Castel of Atarés, discovering the history of Havana [EN/ES]

Very close to the Bay of Havana, on an elevation from which the entire surrounding landscape can be dominated, rises the Fortress Castillo de Atarés, which in its beginnings had a military character for the defensive use of the city, and which at present functions as a magnificent museum.
This fortress, like others built around the port of the city after Havana was assaulted and invaded by the English in the 18th century, is preserved today as a notable example architecture of the colonial period. Although it is not one of the best known for being located farther from the rest of the fortifications, and has always been the least visited, it is an admirable place full of history.
Throughout the centuries this fortress was destined for different purposes; in it were established both the Spanish army and the North American one, it served as a prison, and at some point the Cuban national police was also located there. A few years ago the construction was rehabilitated in its entirety and adapted as a museum in which we can learn about the history and evolution of the city, as well as understand how a colonial fortress functioned.
The Castillo de Atarés is surrounded by a moat. Inside, after crossing a small wooden drawbridge that gives access, one arrives at a parade ground surrounded by several constructions and rooms that served for the lodging of the troops and the storage of provisions and armaments. From its rooftop, where placed, one can contemplate the entire expanse of the sea, since it is located at one of the highest points of the area. This location was also a defensive advantage because its direct access was very difficult.
After the Office of the Historian of Havana restored it, due to the deterioration in which it was found, caused by the passage of the years and the lack of maintenance, the castle was opened to the public as a museum. Today it is a space where, in addition to interacting with the living history of the capital, we can learn the details of its construction and the different stages that marked its passage through time.
To tour the Castillo de Atarés is to discover an important part of the history of Cuba; it is a space that connects us with our historical past, and a place from which the greatness of Havana is revealed to us in all its dimension.

Muy cercano a la Bahía de La Habana, en una elevación desde la que se domina todo el paisaje de los alrededores, se levanta la Fortaleza Castillo de Atarés, la cual en sus inicios tuvo un carácter militar para el uso defensivo de la ciudad, y que en la actualidad funciona como un magnífico museo.
Esta fortaleza, al igual que otras construidas alrededor del puerto de la ciudad después de que La Habana fuera asaltada e invadida por los ingleses en el siglo XVIII, se conserva hoy como un ejemplo notable de la arquitectura militar del periodo colonial. Aunque no es de las más conocidas por encontrarse más alejada del resto de las fortificaciones, y ha sido siempre la menos visitada, es un lugar admirable y cargado de historia.
A lo largo de los siglos esta fortaleza estuvo destinada a diferentes fines, en ella se establecieron tanto el ejército español como el norteamericano, hizo función de cárcel, y en algún momento también estuvo ubicada la policía nacional cubana. Hace pocos años la construcción fue rehabilitada en su totalidad y adecuada como museo en el que podemos conocer la historia y la evolución de la ciudad, así como aprender cómo era el funcionamiento de una fortaleza colonial.
El Castillo de Atarés está rodeado por un foso. En su interior, después de atravesar un pequeño puente levadizo de madera que da acceso, se llega a una plaza de armas rodeada por varias construcciones y habitaciones que servían para el alojamiento de las tropas y el almacenamiento de provisiones y armamentos. Desde su azotea donde se emplazaban los cañones, se puede contemplar toda la extensión del mar, ya que se encuentra en uno de los puntos más altos de la zona. Esta ubicación era también una ventaja defensiva pues su acceso directo resultaba muy difícil.
Después de que la Oficina del Historiador de La Habana la restaurara, debido al deterioro en que se encontraba, ocasionado por el paso de los años y la falta de mantenimiento, el castillo fue abierto al público como museo. Hoy es un espacio donde además de interactuar con la historia viva de la capital, podemos conocer los detalles de su construcción y las diferentes etapas que marcaron su paso en el tiempo.
Recorrer el Castillo de Atarés es descubrir una parte importante de la historia de Cuba, es un espacio que nos conecta con nuestro pasado histórico, y un lugar desde el cual la grandeza de La Habana se nos revela en toda su dimensión.
