St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City

IMG_20251016_102426.jpg

Greetings to the entire Worldmappin community!. I'm very excited to share a little more about my trip to Vatican City, where I participated in several events as a tenor member of my choral group last October. This time, I want to share my experience inside St. Peter's Basilica, which in my opinion is the most important and impressive Catholic church in the world. There are many reasons for this, and that's why I'll start by sharing an image of Michelangelo's Pietà. If you'd like to see more of my experience, you can visit my post from a month ago where I focused on St. Peter's Square.

To maintain order, everyone enters St. Peter's Basilica from the right, so if you're going to visit this impressive place, keep in mind that this important work of art, carved in marble approximately 1500 years ago, is the first thing you'll see in the Basilica as you enter and turn to your right. From the moment you enter, you'll be captivated by the beauty and magnitude of the place, and it would be very easy, amidst the hustle and bustle of the tourists, to walk right past it without even noticing it's there, since all the colors are earthy tones and it's behind a large glass panel that, with the light from the windows opposite, could easily be overlooked.

The place is full of corridors in every corner, overflowing with art and an abundance of elegance enhanced by the color gold. It's truly a visual feast; the floor is art, the walls are art, the ceiling is art, and then there are the works of art and the tombs of the popes. The great thing is that St. Peter's Basilica is so incredibly vast that everything fits perfectly, and nothing feels crowded. Everything has its own space, and everything has its own symbolism. The very shape of the basilica facing the square has its purpose; everything here is designed with the utmost intelligence, a testament to the collaborative work of so many artists and architects of the past and those who continue to maintain it today.

Although I'm a musician, the art form that has always impressed me the most is marble sculpture. I love Greek mythology and have always wanted to see so many famous works from that period, but Rome has given me a wonderful gift; there's possibly more of it here than anywhere else. The details of human bodies carved in white marble are a passion of mine; I can spend hours observing them and admiring the relief. It's not just St. Peter's Basilica that holds this treasure; in the square in front, there were also other sculptures carved in stone. In fact, as you walk around the outside of the basilica, you continue to see magnificent stone carvings—I'll have to dedicate a future post to those, as well as the Vatican Museums, because in this city, the art is endless. I came and went, and I probably only saw less than 50% of what the city has to offer...

Although my wife and I had La Pietà on our list of places to see in the Vatican, the heart of this place is in the center, where the baldachin stands over the tomb of Saint Peter, directly in front of the main altar at the back and beneath the grand and imposing main dome, which you can explore on foot—and it's not a quick or easy walk, because nothing in St. Peter's Basilica is small. Here are some pictures of this wonderful and sacred place:

The Baldachin

As a Catholic and as someone with limited financial resources, this trip meant fulfilling a dream that I probably wouldn't have been able to afford on my own in the near future. It was part of a concert tour where I had the honor of being selected among many musicians. If there's anyone who takes sacred music repertoire very seriously, it's me, so it was the right place and the perfect time. I must confess that, in addition to being the main seat of the Catholic Church, it's also a huge museum that receives thousands of tourists every day. You won't find an atmosphere of peace and holiness there; you have to carry that in your heart to ignore the chaos around you and fully experience being in the place where the Catholic Church was founded... Thank you for reading 🙏
