Eastbound | Tungku Wiri Hill The Best Spot to See Lake Sentani

DSC08760.JPG

Seeing Lake Sentani From Tungku Wiri Hill

Lake Sentani is one of Papua must visit attractions. Its beauty lies in surrounding hills and the water that turns sparkling gold once the sun sets high. The area is also home to native local tribe called Sentani which have their own language and set of traditions.

The place is also home to beautiful hills called Tungku Wiri, which locals also call Teletubbies hills as it resembles the mountain range in the Teletubbies series.

Tungku Wiri hill is about 60 minutes’ drive from Jayapura, but when I was there, I lived in a district called Abepura which was only a 40 minutes ride to reach the hill. Along the way, we passed through the lakeside where we can see some traditional lake houses and villages where in front of the house, people also sell Matoa, traditional fruits commonly found in the area.

Visiting Tungku Wiri is like killing two birds with one stone. Not only did we get to enjoy the breathtaking view of the hill but also the lake beneath it where the water was calm.

As soon as we reach the area, we must hike through the stairs. It wasn’t a difficult hike but for people like me who haven’t hiked in months, it was a challenging hike. The stairs weren’t so intimidating, and it was easy to hike those who normally hike and active. But for me, it was moderately challenging, so I was quietly content making it up to the hill.

DSC08769.JPG

In the middle of the hike, as you stop and look back, you can see Cyclops mountain range that looks a bit foreign to my eyes. It’s normally something I only see in foreign countries landscapes and nature.

DSC08766.JPG

I can’t lie that I felt awe but also felt numb. I knew that it was all breathtaking, but my response dulled as if it was nothing special.

DSC08768.JPG

As soon as you reach the top of the hill you can continue further exploring the hills by going down these stairs. The lake stood still beneath the hills and its a good place to meditate and think about life.

DSC08783.JPG

Just look at its beauty! Yet again, I wonder why I felt nothing at all when I was there.

DSC08790.JPG

We were lucky because it was just a normal day so I could get these amazing shots of the place. Still. When I was there, I wondered why I didn’t feel anything, I was supposed to feel something seeing this beauty.

DSC08786.JPG

Maybe I traveled too much and saw too many beautiful things too often. Everything felt like a fast-moving scene. Before I could feel them, I moved on and saw other beautiful places.

DSC08806.JPG

DSC08793.JPG

We stayed around the hill for about an hour and even watched the airplane about to reach the airport as it flew so closely above us. Lake Sentani is also close to the Airport, even though the airport itself is called Sentani International Airport. So, this place is also the best spot to take pictures of the planes if you love aerophotography.

DSC08825.JPG

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, you must pay about 20.000 IDR to park and enter the place. It’s quite a small amount to pay to enjoy the place.

DSC08837.JPG

Perhaps, if I visited the place before I’ve seen other amazing things or rarely see breathtaking views, I would have been more appreciative of the place. From that I learned that sometimes I overdid my travel and it isn’t good either. Traveling supposed to make us feel grateful and in awe of what the world has to offer, not to make us numb to the beauty in front of us.

Anyhow, see you in my next Eastbound Journey or you can read some of it here :

Hey, this lake reminds me a lot of a lake in a park called Leofling here in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, although it's clearly a more mountainous area, a perfect place.

Oh wow! I am gonna look it up, if it looks similar, it must've been that awesome 😊

They are very different countries but I think they have very similar vegetation, maybe tomorrow I will go to that lake I mentioned because it is relatively close to me.

It seems like your visit to that place was perfectly timed because the weather wasn’t too hot. If it had been hotter, you would’ve been too exposed to the sun since there aren’t many trees there to provide shade.

For me, the view is really beautiful. It would be even nicer during sunrise and sunset.

😄 yes, we were visiting when it was around 2-3PM, otherwise, we'd burn as this place is really hot & not many place to shade. Apparently this place is also famous for the sunset. Sadly it was cloudy so we couldn't really see it.

This lake combined with the hill creates such a spectacular view! 😍
It’s a pity it’s so far from me, but who knows — maybe one day I’ll get the chance to see it in person.

Indeed! I wish I could have felt in full awe when I was there. Somehow, after the hike I felt nothing at all. I am glad the pictures does the justice to the place though :)

The lake together with the hills form an incredible whole to see and the sun illuminating everything makes the view even better. I can imagine it was a challenge to climb that staircase, it would be the same for me when I haven't walked for a while, but it would be worth it.

I think the fact that you didn't feel what you expected could be due to many reasons, maybe you had higher expectations about the place and as you mentioned having travelled so much, you didn't feel the thrill, or it could be the tiredness of the climb, it has happened to me. But looking at this beautiful place, I would stay there for a long time, it is beautiful. Thank you so much for bringing it to Hive!!!! Hug!

It was definitely challenging for me to hike especially I've been doing mostly desk job 😅 but it was worth it, for a brief moment, I was happy.

I really didn't have any higher expectations but I think it was mostly tiredness and the fact I traveled a lot the previous week. Though now, I am really happy that I actually share this story here and maybe I'll be grateful about it later on.

Have a great day and Happy New Year in Advance 😊

Tiredness has a lot of influence, as you mention, but I tell you, it's a beautiful place!!!! Enjoy it!

Colorful stairs lead directly to where the mountains meet the sky, and the view of the lake is breathtaking—one of those places that will surely take your breath away.

Hey there, Macchi! I know the feeling you experienced. I think some places we are meant to visit just once, maybe? Or, it also depends on the people accompanying you? For me, I know I experience places so, so much differently when I am by myself versus when I am with other people. Their presence affects the experience too? Like, they will provide their input about the experience and it will affect my time there as well. And for sure, as the time goes on our travel xp will affect how we view the places through the comparison. Regardless, I bet it was pretty nice to be out there in the wide open, with some breeze in the hair and sunshine! Lovely photography too! ^^
