STONE AND CENTURIES OF HISTORY

Today I’m going back in my memories to my holiday in CYPRUS last year. As you probably already know from my previous posts, one day we took a trip by a bus provided by the hotel to a nearby town called FAMAGUSTA. The weather that day was a bit too good — definitely perfect for sunbathing but a bit less ideal for sightseeing. Walking in such weather, especially at midday, was really exhausting but I think we managed to see all the landmarks in FAMAGUSTA or at least those located in the city center. And today I would like to show you the cathedral or rather the ruins of the LALA MUSTAFA PASHA MOSQUE, formerly also known as the CATHEDRAL OF SAINT NICHOLAS.

Dzisiaj wracam wspomnieniami do mojego zeszłorocznego urlopu na Cyprze. Jak już zapewne wiecie z moich poprzednich postów, jednego dnia zrobiliśmy sobie wycieczkę autobusem podstawionym przez hotel do pobliskiego miasteczka o nazwie Famagusta. Pogoda tego dnia była aż za bardzo dobra, to znaczy z pewnością idealną była do plażowania, do zwiedzania już trochę mniej. Spacer w taką pogodę i to w samo południe był naprawdę bardzo męczący. Niemniej jednak myślę, że udało nam się zobaczyć wszystkie zabytki w Famaguście a przynajmniej te, które były zlokalizowane w centrum. I dzisiaj chciałabym wam pokazać katedrę a tak właściwie ruiny katedry LALA MUSTAFA PASHA MOSQUE, dawniej zwaną również KATEDRĄ ŚWIĘTEGO MIKOŁAJA.

The cathedral dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It was built by the European dynasty ruling Cyprus — the LUSIGNANS. At that time it was one of the most important and largest places on the island. It was here that the kings of Cyprus were crowned. After the conquest by the Ottoman Empire it changed its function and was converted into a mosque.

Katedra pochodzi z przełomu XIII i XIV wieku. Została zbudowana przez europejską dynastię rządzącą Cyprem — LUZYNIANÓW. W tamtym czasie było to jedno z najważniejszych i największych miejsc na wyspie. To właśnie tutaj koronowano królów Cypru. Po podboju przez Imperium Osmańskie zmieniła swoją funkcję i została przekształcona w meczet.

I must admit that its architecture completely surprised me. It is a typical French Gothic style. Cathedrals in France look very similar. Pointed arches, a richly decorated façade, and rose windows are typical features of French architecture. It feels a bit strange, because it looks like Western Europe, yet we are in Cyprus.

Muszę przyznać, że jej architektura totalnie mnie zaskoczyła. Jest to bowiem typowy gotyk francuski. Bardzo podobnie wyglądają katedry we Francji. Strzeliste łuki, bogato zdobiona fasada, rozety to typowe cechy architektury francuskiej. Trochę dziwne uczucie, bo wygląda jak Europa Zachodnia, a znajdujemy się na Cyprze.

It is in the details that we can best see the passage of time. The stones, the decorations, the structure — everything here bears the marks of history. Some elements are already worn, as can be seen in the photos, while others are still very clear. Looking at all these ornaments and the precision of craftsmanship you can imagine how much work was put into the construction of this cathedral.

To właśnie w detalach widzimy najlepiej upływ czasu. Kamienie, zdobienia, struktura – wszystko tutaj nosi ślady historii. Niektóre elementy są już starte, co widać na zdjęciach, inne nadal bardzo wyraźne. Patrząc również na te wszystkie zdobienia i precyzję wykonania można sobie wyobrazić, ile pracy włożono w budowę tej katedry.

Due to its monumental size the cathedral is visible from many places, which is why I managed to photograph it from almost every side. Interestingly the cathedral survived the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire. It was not destroyed at that time, but only converted into a mosque. A minaret was added and all Christian elements, such as altars, sculptures and paintings were removed. What the cathedral looks like today is the result of natural degradation. The greatest damage is simply the effect of the passage of time, lack of maintenance and of course weather conditions.

Ze względu na swoją monumentalność katedra jest widoczna z bardzo wielu miejsc, dlatego też udało mi się ją sfotografować chyba z każdej jej strony. Co ciekawe, katedra przetrwała podbój Cypru przez Imperium Osmańskie. Nie została wtedy zniszczona a jedynie przekształcona w meczet. Dodano minaret i usunięto wszystkie elementy chrześcijańskie takie jak ołtarze, rzeźby i obrazy. To, jak katedra wygląda dzisiaj, jest efektem naturalnej degradacji. Największe zniszczenia to po prostu efekt upływu czasu, braku konserwacji oraz oczywiście warunków atmosferycznych.

Today this building still functions as a mosque and is one of the most important landmarks in Famagusta. It is no surprise that it attracts tourists from all over the world. It also made a strong impression on me, especially when I learned more about the history of this cathedral. This is not an ordinary place; it is a place that combines two histories — Christian and Islamic. It is an example of how architecture can survive a change of religion and culture. It is a place that is still alive and although its function has changed over the years, it has not lost its significance.

Dzisiaj budynek ten nadal funkcjonuje jako meczet i jest jednym z najważniejszych zabytków w Famaguście. Nic więc dziwnego, że przyciąga turystów z całego świata. Również na mnie wywarł bardzo duże wrażenie, szczególnie gdy zagłębiłam się trochę w historię tej katedry. To nie jest zwykłe miejsce. Jest to miejsce, które łączy w sobie dwie historie chrześcijańską i islamską. Jest przykładem tego, jak architektura może przetrwać zmianę religii i kultury. Jest to miejsce, które nadal żyje i choć zmieniło swoją funkcję na przestrzeni lat, to nie straciło znaczenia.
