Los Dos Caminos, Caracas, Venezuela

Even though it lies on the other side of the city, that day I looked out the window, saw the intense blue of the sky and the beauty of the fluffy clouds, and knew that it wouldn't be a day to stay at home. The best part is that my wife is always up for embarking on any new adventure right alongside me. I didn't know if we would just go for a walk, head out for some sweets, grab lunch, or catch a movie; but life led us to an area of ​​Caracas that we rarely visit these days—specifically, Los Dos Caminos. In fact, a large portion of our outing took place at the Millennium Shopping Center, the beautiful building you can see on the cover of this post.

Miranda Square:

There is a great deal of hustle and bustle in this popular and historic district of Caracas. Los Dos Caminos is home to a metro station, a Metrobús stop, major avenues, shopping centers, parks, and public squares; in fact, the photographs I have shared above were taken at Plaza Miranda—a spot I had always admired from a distance whenever I visited the nearby shopping mall. However, as I wanted to capture a good shot of the mall's façade, I ventured into the square itself, where an imposing statue of Francisco de Miranda stands alongside the fountains that bear his name. It wasn't a hot day, so stepping into the square on that particular occasion was absolutely perfect.

I haven't visited this plaza at night, but I imagine that—since it lacks many trees and features only a few palm trees—many people avoid visiting it while the sun is shining intensely. In reality, however, one could sit there without suffering any ill effects; the clouds were doing their job. Since everything was close at hand, we ventured into the shopping mall, entering through its main façade—an iconic building with a peculiar architectural style that, when viewed from above, looks like a massive triangle lying across this part of Caracas. Inside the mall, we were able to do some shopping, had lunch, and even went to the movies. We spent many hours of that Sunday right there.

The Millennium Shopping Center:

I mention this last point because, for those of us who don't own a car, the easiest way to enter is through the back of the shopping center; the rear entrances connect directly to all the bus routes and the metro. In fact—as I noted regarding the Plaza Miranda area I shared above—the main entrance isn't exactly accessible, though it is undoubtedly the best spot for taking photos! 😅 Upon entering through the main doors, you immediately take in the venue's five levels and its unusual architecture. It appears chaotic—and perhaps it is, to some extent—yet its entire structure proves quite logical if you analyze it closely. Visually, stepping inside feels like entering a space completely unlike any other shopping mall in the city.

If you are an architecture enthusiast, then you are sure to enjoy the Millennium Shopping Center in Los Dos Caminos. It is a special—and almost mandatory—stop, and not merely within the city's eastern district; indeed, it ranks as one of the capital's most iconic, visited, and frequently mentioned landmarks. In fact, I believe that one of the best movie theaters in Caracas is located right here—at the Cines Unidos complex on the top floor. Modernity and beauty are the defining characteristics of this area, which happens to be situated just a stone's throw from Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda Park—better known as Parque del Este. Moreover, located right behind the shopping center is a transport hub that can take you to Parque Los Chorros; thus, if you set out from this spot, these two special, lush green spaces become—in a sense—interconnected.
