️
