Argentina - Walking across the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge in Corrientes, with its active and curious suicide prevention measures. / Caminando por el Puente General Manuel Belgrano en Corrientes, con su activa y curiosa prevención suicida. 😶😶

Another interesting highlight during my visit to the city of Corrientes was the walk we took across the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge. This bridge is part of the province’s iconic postcard views and serves to facilitate traffic, but it also offers a great spot for a walk and for enjoying beautiful views of the city. However, not everyone who comes here does so with the same intention of enjoyment, which is why there are “angels” working there—people dedicated to assisting those in crisis.

Otro de los puntos interesantes durante mi visita en la ciudad de Corrientes fue la caminata que hicimos sobre el Puente General Manuel Belgrano. Este puente forma parte de la postal típica de la provincia y sirve para facilitar el tránsito, pero también representa un lugar para ir a hacer una buena caminata y obtener buenas vistas de la ciudad. Pero no toda la gente que llega hasta ahí puede tener el mismo propósito de disfrute, y es por eso que en él trabajan unos "ángeles" que se encargan de socorrer a las personas en crisis.

My time in the city of Corrientes was filled with wonderful outings, discovering great places alongside my personal local guides, Gabi and Luis. Exploring the city with them was very rewarding, as they made sure to show me the most beautiful spots, chosen through the eyes of those who live there every day. On one of our longest days out, we left their house early and were able to visit several parks and the waterfront, with our well-deserved stops for breakfast and lunch to recharge our energy.

Mi paso por la ciudad de Corrientes estuvo llena de grandes paseos, conociendo lugares geniales junto a mis guías locales personales Gabi y Luis. Recorrer con ellos la ciudad fue muy gratificante, ya que se encargaron de mostrarme los lugares más lindos, clasificados a través de quienes viven ahí todos los días. En uno de nuestros días de paseo más largos, salimos temprano de su casa y pudimos recorrer varios parques y la costanera, con nuestras debidas paradas a desayunar y almorzar para recargar energías.

Our last stop of that day was a walk across the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge. This caught me by surprise because I didn’t know you could walk on the bridge—I thought it was only for vehicular traffic. But no, there are sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, and people use it for walking or even for exercising. This bridge connects the capitals of the provinces of Chaco and Corrientes (Resistencia and the city of Corrientes, respectively), with a total length of about 6 km and a height of 100 meters, offering great elevated views.

Nuestra última parada de ese día fue la caminata sobre el Puente General Manuel Belgrano. Esto me tomó por sorpresa porque yo no sabía que se podía caminar sobre el puente, pensé que este solo se limitaba al tránsito vehicular. Pero no, a los costados del puente habían veredas y la gente lo usa para caminar o incluso para hacer deportes. Este puente conecta las capitales de las provincias de Chaco y Corrientes (Resistencia y Corrientes ciudad, respectivamente), con una longitud total de unos 6 km y una altura de 100 metros, desde donde se pueden tener unas buenas vistas desde arriba.

But beyond that, as soon as we got onto the bridge, we were approached by some church members who handed us small papers with Bible passages. At first, I didn’t understand why, but as we continued walking across the bridge, we saw many help signs, phone numbers to call for assistance, and more messages emphasizing the value of life. Apparently, besides being chosen for walks, this bridge sadly also attracts people who are looking to end their lives.

Pero además de eso, ni bien subimos al puente, fuimos abordados por unos chicos de la iglesia quienes nos dieron unos papelitos con pasajes de la Biblia. Al principio no entendía por qué, pero a medida que fuimos caminando por el puente, vimos muchos carteles de ayuda, números de teléfono para llamar a asistencia y más mensajes alertadores sobre el valor de la vida. Aparentemente, este puente además de ser elegido para paseos, tristemente también atrae a las personas que buscan terminar con su vida.

According to the internet, in the last six months there have been more than 80 interventions assisting people who tried to end their lives on this bridge. That figure is very sad, but fortunately there are rescuers and members of the church who provide support to these individuals. Mental health can be very unpredictable at times, which is why it’s important to ask for help when you feel you need it, to avoid reaching such an extreme point.

Según internet, en los últimos 6 meses hubieron más de 80 intervenciones y asistencias con personas que quisieron terminar su vida en este puente. Esa cifra es muy triste, pero por suerte están los socorristas y gente de la iglesia quienes se encargan de dar soporte a estas personas. La salud mental puede ser muy traicionera a veces, por eso importante pedir ayuda cuando uno siente que la necesita, para evitar terminar en un punto tan extremo como este.

Fortunately, the reason for our visit to the bridge was a much happier one: we wanted to go for a walk and enjoy some great views of the city from above. From there, the view of the Paraná River shoreline looked incredible, and the contrast between the golden sands and the greenery of the city was very charming. We didn’t walk the entire length of the bridge, but we made it as far as the pillars that support it. While on the bridge, we came across more church members carrying Argentine flags, who continued handing out Bible messages to raise awareness and offer help in case someone was considering making a fatal decision. I found this to be a very noble cause and something unique that I hadn’t seen anywhere else.

Afortunadamente, el motivo de nuestra visita al puente era por uno más feliz: teníamos ganas de caminar y obtener unas buenas vistas de la ciudad desde arriba. Desde ahí, la vista de la orilla del Río Paraná se veía increíble, y los contrastes de las arenas doradas con lo verde de la ciudad eran muy encantadores. Nosotros no caminamos todo el puente completo, pero logramos llegar hasta donde están los pilares que los sostienen. Sobre el puente nos cruzamos a más chicos de la iglesia con las banderas de Argentina, quienes seguían repartiendo mensajes de la Biblia para concientizar y ayudar en caso de que estés pensando en tomar una decisión fatal. Esto me pareció una causa muy noble y algo único que no había visto en ningún otro lado.

Our visit to the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge lasted until well into the evening, when it was time to head back to Gabi and Luis’s home. That day we walked a lot from very early on, but we left feeling happy knowing we had seen some of the most interesting parts of the city. It was reassuring to know that these “bridge angels” exist, present to assist those who need it, and that there is a support network behind them to provide further help. It was a very satisfying day of sightseeing—a truly well-spent day of travel ❤️.

Nuestra visita al Puente General Manuel Belgrano duró hasta entrado el atardecer, cuando ya era tiempo de volver a casa de Gabi y Luis. Ese día caminamos muchísimo desde muy temprano, pero nos fuimos contentos sabiendo que pudimos ver algunas de las partes más interesantes de la ciudad. Fue bueno saber que existen estos "ángeles del puente", quienes están presentes para asistir a quienes lo necesitan, y que detrás se extiende una red de apoyo para terminar de contenerlos. Fue un día de paseo muy satisfactorio: un verdadero día de viaje bien aprovechado ❤️.
