Central Railway Station [EN/ES]

There is a building that always draws attention when we pass in front of it, even when we see it from afar it is impossible not to stop our gaze on its peculiar towers and on the great clock that is located on its front part, right between both. It is the Central Railway Station, inaugurated in the first decade of the past century as a symbol of the development and expansion of the city of Havana.
The station is located where Arsenal and Egido streets meet, on the grounds where the old Military Arsenal once stood, a place where large ships were built. Navigation was the force that drove Cuba, its commerce and its economy, and that is why this site always had great importance. Very close there is also a fragment of the stone wall that surrounded the city. Today only small remains are preserved of that grand construction that protected Havana for centuries, and one of the most visible is precisely near the Central Station.
The main building is distinguished by its sobriety and monumentality. Its two twin towers crowned with shields and windows give it a majestic air. Inside, the wide halls were designed to receive thousands of travelers every day, becoming a point of connection between the different provinces of the country.
The station is also surrounded by history, with old buildings that carry on their walls the weight of the years. Very close to the place, visible from the street where its main entrance is located, you can see the façade of the House Museum where Cuba’s National Hero José Martí was born and lived his childhood and youth. This site loaded with memory and meaning adds even more cultural and historical value to the surroundings of the station.
For decades the station was witness to the constant movement of trains and passengers. There moments of great social dynamism were lived, for it was not only a place of transit, but also a space where cultures and customs from all over Cuba were mixed. In front of it there is a small park where pieces of old wagons and locomotives are preserved, like an open-air museum that shows us the first passenger vehicles that traveled along these tracks.
Currently the building remains closed due to restoration works that seek to return to it the splendor of its first years. Declared a National Monument, the Station continues to be an architectural and patrimonial reference, a symbol of the railway history of the island and of its evolution through time.
Walking around its surroundings is to go through another chapter of the history of Old Havana, with its countless legacy, which deserves to be preserved for future generations.

Hay una edificación que llama siempre la atención cuando pasamos frente a ella, iincluso cuando la vemos en la lejanía es imposible no detener nuestra vista en sus peculiares torres y en el gran reloj que se encuentra en su parte frontal, justo entre ambas. Se trata de la Estación Central de Ferrocarriles, inaugurada en la primera década del pasado siglo como símbolo del desarrollo y la expansión de la ciudad de La Habana.
La estación se encuentra donde coinciden las calles Arsenal y Egido, en los terrenos donde antes estuvo el antiguo Arsenal Militar, lugar donde se construían grandes barcos. La navegación fue la fuerza que impulsó a Cuba, su comercio y su economía y por eso este sitio tuvo siempre gran importancia. Muy próxima se encuentra también un fragmento de la muralla de piedra que cercaba la ciudad. Hoy solo se conservan pequeños restos de aquella grandiosa construcción que protegió a La Habana durante siglos, y uno de los más visibles está precisamente cerca de la Estación Central.
El edificio principal se distingue por su sobriedad y monumentalidad. Sus dos torres gemelas coronadas por escudos y ventanales, le confieren un aire majestuoso. En su interior los amplios salones fueron diseñados para recibir a miles de viajeros cada día, convirtiéndose en un punto de conexion entre las diferentes provincias del país.
La estación además está rodeada de historia, con edificios antiguos que llevan en sus paredes el peso de los años. Muy cerca del lugar, visible desde la calle donde se encuentra su entrada principal, se puede ver la fachada de la Casa Museo donde nació y vivió su infancia y juventud el Héroe Nacional de Cuba José Martí. Este sitio cargado de memoria y significado añade aún más valor cultural e histórico al entorno de la estación.
Durante décadas la estación fue testigo del movimiento constante de trenes y pasajeros. Allí se vivieron momentos de gran dinamismo social, pues no solo era un lugar de tránsito, sino también un espacio donde se mezclaban culturas y costumbres de toda Cuba. Frente a ella hay un pequeño parque donde se conservan piezas de antiguos vagones y locomotoras, como un museo al aire libre que nos muestra los primeros vehículos de pasajeros que transitaron por estas vías.
Actualmente el edificio permanece cerrado por trabajos de restauración que buscan devolverle el esplendor de sus primeros años. Declarada Monumento Nacional, la Estación sigue siendo un referente arquitectónico y patrimonial, un símbolo de la historia ferroviaria de la isla y de su evolución a través del tiempo.
Pasear por los alrededores es recorrer otro capítulo de la historia de La Habana Vieja, con su incontable legado, el que merece ser preservado para las futuras generaciones.

Yes, we have a rail train system, and that's the type of train used in the country. We still need to modernize a bit. 😁
