Uruguay - Piriápolis Beach, the destination I wanted to visit during my long weekend getaway. / La Playa de Piriápolis, el destino que quería conocer en mi escapada de fin de semana largo. 😃❤️

One of the places on my travel bucket list was Piriápolis Beach, in our neighboring country of Uruguay. I had heard a lot about this beach from my cousin, who loves this country and had traveled around it quite a bit. After organizing our schedules, we managed to arrange a visit together during the four-day Carnival weekend. It was a good decision, since getting there by pickup truck took us a day and a half 😃.

Uno de los lugares que tenía en mi lista de deseos viajeros era la Playa de Piriápolis, en nuestro país vecino Uruguay. Había escuchado mucho sobre esta playa por parte de mi primo, a quien le encanta este país y había viajado bastante en él. Después de organizar nuestros horarios, pudimos coordinar para visitar juntos este lugar durante el fin de semana de cuatro días de carnavales. Fue una buena decisión, ya que llegar hasta allá en camioneta nos tomó un día y medio 😃.

We started our trip early Saturday morning, and on our first day we were able to visit the city of Gualeguaychú in Entre Ríos, and later cross the border and head to Las Cañas beach resort in Uruguay. The distance between our home and Piriápolis by road is only 350 km, which isn't particularly far, but we preferred to do the journey in two stages. The next day, we got up very early to pack up our camp and head toward the beach. The weather threatened rain and delivered it for almost the entire journey, but we still hoped the weather would improve in the afternoon.

Arrancamos nuestro paseo el sábado a la madrugada y en nuestro primer día pudimos visitar la ciudad de Gualeguaychú en Entre Ríos, y más tarde cruzar la frontera e ir hasta el balneario Las Cañas, en Uruguay. La distancia que separa nuestra casa de Piriápolis en la vía terrestre es de solo 350 km, una distancia no muy larga, pero que preferimos hacer en dos tramos. Al día siguiente, nos levantamos muy temprano para juntar nuestro campamento y dirigirnos hacia la playa. El clima amenazó y cumplió con lluvia casi todo el camino, pero aún teníamos la esperanza de que el clima mejorara en horas de la tarde.

Indeed, that’s exactly how it turned out. By the time we arrived at Piriápolis Beach, the sky was still gray, but it was no longer raining. Since it was the middle of February, it was hot and humid, making for a slightly sticky day, but perfect for cooling off at the beach. Our first stop was at the typical sign with colorful letters, where we took hundreds of photos to have as memories of this place. My aunt and I love photo sessions, so of course, we took lots of them.

Efectivamente, así fue. Para cuando llegamos a la playa de Piriápolis, el cielo aún seguía gris, pero ya no estaba lloviendo. Como era pleno Febrero, hacía calor con humedad, un día un poco pegajoso, pero perfecto para refrescarse un poco en la playa. Nuestra primera parada fue en el típico cartel con letras de colores, en donde nos tomamos cientos de fotos para tener de recuerdo de este lugar. A mi tía y a mí nos encantan las sesiones de fotos, así que por supuesto tomamos muchas.

Our plan in Piriápolis was to stay at a nearby campsite, so we headed there first to get settled in and then go to the beach later. Compared to Argentina, everyone says that Uruguay is quite expensive. However, at least on the first day, I didn’t get that impression. The campsite we stayed at charged us $10 per person, which I think is about what a place like that would have cost us in Argentina (or even less). As for food, our car was packed with supplies to eat at the campsite, so we only had to buy some meat and some ice for our drinks.

Nuestra idea en Piriápolis era tener una estadía en un camping cercano, así que primero nos dirigimos ahí para acomodarnos un poco y más tarde ir a la playa. En comparación a Argentina, todo el mundo dice que Uruguay es bastante costoso. Sin embargo, al menos en el primer día, yo no tuve esa sensación. El camping al que fuimos nos cobró $10 por persona, que creo que es lo que nos podría haber salido un lugar así en Argentina (o incluso, más barato). Con respecto a la comida, nuestro auto fue cargado de provisiones para comer en el campamento, así que solo tuvimos que comprar un poco de carne y algo de hielo para las bebidas.

The great thing about this campsite, called Camping Piria, is that it is very close to the beach, so we could get there very quickly by pickup truck. My cousin’s favorite spot on the beach is the area in front of the Gran Hotel Argentino, which I found rather amusing. The entire Piriápolis beachfront looked very elegant, with a commercial area stretching parallel to the coastline. In the distance, you can also see small hills that add to the scenery. Of course, I was seeing all of this for the first time in person, since although I wanted to visit this beach, I had no idea what it actually looked like.

Lo bueno de este camping, llamado Camping Piria, es que está muy cerca de la playa, así que con la camioneta llegábamos muy rápido. El lugar preferido de mi primo en la playa es el espacio frente al Gran Hotel Argentino, algo que me resultó curioso. Toda la zona de la playa de Piriápolis se veía muy elegante, con un centro comercial que se extiende paralelo a la línea de la costa. También a lo lejos se ven pequeñas elevaciones que adornan el paisaje. Por supuesto, que todo esto lo vi por primera vez in situ, ya que aunque yo quería ir a conocer esta playa, no tenía idea de cómo se veía.

Although I will always prefer the mountains, going to the beach isn’t a bad plan either, at least for a short trip. These days spent with my aunt and cousin were great: we had a lot of fun traveling in the pickup truck and finally making it to Piriápolis. Even though they had both been there before, they enjoyed it just as much as I did. When we finally had some time to lie down on the sand and relax, it felt really nice. On that first day, I wasn’t brave enough to go for a swim, but dipping my feet in the water and recharging with the energy of the sea was enough for me❤️.

Si bien yo siempre voy a preferir la montaña, ir a la playa tampoco es mal plan, al menos para un viaje corto. Estos días compartidos con mi tía y mi primo fueron geniales: nos entretuvimos mucho viajando en la camioneta y finalmente llegando a Piriápolis. Aunque ellos dos ya conocían este lugar, lo disfrutaron tanto como yo. Cuando finalmente tuvimos tiempo de acostarnos en el arena a descansar, se sintió muy bien. En ese primer día no fui tan valiente como para darme un baño en el agua, pero mojarme los pies y recargarme de la energía del mar fue suficiente para mí ❤️.
