El Foro and Hotel Medea, Mérida, Spain
Almost two years ago, at the beginning of spring, I traveled through the city of Mérida and visited Badajoz in Extremadura as part of our musical tour of Spain. It was to be our first concert, but it turned out to be a very eventful day in terms of time. I remember that the soundcheck was many hours before the concert, and the hotel was quite far away, so the best I could see of the city center was from my window on the bus. I have some photos from the journey that I haven't been able to share yet, but they show a bit of the tranquility enjoyed by the people who live there.
It's strange to visit a place and not explore it thoroughly. I remember there was a river running through the city, the Guadiana River, and that we were in the closest city to Portugal of all the places we were going to visit on the Iberian Peninsula. The best part of seeing the river from afar was appreciating the landscape, the interplay of the clouds and the bridges over the water; they were dreamlike views, and almost all the buildings were white, which I loved—there was no visual clutter. In the end, the area we explored most was the Golf Guadiana.

We passed through Mérida twice, but since it wasn't one of our destinations, I had to be content with admiring the beautiful architecture and the Albarregas stream from afar. I was very impressed to see solar panels all along the road between the two towns. The golf course area is really remote and very exclusive; we took many photos there in front of the hotel, both before and after the concert. These were also the southernmost places we visited on our tour, so the weather was warm, truly spring-like, unlike the northern cities like Oviedo or Burgos, where the weather hadn't even realized winter was over 😅
In the city center, the place I explored most was the beautiful and imposing Badajoz Congress Palace, the venue for our first concert in Spain and, honestly, one of the stages I'd been longing to visit. I've already published a post about this concert hall, but I had a few photos I wanted to share now so you can appreciate its facade, corridors, and seating area. Beautiful architecture and a special place to visit if you have the chance to go to Badajoz.
Yes, it was just one day, a busy day, and a day when I perhaps missed the true essence of the city, but I can magically say that I visited this place and was captivated, just like every town life has allowed me to discover since childhood. It seemed to me one of the most peaceful cities in Spain, and it wasn't extremely cold, so it must be a great place to live in this corner of Europe. I hope you enjoyed these pictures; I had saved them for a special post, and just today we were rehearsing the music we sang in Badajoz, and so many memories came flooding back... This photographic journey through memories was both fitting and necessary 🙏
