| 🇫🇷 Nous continuons le tour de l'île de Mayotte par vues aériennes. Les photographies d'aujourd'hui vous montrent le nord de l'île et la péninsule d'Handrema. C'est certainement l'endroit le plus inaccessible et inhabité de l'île. La pente du relief est très agressive, et rend l'accès compliqué. Pour autant, l'agriculture illégale parvient à trouver de la place et profite du manque de contrôle et de sanctions. La forêt sèche naturelle perd donc chaque année de la place au profit de monoculture de bananes vendues elles-aussi illégalement. Mais vu d'en haut et sans regarder en détails, l'endroit est superbe. On peut y voir le lagon des deux côtés depuis la crête, il existe quelques plages assez isolées aux eaux limpides, et sous l'eau la biodiversité reste présente malgré les dégâts fait par le cyclone Chido en 2024. A titre personnel, j'ai passé de nombreuses nuits au mouillage sur la partie droite de la première photographie. Une baie bien protégée attendait mon voilier au milieu d'un cirque montagneux, la baie d'Handrema. Une baie connu de tous les navigateurs faisant le tour de l'île en plusieurs étapes et cherchant une zone protégée pour y passer une nuit au calme. De très très bons souvenirs ! |
🇬🇧 We continue the tour of the island of Mayotte by aerial views. Today’s photographs show you the north of the island and the Handrema peninsula. It is certainly the most inaccessible and uninhabited place on the island. The slope of the terrain is very aggressive, and makes access complicated. However, illegal agriculture manages to find space and takes advantage of the lack of control and sanctions. The natural dry forest thus loses space every year in favor of banana monocultures, which are also illegally sold. But seen from above and without looking into details, the place is superb. You can see the lagoon on both sides from the ridge, there are a few fairly isolated beaches with clear waters, and underwater biodiversity remains present despite the damage caused by Cyclone Chido in 2024. Personally, I spent many nights at anchor on the right side of the first photograph. A well-protected bay was waiting for my sailboat in the middle of a mountainous cirque, Handrema Bay. A bay known to all navigators, circling the island in several stages and looking for a protected area to spend a quiet night. Very, very good memories! |

Spending nights anchored in a well-protected bay surrounded by mountains sounds like an incredible way to experience the place. It is a pity that illegal agriculture is slowly taking over the dry forest there though.
