Recently I went to Beziers in France for a couple of days. I was here for two nights, less than 48 hours because I wanted a break and it was cheaper for us to fly 1400km to France than to catch a 600km train up north to Edinburgh. Then I found a very interesting hotel in Beziers that was cheaper than a hotel in Edinburgh, making the whole France trip a no brainer.

Let me show you my hotel, it's one of the main reason I decided to come here. Welcome to Hotel La Prison.

Yes, Hotel La Prison is a real prison, or used to be. The prison is next to the cathedral and was built in 1867 to house 48 inmates. At it's peak there were 300 prisoners!! The prison closed in 2009, renovated and reopened as a 50 room 3 star hotel in 2017. Each cell became a standard room, with the cell in between two rooms split in half for the bathrooms. The rooms are basic, no air conditioning or TV - we're in a prison afterall!! You could see the hotel is designed to keep the original vibe, such as the railings, floor and vault ceiling. The bed was one of the most comfortable I slept in a prison hotel.

Beziers is quite a small town, which to be honest didn't have much to do. The most interesting activity was a walk along the canals at Fonseranes to see the nine locks. We started to walk from the Cathedral towards the Pont Vieux, the old bridge.

The Pont Vieux is a pedestrian bridge and looks quite majestic, both at night time looking down from the Cathedral, and looking back up to it.

This part of the canal is before I arrived at the locks. It's where I saw some emergency vehicles and a diver trying to retrieve something that had fallen into the water. If you joined my HPUD Guessing contest the other week, you'll find out what fell into the water in a minute.

The Fonseranes Nine Locks date back to 1680 and covers a distance of 315m with a 21.5m drop. This was taken at the top of the canal and you can see most of the locks, they're all very close together. The canal doesn't look very steep with the locks closed, but it's deemed too steep and dangerous for boats to go straight through.

It was very busy here, both with walkers and cyclists, and a lot of boats passing through. I saw quite a few cruise tours, it looked like an interesting experience going along the canal and through the locks.
All the locks had bridges on the top and some of them were quite low. Like this cruise boat, all the tourists had to go back to the deck downstairs, and the side railings lowered for the ship to pass through safely.
There are also many private leisure boats. It takes a while to open and close the locks, so they try to get as many boats in as safely possibly. We watched these three boats go through a couple of locks.

This guy in the last boat was very experienced. I watched as he steered his boat forward, sitting upright as he approached the bridge. He was so cool, playing dare devil and waited till the last second before he ducked down!! Phew!! That was close!

Time to reveal the answer to my HPUD Guessing Game. It was very nice to see a lot of responses and interesting guesses to my little guessing game. In total there were 27 guesses. One person guessed correctly on the first day, followed by a second correct answer later. The correct answer is a wheelchair. Congrats to @friendlymoose and @michupa! You will share the 200 HP prize pot which I will power up to you tomorrow on HPUD day.

Well done guys 🙂
I just hope the user of that wheelchair didn't end up at the bottom of that river, along with the wheelchair 🙂
There were a couple elderly gentlemen sat by the side of the canal, I think maybe it belonged to one them, but they were pretty chilled as well
That is such a unique hotel. Very cool. Looks like a neat experience. Great views of the town from that bridge.
Congrats to the winners on the guessing game. Really makes one wonder about the circumstances of that wheelchair in the canal
I figured it'd be an usual experience sleeping inside a prison cell. It was a little odd walking through the smaller than normal ex cell door 🙃
Yeah i could see there being a claustrophobia element there 😅
I say clickbait, I thought you had done some mischief! 😁😁 Cool place! Definitely seems a nice destiny for a getaway. Have fun in Spain, btw!
Gotcha!!! 😊
Thanks, meetups are always great, seeing friends again
The hotel is amazing! Ah, I would ride Béziers from start to finish on my bicycle, and I am sure I would have a wonderful time in those beautiful landscapes. Hahaha… I came back with my one-track mind (monotema). But you tempt me, just look at how many bicycles there are in these photos. Hahaha…
Congratulations to the winners! 🙌
Its a very nice ride along the canal, it goes on for quite long. I'm sure you will enjoy it
Imagine being decapitated going under a bridge. You'd feel like a right idjit.
Love that prison! Monasteries are cool to stay in as well. Perfect opportunity to create a hotel.
I was watching to see when he was going to duck, obviously he knew his stuff
I'd like to try monastery some time, I've done temple in Taiwan before, that was an experience
There's one in Jerez de Frontera
Oh wow, that must have been such an experience! I am still not sure whether I'd feel confortable to sleep there or not, but I do appreciate unique accommodation locations haha
It was ok, the bed was very comfortable. The only time when the prison thought came up is when I saw the small window high up in the bathroom. Now looking at the bedroom, it seems like they may have opened it up
as long as you could sleep well and the place is clean and reasonably priced, it is all good as a tourist to be there
That's the whole point
All you need to do is punch a copper, then you get the prison experience for free.
That's a good point, it will save me a bit of cash... but I don't think I'll get such a comfy bed
What a beautiful area! That prison looks pretty tight, but it would be cool to say you experienced it! There is a train from France to Scotland? Doesn't the ocean get in the way?
I meant a train trip to Scotland Vs a flight to France from where I am. But to answer your question, there are trains from London to France across the channel tunnel called the Eurostar. It's an alternative to flying, perfect for people like @steevc who doesn't like to fly
I'm not a fan of flying either, so that is pretty cool.
Hi @livinguktaiwan, the hotel is interesting and the bed looks very comfortable. The views are incredible, a very different experience from conventional hotels. They were ingenious in converting a prison into a hotel; definitely nothing goes to waste, and they made the most of the structure.
Happy weekend!
It's a great use of a historical building and they did a great job of it
Wow, what an experience.I can't imagine myself, but the inside looks like a typical condo, though.
It is in deed
You made a very wonderful visit to Bezier in France, the place so beautiful and France had a very nice places.
There wasn't much to do at Bezier, but yes, France has some very nice places

Oh no hopefully the person is fine that had the problem with that!! well last time I went to Edinburgh I stayed in a hostel so not sure how expensive is a hotel there xD. But it is an interesting concept of the hotel heheh
I'm not sure how the wheelchair fell in the canal, but everyone there was safe and sound, so all good, I guess
Nooo! It really was a wheelchair 😬😂
Thanks for the delegation!

What a novel idea, turning a prison into a hotel. Very clever use of space!
It was very cool.
First time to see such wonderful prison.
