English Version

The Castle of Santo Domingo de Atarés is not only a fortress that has survived the passage of centuries, nor the place that has remained for so many years in silence on a hill, observing the immensity of the horizon in front of the bay of Havana, being witness to all the ships that have dropped their anchors to the bottom of the sea, from the oldest and heaviest galleons to the most modern ones. Currently it is also a magnificent museum.

It was opened to the public a few years ago, after having been restored and when the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city was being celebrated. In some of its halls a very original collection is exhibited dedicated to the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. Coinciding with the anniversary of the city, the half millennium of the death of the Italian genius was also remembered, which gave rise to this very special exhibition.

The castle is located in Centro Habana and, in addition to the heritage pieces it keeps inside, it offers a tour through the less artistic and more engineering facet of Leonardo, who was a man that put his intellect not only at the service of the arts, but also of science, designing solutions that were ahead of his time.

In these halls we can see some scale models of his inventions, many of which were never built. Among them stand out the contraption for flight, devices to transport water, artillery and siege weapons, a diving suit, a horizontal drill, machines to lift heavy objects, excavators, and even a small cubicle full of mirrors that seem to reflect and multiply inside one another.

All this is accompanied by reproductions of his most famous paintings, the Gioconda, The Adoration of the Magi, The Lady with an Ermine, among others. Next to each work an informative note is included that allows us to appreciate in detail his creativity and that personal stamp that turned his paintings into universal references, marking a unique style in his time.

These halls dedicated to his inventions and his art teach us that the imagination of man has no limits and that the beauty of art is renewed and transcends in time, that the ideas and works of great creators survive their own life, because the mind that cannot be enclosed within the borders of society and of time manages to leave eternal traces.

I really liked getting to know this small space inside the fortress, a place that combines history and creativity for those who wish to discover them.

I wonder if this isn't just a tourist ploy; are the models functional or just static reproductions for photo ops?

Hello, how are you, I wouldn’t be able to tell you, I didn’t ask that question, but some are small models, to scale, I imagine they are only meant to give us a visual idea of how they would be in reality, I don’t think they work.
