Paraguay - Beach day in Areguá ruined by the rain, but luckily the food comforted us. / Día de playa en Areguá frustrado por la lluvia, pero por suerte la comida nos consoló. 😃❤️

Out of all the trips I’ve taken, I’ve rarely had bad weather, so I feel like I shouldn’t even complain about it. Even rain can turn into a good story if you’re with the right people, like it did when we visited Areguá in Paraguay. We knew the forecast didn’t have the best news for our day out, but we decided to take the risk anyway. It could have turned out terribly, but in the end it became an afternoon full of laughter and good food 😃.

De todos los viajes que hice, rara vez me acompañó un mal clima, por lo que siento que ni siquiera debería quejarme de esto. Hasta la lluvia puede convertirse en una buena anécdota si estás con las personas correctas, como lo fue cuando visitamos Areguá en Paraguay. Sabíamos que el pronóstico no tenía las mejores noticias para nuestro día de paseo, pero igualmente decidimos correr el riesgo. Podría haber sido todo terrible, pero al final terminó siendo una tarde en la que las risas y la comida no faltaron 😃.

My friend Noe and I had already explored quite a bit around Asunción, so for my last full day in the neighboring country, I wanted to do something more. She suggested we visit Areguá, specifically a beach that the town has. When we checked the forecast and saw it was predicting storms, we felt a bit discouraged, but we still decided to travel the 20 km that separated us from the place—along with an Italian traveler who joined our adventure.

Mi amiga Noe y yo ya habíamos explorado bastante los alrededores de Asunción, por lo que para mi último día completo en el país vecino quería hacer algo más. Ella sugirió que visitemos Areguá, precisamente una playa que esa ciudad tiene. Cuando vimos el pronóstico que anunciaba tormenta, nos desalentamos un poco, pero igual decidimos viajar los 20 km que nos separaban del lugar, y con un viajero italiano que se unió a nuestra aventura.

As I’ve mentioned several times, everything in Paraguay felt quite cheap to us—at least to me, coming from Argentina. We took an Uber to the place, which charged us less than $10 for a ride that lasted a good 30 minutes. In my country, a trip like that could easily cost double or even more. Grateful for the good price, we arrived safely at the beach, although the clouds the forecast had warned about were already hanging over us.

Como dije varias veces, todo en Paraguay nos resultaba bastante barato, al menos a mí con los números argentinos que manejo. Nos tomamos un Uber hasta el lugar, que nos cobró menos de $10 el recorrido que duró unos buenos 30 minutos. En mi país, hacer un viaje de esos podría salirte el doble o incluso más. Agradecidos por el buen precio, llegamos sanos y salvos a la playa, aunque las nubes de las que hablaba el pronóstico ya estaban sobre nosotros.

This “beach” was actually the shore of Lake Ypacaraí, so there was no sand or anything like that—rather, it was a marshy shoreline with grass. The place was nicely set up, with street vendors and plenty of space for recreation. We only got to explore it for a short while before the storm arrived, and with strong winds blowing everything around, it forced us to leave. I think it took us longer to get there than the time we actually spent exploring the place 😂.

Esta "playa" se trataba de la costa del Lago Ypacaraí, por lo que no había arena ni nada de eso, más bien una costa pantanosa con pasto. El lugar estaba bien ambientado, con vendedores ambulantes y bastante espacio para recrearse. Llegamos a recorrer solo un poco este lugar, hasta que la tormenta se hizo presente y con un fuerte viento que volaba todo nos obligó a retirarnos. Creo que tardamos más en llegar que en lo que estuvimos viendo el lugar 😂.

As a plan B, we decided to walk toward the city center, hoping to find something else to do. We saw a few shops open, and on the map we had read about some museums, but unfortunately they weren’t open on Sundays. We wandered around in the rain for a while, until it became too heavy and we were almost forced to stop under the awning of an ice cream shop to take shelter from the water.

Como plan B, decidimos ir caminando hasta el centro de la ciudad, con la esperanza de encontrar algo más que hacer. Vimos algunos negocios abiertos, y en el mapa habíamos leído sobre unos museos, pero lamentablemente no estaban abiertos los domingos. Deambulamos un poco abajo de la lluvia, hasta que esta se volvió demasiado fuerte y casi obligadamente tuvimos que parar en el alero de una heladería a refugiarnos del agua.

A few meters from the ice cream shop, there was still a small store open, which luckily sold hot food. In the end, that was our day in Areguá: the whole afternoon sheltering from the rain, eating, and sharing travel stories with Noe and the Italian traveler. We hadn’t imagined our day would end like this, but at least we didn’t get too wet.

A pocos metros de la heladería, todavía quedaba un pequeño almacen abierto, que para nuestra suerte vendía comida caliente. Finalmente, ese fue nuestro día en Areguá: toda la tarde protegiéndonos de la lluvia, comiendo y compartiendo historias de viaje con Noe y el italiano. No imaginábamos que nuestro día iba a terminar así, pero al menos no nos mojamos tanto.

I have a friend in Buenos Aires who was born in that city (I didn’t know until he saw my Instagram story and told me). When he asked me if I liked the place, well, I didn’t have much to say. I only walked along the beach for about 15 minutes, and spent the rest of the day on the sidewalk of an ice cream shop eating empanadas, drinking tereré, and waiting for the rain to stop so we could call an Uber back to our hostel. Still, this outing was memorable—even with the bad weather. At least I can say that you can survive Areguá in the storm 😅.

En Buenos Aires tengo un amigo que nació en esa ciudad (no lo sabía hasta que vio mi historia en Instagram y me lo contó). Cuando me preguntó si me gustó el lugar, bueno, no tuve mucho que decir. Solo recorrí la playa 15 minutos y el resto del día estuve en la vereda de una heladería comiendo empanadas, tomando tereré y esperando que pare la lluvia para volver a pedir el Uber a nuestro hostel. De todas formas, este paseo fue memorable, incluso con el clima en contra: por lo menos puedo decir que se puede sobrevivir a Areguá con tormenta 😅.
