Argentina - Visiting the Río Hondo Reservoir: a bit of engineering that enhances the landscape of Santiago del Estero. / Visitando el Embalse de Río Hondo: un poco de ingeniería que adorna el paisaje de Santiago del Estero. 😃❤️

Taking the City Tour bus was a great choice to get a quick overview of the beautiful things to see in Termas de Río Hondo. Luckily, after that I still had a whole day to enjoy the city, so my new friend Carina and I agreed to go for a walk. This more relaxed outing gave us the chance to talk more, and almost without realizing it, we had walked the 8 kilometers that separate the city center from the large local reservoir 😃.

Haber tomado el bus del City Tour fue una gran elección para poder tener un pantallazo rápido de las cosas lindas para ver en Termas de Río Hondo. Por suerte, después de eso todavía tenía un día entero para disfrutar de la ciudad, así que mi nueva amiga Carina y yo nos pusimos de acuerdo para salir a caminar un poco. Esta oportunidad de paseo más relajado nos permitió conversar más, y casi sin darnos cuenta, habíamos caminado los 8 kilómetros que separaban el centro de la ciudad del gran embalse local 😃.

The city of Termas de Río Hondo in Santiago del Estero is almost entirely flat, so on this walk I already knew there would be no trekking or views from above. However, the City Tour bus took us to the dam wall of the reservoir, from where some very beautiful views could be enjoyed. To get there, Carina and I walked along a riverside promenade next to the Río Dulce, full of palm trees and areas with tables and chairs to sit and spend the day.

La ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo en Santiago del Estero es plana casi en su totalidad, por lo que en este paseo ya sabía que no iba a haber nada de trekking ni vistas desde arriba. Pero el bus del City Tour nos llevó hasta el paredón del embalse, desde donde podían obtenerse unas vistas muy lindas. Para ir hasta ahí, Carina y yo caminamos por una costanera al costado del Río Dulce, lleno de palmeras y espacios con mesas y sillas para sentarse a pasar el día.

Our first stop was the Tara Inti Natural Reserve, a circular trail around an island right in the middle of the river. This walk took us about an hour, and from there we were able to get a good frontal view of the dam. As is typical of the province of Santiago del Estero, it was extremely hot that day, so we ran out of water in a short time. But right across from the reserve there was a restaurant that served as a supply stop so we wouldn’t get dehydrated along the way.

Nuestra primera parada fue en la Reserva Natural Tara Inti, un recorrido circular por una isla justo en medio del río. Este paseo nos tomó una hora, y desde ahí pudimos tener una buena vista frontal del dique. Como es típico de la provincia de Santiago del Estero, ese día hacía muchísimo calor, por lo que en poco tiempo nos quedamos sin agua. Pero justo enfrente de la reserva había un restaurante que nos sirvió como proveeduría para no deshidratarnos en el camino.

By the time we finally reached the dam, the sun was already slowly setting. This made the landscape gradually take on a golden hue. Getting closer to the dam wall meant becoming aware of the true magnitude of the structure. On this wall, you could see a stream of water coming from the large reservoir on the other side, bursting out with such pressure that it would surely be fatal for anyone who got too close. Despite this, there were many people along the shore, fishing and cooling off in the splashing water.

Para cuando finalmente llegamos hasta el dique, el sol ya estaba bajando lentamente. Esto hizo que el paisaje estuviera tiñiéndose de dorado de a poco. Acercarse al paredón del dique fue tomar consciencia de la verdadera magnitud de la obra. En este paredón se veía un chorro de agua proveniente del gran embalse del otro lado, saliendo con una presión tal que seguramente sería fatal para cualquiera que se acercara. A pesar de esto, había mucha gente en la orilla, pescando y refrescandose con el agua que salpicaba.

Next to the dam there was a staircase that allowed access to the road running over the top. With how tired Carina and I were, this staircase seemed endless, but having the view from up there again would be completely worth it, so we did it. Apparently, this spot was quite touristy, and since the buses passing by were required to slow down, there were stalls with people selling food. You could also see the large electrical facilities that harness the force of the water coming out of the dam wall.

Al costado del dique había una escalera que te permitía acceder a la ruta que pasaba por arriba. Con el cansancio que teníamos Carina y yo, esta escalera parecía interminable, pero volver a tener la vista desde ahí arriba valdría completamente la pena así que lo hicimos. Aparentemente, este punto era bastante turístico y como los buses que pasaban por ahí estaban obligados a bajar la velocidad, había puestos de gente vendiendo comida. También se podían ver las grandes instalaciones eléctricas que aprovechan la fuera del agua que sale del paredón.

The warm light of the sunset painted the horizon a beautiful color, and from there you could see the large lake formed by the Río Dulce reservoir. According to the internet, this structure is used to contain the river’s floods and to supply water to the city. From there you could also see how flat this area is, so I was grateful that at least this elevation existed to offer a slightly more panoramic view. Very beautiful ❤️.

La cálida luz del atardecer pintaban el horizonte de un color hermoso, y desde ahí se podía ver el gran lago que formaba en embalse del Río Dulce. Según internet, esta construcción sirve para contener las crecidas del río y para abastecer de agua a la ciudad. Desde ahí también se podía ver lo plana que es esta área, así que agradecí que al menos existiera esta elevación para poder tener una vista un poco más panorámica. Muy hermoso ❤️.

Choosing this day to explore the reservoir a bit more closely turned out to be a great walking plan, in which we ended up covering 16 kilometers. Discovering the surroundings of the city of Termas de Río Hondo with a new friend was a very pleasant experience, which encouraged me to continue my journey with joy and looking forward to new anecdotes in the following days. The province of Santiago del Estero was number 20 on my list of visiting all the provinces of Argentina, and having made this outing there was incredible. I’d say this walk was short but concise: I loved everything I saw ❤️.

Elegir este día para ir a explorar el embalse un poco más de cerca fue una muy buena idea de caminata, en la que finalmente terminamos recorriendo 16 kilómetros. Descubrir los alrededores de la ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo con una nueva amiga fue una experiencia muy grata, que me impulsó a continuar mi viaje con alegría y esperando tener nuevas anécdotas en los siguientes días. La provincia de Santiago del Estero fue la #20 en mi lista recorriendo todas las provincias de Argentina, y haber materializado el paseo en ella fue increíble. Diría que este paseo fue corto pero conciso: me encantó todo lo que vi ❤️.
