Argentina - Visiting Oca Lagoon at sunset: beautiful snapshots of a beach not suitable for swimmers. / Visitando la Laguna Oca al atardecer: hermosas postales de una playa no apta para bañistas. 😃❤️

When someone thinks about the nature of Formosa province, one of the landscapes that first comes to mind is the famous Bañado La Estrella. This place is a beautiful wetland with palm trees and local wildlife, where you can take boat rides and go on walks to explore it more deeply. I wish I could have visited it, but my budget and travel time back then didn’t allow me to travel 400 km to see it, much less afford the hundreds of dollars that an excursion there cost. Instead, I had to settle for a more modest outing, which I could easily reach in 10 minutes by moto taxi 😂.

Cuando alguien piensa en la naturaleza de la provincia de Formosa, uno de los paisajes que primero se le viene a la mente es el del famoso Bañado La Estrella. Este lugar es un hermoso humedal con palmeras y fauna local, en el que se pueden hacer paseos acuáticos y caminatas para conocerlo un poco más en profundidad. Ojalá hubiese podido visitarlo, pero mi presupuesto y tiempo de viaje de ese entonces no me permitían viajar 400 km para verlo, ni mucho menos afrontar los cientos de dólares que salía una excursión hasta ahí. En su lugar, tuve que conformarme con un paseo un poco más humilde, al que fácilmente pude llegar en 10 minutos de moto taxi 😂.

I knew that on my limited trip visiting the provinces I still had left to see, I wouldn’t have enough time to travel far from the capital cities. This forced me to look for interesting places to visit nearby. Luckily for me, besides the city, every province I visited had some nature to explore, and in the case of Formosa, that was no exception.

Yo sabía que en mi acotado viaje conociendo las provincias que me faltaban, no iba a tener tiempo como para alejarme mucho de las capitales. Esto me obligó a tener que buscar que lugares interesantes había para ver en los alrededores. Para mi suerte, además de la ciudad, cada provincia que visité tenía un poco de naturaleza para conocer, y en el caso de Formosa eso no fue la excepción.

I had asked at the local tourism office what else I could do, besides walking along the waterfront (which, by the way, was also beautiful). They told me I could visit Laguna Oca, which was only about a 10-minute drive from there, and that the best time to go was at sunset. At that point, I had discovered how cheap the Uber Moto (motorbike taxi) service was, so I took one that, for less than $1, got me there.

Había preguntado en la oficina de turismo local qué más podía hacer, aparte de recorrer la costanera (que por cierto, también era hermosa). Ellos me dijeron que podía visitar la Laguna Oca, que se encontraba a solo 10 minutos en auto desde ahí, y que el mejor horario para hacerlo era al atardecer. En ese momento yo había descubierto lo barato que era el servicio de Uber Moto (moto taxi), así que me tomé uno que por menos de $1 me acercó hasta allá.

When I arrived, I found a beautiful lagoon with the sun already setting, painting the sky with colors and creating stunning reflections on the water. Despite the beauty of the landscape, there were several signs along the shoreline advising against swimming there. According to what I read online, it’s because the water is deep and there are carnivorous aquatic animals. The Uber Moto driver mentioned piranhas, but I didn’t want to find out for myself.

Cuando llegué me encontré con una hermosa laguna y con un sol ya bajando, pintando de colores el cielo y formando hermosos reflejos en el agua. A pesar de lo lindo del paisaje, a lo largo de la costa de la laguna habían varios carteles que aconsejaban no bañarse ahí. Según lo que leí en internet, es porque el agua es profunda, y porque hay animales acuáticos carnivoros. El chofer de Uber Moto mencionó pirañas, pero no quise comprobarlo.

It felt a bit unfortunate that, despite the intense heat in Formosa, nature had provided a lagoon that wasn’t suitable for swimming or cooling off. Even so, the scenery was still beautiful, despite the large number of mosquitoes there. I was glad I had brought my insect repellent with me—I think I used it more in that province than during the rest of my entire trip around Argentina 😂.

Me parecía un poco lamentable que haciendo tanto calor en Formosa, la naturaleza haya puesto una laguna no apta para bañarse ni refrescarse. Sin embargo, el paisaje igual seguía siendo listo, a pesar de la cantidad de mosquitos que también habían ahí. Me alegré de haber llevado conmigo mi repelente de insectos: creo que lo usé más en esa provincia que en todo mi viaje entero por Argentina 😂.

Traveling alone, I sometimes hesitate about whether to go to certain places I don’t know, but this one seemed friendly and there were still some people around when I arrived. The lagoon was close but a bit removed from the urban area, so we passed through some fields to get there. The driver was kind and even took a photo of me with the Formosa sign, but I forgot to ask for his number to contact him for the return trip. That could have gone a bit wrong, because later I realized I had no signal at the lagoon...

Viajando sola a veces dudo de si ir a ciertos lugares que no conozco, pero este parecía amigable y todavía quedaba algo de gente para cuando llegué. Esta laguna quedaba cerca pero un poco retirada de la zona urbana, así que pasamos por unos campos hasta llegar a ella. El chofer fue amable y hasta me sacó una foto con el cartel de las letras de Formosa, pero olvidé pedir su número para contactarlo de regreso. Eso podría haber salido un poco mal, porque después vi que en la laguna no tenía señal...

As the sun quickly went down and the scenery became even more beautiful, people started to leave. Looking around, I noticed that there was almost no lighting at the lagoon for the night. On top of that, I had no signal on my phone to request an Uber Moto, which made me a bit scared about the possibility of being stranded there. But since your friend lauramica always has good luck (or maybe I just look a bit pitiful being alone), some girls who were leaving asked me how I was going to get back. When I told them I was trying to request an Uber without success due to the lack of signal, they shared their Wi-Fi with me so I could place my request. Guys, this truly saved me—otherwise, I think I’d still be at the lagoon 😅.

Mientras el sol bajaba rápidamente y el paisaje se hacía más hermoso, la gente se iba yendo: mirando un poco alrededor, vi que en esta laguna casi no había iluminación para la noche. Sumado a eso, no tenía señal en el celular para pedir un Uber Moto, por lo que me asustó un poco el hecho de quedarme ahí varada. Pero como su amiga lauramica siempre tiene suerte (o doy un poco de lástima por estar sola), unas chicas que se estaban yendo me preguntaron como me iba a volver yo. Cuando les dije que estaba intentando pedir Uber sin éxito por la señal, ellas me compartieron su wifi para que pudiera hacer mi pedido. Amigos, esto realmente me salvó, sino creo que todavía estaría en la laguna 😅.

By the time the Uber Moto arrived, the sun had almost completely set. All those fields we had passed on the way there were now dark walls in the middle of nowhere. I stayed calm until we reached the city, and I felt relieved to be back in a place with lights and more activity. My visit to Laguna Oca was interesting and gave me some beautiful, colorful snapshots, although it also left me with a lesson: to always check the signal in any remote place I go to. Just as I make sure I can get there, I also need to make sure I can get back 😅.

Para cuando llegó el Uber Moto, el sol ya casi se había ido por completo. Todos esos campos que habíamos pasado a la ida, ahora eran oscuros paredones en el medio de la nada. Mantuve la calma hasta que llegamos a la ciudad, y respiré aliviada por volver a estar un lugar iluminado y con más movimiento. Mi paseo a la Laguna Oca fue interesante y me regaló unas lindas postales coloreadas, aunque me dejó la lección de verificar la señal en cada lugar lejos al que voy: así como me aseguro la ida, tengo que hacerlo con la vuelta 😅.
