HEIDELBERG FROM THE RIVERSIDE

I would like to invite you today for a walk along the Neckar River in Heidelberg. When it comes to the city itself, I didn’t walk much through its streets, mainly because I didn’t have enough time and, above all, enough energy. I focused on two things at that time: walking along the famous street Schlangenweg to see Heidelberg from a beautiful viewpoint above and then visiting the castle. Panoramic views of Heidelberg as well as photos of the castle will appear in other posts and today I would like to show you Heidelberg as seen from the riverside.

Zapraszam dzisiaj na wycieczkę wzdłuż rzeki Neckar w Heidelbergu. Jeśli chodzi o samo miasto Heidelberg, to nie chodziłam dużo po jego uliczkach z tego względu, że zabrakło na to zarówno czasu, jak i też przede wszystkim sił. Skupiłam się wtedy na dwóch rzeczach, mianowicie spacer słynną uliczką Schlangenweg, aby zobaczyć miasto Heidelberg z przepięknym widokiem z góry, a następnie udałam się zwiedzać zamek. Zdjęcia panoramiczne Heidelbergu, jak i zdjęcia zamku pojawią się w innych postach, a dzisiaj chciałabym pokazać Wam Heidelberg widziany znad rzeki.

We are starting from a slightly different side of Heidelberg than the one most commonly seen on postcards. There is no crowded Old Town here, but rather a quieter and more intimate part of the city on the other side of the river.

Here you can see how diverse the landscape of Heidelberg really is. Elegant villas stand next to older townhouses and more modern homes, all beautifully set against the green slopes of the hills. I really liked this combination of nature and architecture.
While walking along the river, I had the feeling that this part of the city lives a bit slower. Fewer tourists, less noise, and more space to calmly enjoy the beautiful views.

Zaczynamy od trochę innej strony Heidelbergu, aniżeli tą, którą najbardziej znamy z pocztówek. Nie mamy tutaj zatłoczonego Starego Miasta, mamy tutaj raczej spokojniejszą, bardziej kameralną część po drugiej stronie rzeki.

Możemy tutaj zobaczyć, jak zróżnicowany jest krajobraz Heidelbergu. Mamy koło siebie eleganckie wille, starsze kamienice i bardziej nowoczesne domy, a wszystko to pięknie komponuje się w zielone zbocza wzgórz. Bardzo podobało mi się to połączenie natury i zabudowy.
Gdy spacerowałam wzdłuż rzeki, miałam wrażenie, że ta część miasta żyje jakby trochę wolniej. Mniej turystów, mniej hałasu, a więcej przestrzeni do spokojnego podziwiania pięknych widoków.

Heidelberg has always been closely connected with water and transport. The river still plays an important role in communication and trade. You can see different kinds of vessels on it, from transport barges to tourist boats. Life here basically revolves around the river.
In moments like this, you can clearly see what everyday life looks like here. Heidelberg is not only a tourist destination, but also a normal, living space where daily life of the residents takes place.

Heidelberg od zawsze było bardzo związane z wodą i transportem. Rzeka do dziś pełni ważną rolę komunikacyjną i handlową. Można zobaczyć na niej różnego rodzaju jednostki, od barek transportowych po statki turystyczne. Życie toczy się tak właściwie wokół tej rzeki. W takich momentach bardzo dobrze widać, jak wygląda tutaj życie na co dzień. Heidelberg nie tylko jako atrakcja turystyczna, ale również jako normalna, żyjąca przestrzeń, w której toczy się codzienne życie mieszkańców.

The following photos show just how deeply Heidelberg is embedded in its landscape. The city blends beautifully with nature. The buildings transition smoothly into the forested hills, while the river forms a natural axis around which everything is arranged.
History and modernity coexist here in a very natural way, complementing each other. The hills are not just a backdrop – they create the atmosphere of this place.
Personally, I really liked this view. The hills looked truly stunning against the dense urban fabric of Heidelberg.

Kolejne zdjęcia pokazują nam, jak bardzo Heidelberg jest wpisany w krajobraz. Miasto pięknie łączy się z naturą. Zabudowa płynnie przechodzi w zalesione wzgórza, a rzeka stanowi naturalną oś.
Historia, jak i współczesność koreluje ze sobą w naturalny sposób, uzupełniając siebie nawzajem. Wzgórza są nie tylko tłem, one tworzą tutaj klimat tego miejsca.
Osobiście bardzo podobał mi się ten widok. Naprawdę pięknie wyglądały te wzgórza na tle zwartej zabudowy Heidelbergu.

My photos couldn’t possibly be complete without the Old Bridge in Heidelberg, the Karl Theodor Bridge. Alongside the castle, it is one of the most iconic symbols of the city.
It was built in the 18th century and still impresses both tourists and locals with its stone construction and the way it harmoniously fits into the surrounding landscape. The bridge connects the Old Town with the district on the other side of the Neckar.

An interesting fact is that the current structure is not the first one in this location. Earlier bridges were repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars.

Na moich zdjęciach nie może zabraknąć oczywiście Starego Mostu w Heidelbergu, czyli Karl Theodor Brücke. Jest to bowiem, oprócz zamku, jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych symboli tego miasta.
Zbudowano go w XVIII wieku i do dziś zachwyca turystów i mieszkańców swoją kamienną konstrukcją oraz harmonijnym wpisaniem w otaczający krajobraz. Most pełni funkcję łączącą stare miasto z dzielnicą po drugiej stronie Neckaru.

Ciekawostką jest, iż obecna konstrukcja nie jest pierwszą w tym miejscu. Wcześniejsze bowiem mosty były wielokrotnie niszczone przez powodzie i wojny.

The most distinctive feature of the bridge is its towers. In the past, they served a defensive function, and today they have become one of the most popular photographic motifs in Heidelberg.

Walking across the bridge, we can admire both the hills surrounding the Neckar valley and the beautiful panorama of the city. It is a place that wonderfully combines history, architecture, and the everyday life of the city.

Najbardziej charakterystyczną cechą mostu są jego wieże. Kiedyś pełniły one funkcję obronną, a dziś stają się jednym z najbardziej popularnych motywów fotograficznym w Heidelbergu.

Spacerując po moście, możemy podziwiać zarówno wzgórza otaczające dolinę Neckaru, jak i przepiękną panoramę miasta. To miejsce w cudowny sposób łączy historię, architekturę i codzienne życie miasta.
