A serene walk through the city [EN/ES]

cover.jpg

English Version

Fifth Avenue, in the Playa municipality of Havana, is one of the busiest in the city. It is one of the main arteries that links Playa with Vedado and covers several districts of the capital. It is very close to the sea, so much so that from some sections you can see the blue horizon that accompanies it.

It is an avenue designed for vehicles to travel quickly and directly, so in just a few minutes we can cross it towards the city center. For this reason, parking areas are prohibited directly on it and cars cannot stop here (except at traffic lights). Even so, we can enjoy the beautiful view of the surroundings, especially the vegetation that adorns it, different trees, royal palms, and pretty gardens planted along the sidewalk that runs beside it. For pedestrians there is a wide divider that separates its double lane, and where people, besides strolling, also use this space to exercise, walk, or take their pets under the shade of the large trees that grow there.

Over the years urbanization has grown and several residential areas have emerged, Miramar, Flores, and Siboney being some of the most elegant, with large mansions and spacious luxury apartments. It is precisely in this space where I am, in the Flores district, and from this point where I stand you can see the church of Saint Thomas of Villanueva. This was, in the past century, a Catholic university chapel and has recently been restored, since for a long time it was abandoned and unused.

The church was closed at the time of my tour, but even so I was able to photograph its exterior, classic and elegant. It is currently consecrated as the parish of Saint Thomas of Villanueva and Saint Charbel.

On its exterior there is still preserved, as a reminder of what it was in its beginnings, the old statue of Saint Thomas, located in a garden extension in front of the doors. It was decided to leave it as it was, without carrying out any restoration, so only the body of the figure can be distinguished since the head is missing.

The church rises as the tallest building in the area, with its great tower competing in height with the royal palms that surround it. It is very pleasant to see this chapel completely renewed and serving the community, something that further beautifies this avenue, which continues to be the most beautiful in the capital.

It is always very pleasant to walk through this space of the city, peaceful and where vegetation and urban architecture complement each other in a harmonious and simple way.

It's a shame you weren't able to take pictures of the inside of the church, but its charm still comes through thanks to your excellent photos.
