Hotel Plaza, History and Charm [EN/ES]

Cover.jpg

English Version

Havana has the category of Wonder City, and when we visit the old city we understand the reason for that title. We “marvel” at its architecture, its emblematic buildings, we are dazzled by the Capitol with its golden dome, and buildings like the Gran Teatro, with its imposing façade. Although for me, as that well-known book says, what is essential is invisible to the eyes, and what dazzles me most about this old city is precisely the history hidden in its wonders, in its colonial buildings and in each one of its most endearing corners.

In this publication I want to show a place that captivated me not only for its charm, but also for its history. This is the Hotel Plaza, one of the oldest built in Havana and one of the most elegant, which preserves the classic and refined style of more than a century ago, with its peculiar triangular construction, the arcades in its design and its large windows, which make this a place full of personality.

It is located in one of the best-known areas, in the Historic Center of Old Havana, very close to historical and cultural sites that are icons of the capital such as the Gran Teatro de La Habana, the Capitol, Central Park and the Floridita Bar.

Its main door is decorated with large engraved crystals and at the top it has a golden shield with the initials of the hotel. Upon entering we find a large hall with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The floor is old, of mosaics, from which several columns rise adorning its central space and extending up to the ceiling from which beautiful lamps hang. In the corners different ornamental plants maintain the freshness and harmony of the place. In one of its halls there is a small fountain that gives a touch of sobriety and sophistication, and also a beautiful decoration in stained glass that provides color and light creating an ideal atmosphere for rest.

But it is not only its beauty that surprises, as I said at the beginning, but also its more than 100 years of history and the personalities who have stayed at the Plaza, an essential part of its fame. It is said that the famous ballerina Ana Pavlova as well as the renowned dancer Isadora Duncan, two jewels of world art, stayed here. Also the great Cuban chess master José Raúl Capablanca played his first tournament here. Even the most famous physicist in the world, Albert Einstein, who visited Cuba to receive a tribute from the Academy of Sciences, stayed at this hotel.

Renowned figures from different fields have visited the Plaza, which makes the history of the place so fascinating. At the beginning of the last century, the peculiar baseball player Babe Ruth stayed when he visited Cuba to participate in a series of games that sought to promote that sport on the island. It is also said that at dawn on January 1st, when President Batista left Cuba, the head of the American mafia Meyer Lansky was dining in its facilities with his lover, and right there he received the news.

The Hotel Plaza is not only an elegant and old building, it is a silent witness to the history of Cuba. Its elegant halls keep the memory of artists, scientists, athletes and figures who marked eras. Visiting it is to walk through a century of living memories, perhaps that is why each visit to the Plaza is much more than an encounter with beauty, it is a journey through the history of the city.
