Worldmappin - On the way to Uruguay to spend the long weekend: just in time to enjoy the sunset. / En camino a Uruguay para pasar el fin de semana largo: justo a tiempo para disfrutar el atardecer. 😃❤️

The long Carnival weekend is one of the most anticipated by travelers who work because there are four days off to go on a trip. Of course, I was looking forward to it too, because I wanted to take the opportunity to go somewhere great. I had been wanting to visit our neighboring country for a long time, and I thought this was the perfect opportunity. Luckily, everything worked out well for me and I was able to make this wish come true, on what was a long journey from home in Buenos Aires to Piriápolis in Uruguay, with several stops along the way 😃.

El fin de semana largo de los carnavales es uno de los más esperados por los viajeros que trabajan porque hay cuatro días libres para poder ir a pasear. Por supuesto que yo también lo estaba esperando, porque quería aprovechar para ir a algún lugar genial. Hace tiempo que tenía ganas de ir a visitar nuestro país vecino y me parecía que esta era una oportunidad perfecta. Por suerte, todo se alineó bien para mí y pude concretar este deseo, en lo que fue un largo viaje desde casa en Buenos Aires hasta Piriápolis en Uruguay, con varias paradas intermedias 😃.

In my case, I had time off from Saturday until Wednesday morning, so we arranged our trip to fit within that time. This time, my companions were my aunt and my cousin, who enjoy traveling just as much as I do. The three of us have already traveled together on other occasions, so we know well the kind of dynamic we like to have. We started the trip very early on Saturday morning, heading north, and after about 5 hours of driving, we made our first stop in the city of Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos.

En mi caso, yo tenía libre desde el sábado hasta el miércoles por la mañana, así que arreglamos nuestro paseo para que encaje en ese tiempo. En esta oportunidad, mis acompañantes fueron mi tía y mi primo, quienes disfrutan mucho los viajes al igual que yo. Nosotros tres ya hemos ido de viaje en otras oportunidades, así que sabemos bien la dinámica que nos gusta tener. Empezamos el paseo muy temprano el sábado a la mañana camino al norte, en donde después de unas 5 horas de auto, tuvimos nuestra primera parada en la ciudad de Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos.

If your wish is to go to Uruguay by land, it is necessary to reach this city in order to use the bridge that crosses to the other side. The Fray Bentos border crossing is one of the borders we have for crossing from one country to another, and it is only half an hour from Gualeguaychú. Another option to get to Uruguay is to take a boat that crosses the Río de la Plata, but our idea was to do everything with the pickup truck. Crossing the border wasn't difficult at all: we only had to pay a fee like a toll, they checked the vehicle a little, and then we were already on the other side.

Si tu deseo es ir a Uruguay por la vía terrestre, es necesario llegar a esta ciudad para poder aprovechar el puente que cruza hacia el otro lado. El paso Fray Bentos es una de las fronteras que tenemos para poder cruzar de país y queda solo a media hora de Gualeguaychú. Otra opción para llegar a Uruguay es tomar un barco que cruce el Río de La Plata, pero nuestra idea era hacer todo con la camioneta. Cruzar la frontera no fue nada difícil: solo tuvimos que pagar una tarifa como peaje, nos revisaron un poco el vehículo y luego ya estábamos del otro lado.

Our main destination was to reach the beach in Piriápolis, but it was too much for just one day, so we first made a stop at a small seaside resort called Las Cañas. This place is like a large campsite, so we set up our tents there and took advantage of the last sunlight of the afternoon. Since it was February, we were still in the middle of summer, so there were many people enjoying the day by the river. That was when I used my international credit card for the first time to buy some cookies to have with mate, since I didn't have a single Uruguayan peso bill.

Nuestro destino principal era llegar a la playa de Piriápolis, pero era demasiado para un día solo, así que primero hicimos una parada en un pequeño balneario llamado Las Cañas. Este lugar es como un gran camping, así que allí preparamos nuestras carpas y aprovechamos el último sol que quedaba de la tarde. Como era febrero, todavía estábamos en el pleno verano, así que había mucha gente aprovechando el día a orillas del río. En ese momento fue cuando estrené mi tarjeta de crédito internacional para comprar unas galletitas para tomar mate, ya que no tenía ni un billete de peso uruguayo.

Something I loved about Uruguay, and which is the second time I've seen there, is its sunset over the water. Most of the sunsets I've seen in my life happen over the mountains, but in this case, we were able to see it perfectly on the horizon of the river. We had a dreamlike sunset, and it was so hot that we stayed in the water until it was almost dark. Another curious thing is that Uruguayans applauded during the sunset, which I found funny but emotional at the same time because I love how wonderful nature is. It was a great experience.

Algo que me encantó de Uruguay y que es la segunda vez que lo veo, es su puesta de sol en el agua. La mayoría de los atardeceres que vi en mi vida ocurren sobre la cordillera, pero en este caso, lo pudimos ver perfectamente en el horizonte del río. Tuvimos una puesta de sol soñada, y hacía tanto calor que estuvimos metidos en el agua hasta que casi se hizo de noche. Otra cosa curiosa es que los uruguayos aplaudían durante la puesta de sol, algo que me resultó gracioso pero emotivo a la vez porque me encanta lo maravillosa que es la naturaleza. Fue una gran experiencia.

Traveling to Uruguay with my aunt and my cousin was one of the great trips of this year. I had already visited Uruguay in 2022 with my friend Sofía, but on that occasion we spent one night in Colonia del Sacramento, traveling by boat. This time, we would go a little farther and explore the Uruguayan roads, so I was excited. Every little trip ends up becoming something dear to the soul, so I was happy to have been able to do it. And what better time than summer, to enjoy the heat in the water and with a magnificent show 😃.

Viajar a Uruguay con mi tía y mi primo fue uno de los grandes paseos de este año. Yo ya había visitado Uruguay en 2022 con mi amiga Sofía, pero en esa oportunidad fuimos una noche a Colonia del Sacramento en el barco. Esta vez, iríamos un poco más allá y conoceríamos las rutas uruguayas, así que estaba emocionada. Cada pequeño viaje se termina transformando en un cariño al alma, así que me alegré por haber podido hacerlo. Y que mejor en el verano, para poder aprovechar el calor dentro del agua y con un espectáculo grandioso 😃.
