Paraguay - In search of the hidden bar in Asunción: we almost gave up, but we finally found it. / En busca del bar oculto en Asunción: casi nos rendimos pero finalmente lo encontramos. 😃❤️

I like it when memorable outings come up during a trip, and I was sure that would happen once I reunited with my friend Noe in Paraguay. We had both had a great experience during our volunteer work in Salta, Argentina, and I was hoping the same would happen while we explored Asunción. Since she had already been in the city for over a month, she moved around the streets comfortably, which was helpful for me to have an almost-local guide and to discover places I wouldn’t have visited on my own 😃.

Me gusta cuando en el viaje surgen paseos memorables y estaba segura de que eso pasaría una vez que me reencontrara con mi amiga Noe en Paraguay. Las dos habíamos tenido una grata experiencia durante nuestro voluntariado en Salta, Argentina, y esperaba que pasara lo mismo mientras visitábamos Asunción. Como ella ya llevaba más de un mes en la ciudad, ya se manejaba cómodamente en las calles, lo que a mí me sirvió para tener una guía casi local, y para descubrir lugares que sola no hubiese visitado 😃.

One of the afternoons I was walking around Asunción, Noe told me about a bar she wanted us to visit. She hadn’t been there before, so she thought it would be a good idea to discover it together. As usual, I don’t really pay much attention to where we’re going—I just trust my guide at the time and start walking. Since Asunción is a big city, I knew we would be walking quite a bit, so I put on comfortable clothes and we headed toward an area called Loma de San Jerónimo.

Una de las tardes que estuve paseando por Asunción, Noe me comentó sobre un bar que quería que visitemos. Ella no lo conocía, así que pensó que sería buena idea descubrirlo juntas. Como siempre, yo nunca me fijo muy bien hacia donde vamos: solo confío en mi guía de turno y empiezo a caminar. Como Asunción es una ciudad grande, supe que caminaríamos bastante, así que me puse ropa cómoda y salimos hacia una zona llamada Loma de San Gerónimo.

Big cities have their beautiful sides, but also their less touristy areas, and I admit that when I saw we were getting quite far from the center, I got a bit scared. I was even more uneasy when we started looking for the bar in a neighborhood full of small passageways and staircases. Everything looked very picturesque and well-kept, but at the same time it was quiet and almost empty. I’m not very brave when it comes to possible insecurity, but I tried not to think about it and just enjoy the walk while Noe tried to guide us to the bar through that maze.

Las ciudades grandes tienen sus partes lindas pero también tienen sus partes no tan turísticas, y admito que cuando vi que nos estábamos alejando bastante del centro me asusté un poco. Y más aún me asusté cuando empezamos a buscar el bar dentro de un barrio lleno de pequeños pasillos y escaleras. Todo se veía muy pintoresco y bien cuidado, pero a la vez silencioso y casi sin gente. Yo no soy nada valiente frente a la posible inseguridad, pero traté de no pensar en eso y disfrutar el paseo mientras Noe intentaba guiarnos hasta el bar entre todo ese laberinto.

After walking for quite a while and finally accepting that we had gotten lost, Noe and I found a small store that was open and asked if there really was a bar in that area. It was a relief to know there was and to receive clear directions on how to get there. It turned out the bar was located on the terrace of a house, just a few passageways away from where we were at that moment. We both found it strange what kind of bar it would be in such a hard-to-reach place, but it was a pleasant surprise to discover that it did exist and was even more beautiful than we had imagined.

Después de caminar un buen rato y finalmente aceptar que nos habíamos perdido, Noe y yo encontramos un almacén abierto y preguntamos si efectivamente había un bar en esa zona. Nos alivió saber que si y recibir indicaciones precisas sobre cómo llegar a él. Resultó que el bar se encontraba en la terraza de una casa, a unos cuantos pasillos de donde estábamos en ese momento. A las dos nos resultaba raro el tipo de bar que sería en este lugar tan complicado para llegar, pero fue una buena sorpresa descubrir que efectivamente el lugar existía y era más hermoso de lo que pensábamos.

Since we had visited this place during siesta time, it wasn’t open when we arrived, but the owner kindly opened the door for us and let us in. We were surprised by the trust he placed in us, because all the drinks at the bar were available and he simply left us there alone to enjoy the space. Everything looked very new and beautiful, as picturesque as the neighborhood below. It would have been great to see it open and at night, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk through those passageways later on.

Como habíamos visitado este lugar en la hora de la siesta, no estaba abierto para cuando llegamos, pero su dueño amablemente nos abrió la puerta y nos dejó pasar. Nos sorprendió la confianza que nos tuvo, porque todas las bebidas del bar estaban a disposición y él simplemente nos dejó ahí solas disfrutando del espacio. Todo se veía muy nuevo y lindo, pintoresco como el barrio más abajo. Hubiese sido genial verlo abierto y de noche, pero no estaba segura de si quería caminar en esos pasillos más tarde.

Without a doubt, the best part of this bar was the beautiful views of the city. Being a bit elevated already allowed you to see Asunción from above. The afternoon was lovely, and we stayed for quite a while taking photos, as well as charging our phones to continue with the outing. By then, all the adrenaline I had built up on the way there was starting to fade, and I was able to relax after the successful adventure. Deep down, I knew Noe wouldn’t get us into trouble 😂.

Sin dudas, la mejor parte de este bar eran las hermosas vistas de la ciudad. Estar un poco en altura ya te permitía ver Asunción desde lo alto. La tarde estaba hermosa, y nos quedamos un buen rato haciendo una sesión de fotos, además de cargando nuestros celulares para continuar con el paseo. Para entonces, toda la adrenalina que había acumulado en el trayecto de ida ya se estaba disolviendo, y puse relajarme frente al paseo exitoso. En el fondo sabía que Noe no iba a meternos en problemas 😂.

Visiting this bar, called Guaraní Lounge, was a great memory from my stay in Paraguay. I was glad we found it and that we were able to see a bit of Asunción from above. Even though I knew we wouldn’t be doing any trekking in the city, this trip still involved quite a bit of walking and getting a nice view from up high. That’s what I love about less planned trips—the best stories are created along the way ❤️.

Visitar este bar, llamado Guaraní Lounge, fue un buen recuerdo dentro de mi estadía en Paraguay. Me alegré que lo hayamos encontrado y que hayamos podido ver un poco de Asunción desde arriba. Si bien sabía que en la ciudad no haríamos nada de trekking, este viaje tuvo su cuota de caminar bastante y obtener una buena vista desde la altura. Esto es lo que me gusta de los viajes no tan planeados: las mejores anécdotas se van creando sobre la marcha ❤️.
