🇫🇷 Je me lance avec cette série "STOP" dans le récit de quelques escales. Je ne vais pas les faire dans l'ordre chronologique, juste par envie des histoires pour dépoussiérer quelques vieux souvenirs.

Nous sommes ici à Rabaul en Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée.
🇬🇧 I’m embarking with this serie "STOP" in stories of a few stopovers. I won’t do them in order, just out of desire and to dust off some old memories.

We are here at Rabaul in Papua New Guinea.

🇫🇷 Le cap Vert compte 10 îles principales dont une inhabitée : Santa Luzia. Cette île est située dans le nord de l’archipel, dans la partie des îles « Barlavento », les îles au vent. Santa Luzai est une île aride, désertique qui sont certainement les raisons pour lesquelles aucune habitation pérenne n’y a vu le jour. Quelques têtes de bétails y ont été amenées par le passé, mais les différentes périodes de sécheresse en ont eu raison. Le décor est volcanique comme à peu près partout au Cap-Vert. De haute pentes terreuses parcourent le sud, tandis qu’au nord, les falaises sont davantage rocheuses.
🇬🇧 Cape Verde has 10 main islands, one of which is uninhabited: Santa Luzia. This island is located in the north of the archipelago, in the part of the 'Barlavento' islands, the windward islands. Santa Luzai is an arid, desert island which are certainly the reasons why no permanent settlement has been built there. A few livestock heads were brought there in the past, but the different periods of drought have been right. The scenery is volcanic like almost everywhere in Cape Verde. High earthy slopes run south, while to the north the cliffs are more rocky.

🇫🇷 Santa Luzia est une zone protégée depuis peu. Si l’administration a écrit les premières lignes de sa protection, la mise en pratique est quant à elle beaucoup plus évasive. Disons que pour l’instant, l’isolement de l’île et la dangerosité de la navigation pour que les barques de pêche traditionnelles y parviennent, sont la meilleure protection naturelle de Santa Luzia. Mais les embarcations se modernisent, les esprits aussi, et il faut se préparer à davantage de visites de bateaux sur cette île dans les années futures.
🇬🇧 Santa Luzia is a protected area since recently. If the administration has written the first lines of its protection, the implementation is much more evasive. Let’s say that for now, the isolation of the island and the danger of navigation for traditional fishing boats to reach it, are the best natural protection of Santa Luzia. But the boats are modernizing, the minds too, and we must prepare for more boat visits to this island in future years.

🇫🇷 Santa Luzia est un site remarquable de ponte des tortues caouannes. Chaque année, des centaines de nids sont comptés et des milliers de bébés tortues rejoignent la mer. De manière générale, le Cap-Vert est essentiel pour la reproduction des tortues caouannes. Les eaux autour de Santa Luzia sont très poissonneuses, mais les conditions de mer posent des problèmes aux embarcations artisanales pour s’y rendre. Seuls quelques pêcheurs tentent l’aventure. On y observe également les baleines à bosse durant la saison entre février et avril, des espèces de dauphins, et de nombreuses espèces de requins.
🇬🇧 Santa Luzia is a remarkable nesting site for loggerhead turtles. Every year, hundreds of nests are counted and thousands of baby turtles reach the sea. Generally speaking, Cape Verde is essential for the reproduction of loggerhead turtles. The waters around Santa Luzia are full of fish, but sea conditions pose problems for craft boats to get there. Only a few fishermen try the adventure. One also observes humpback whales during the season between February and April, species of dolphins, and many species of sharks.

🇫🇷 Dans les airs, la nature est également présente. Comme quoi, lorsque les îles sont désertées par l’Homme, elles sont colonisées par les animaux ! De nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux se réfugient sur ce cailloux aride. Notamment le puffin du Cap-Vert, mais aussi d’autres oiseaux marins plus communs dont le fou brun ou encore le paille en queue. Plusieurs ONG et autres organisations se relaient pour le comptage des oiseaux et leur préservation. Nous y avons fait escale plusieurs fois, notamment pour se reposer durant nos navigations entre l’île de San Nicolau et celle de San Vicente. La navigation est souvent rendue difficile par des effets de vent venturi, par des courants forts et des rafales parfois très violentes sous le vent des îles. Un cargo échoué dans la partie Est de l’île est là pour rappeler les conditions parfois violentes de la météo locale. Peu de bateaux se rendent donc jusqu’ici. Mais ceux qui y parviennent sont récompensés par des paysages sublimes et le doux sentiment de la solitude. A chaque fois, nous avons été impressionnés par la quiétude et l’isolement des lieux. Il n’y a rien ici, rien que la nature, les éléments parfois forts, et une lumière incroyable qui le soir venu et le matin venant, donnent à cette île tout la justification de son nom.
🇬🇧 In the air, nature is also present. Like what, when the islands are deserted by humans, they are colonized by animals! Many species of birds take refuge on this arid stone. Notably the shearwater from Cape Verde, but also other more common marine birds including the brown booby or even the straw in tail. Several NGOs and other organizations take turns counting birds and preserving them. We stopped there several times, notably to rest during our navigations between the islands of San Nicolau and San Vicente. Navigation is often made difficult by the effects of the venturi wind, strong currents and sometimes very violent gusts in the lee of the islands. A cargo ship stranded in the eastern part of the island is there to remind the sometimes violent conditions of the local weather. Few boats therefore make it this far. But those who succeed are rewarded with sublime landscapes and the sweet feeling of solitude. Each time, we were impressed by the tranquility and isolation of the place. There is nothing here, only nature, the sometimes strong elements, and an incredible light that in the evening and the morning coming, give this island all the justification for its name.
