Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Italy

(edited)

Happy start to the week to all travel lovers on Hive! Today I want to mark a new place on our world map, specifically Trastevere, a beautiful and elegant neighborhood in Rome. Oddly enough, I didn't go there to eat, only to sing with our choir, and it's located on the other side of the Tiber River. Many iconic restaurants are in the area, but most of my time was spent exploring the Minor Basilica of Santa Cecilia, which stands majestically among its narrow streets with its ancient architecture.

As you can see in these images, the Basilica is located in an area specifically designated for it. The first thing you notice from the street is a small square, Piazza Santa Cecilia, and upon entering, you find a large courtyard, filled with shrubs and flowers, and a beautiful, ancient facade in the center, surrounded by several rooms belonging to the church. This place dates back to the 5th century, and the first impression the architecture gives is of medieval times, evident in the art, colors, and design. For example, I was particularly impressed by the church tower.

Choir Rehearsal Room:

Upon entering the courtyard, to the left, there is a large hall used by musicians for rehearsals. In fact, there are already musicians who perform in this Minor Basilica, and they were the ones who invited us to give our best concert in Rome. Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians, as it is said that she sang during her marriage and then remained chaste, which would later lead to her martyrdom. The saint's remains are located here, just below the main altar in small crypts that rest beneath the images I'm sharing with you. It was very meaningful for us to sing in this place, and it makes us very happy to celebrate our day, the day of musicians, the feast day of Saint Cecilia, a global recognition of our profession.

The Temple:

After so many hours, I finally entered the church, and wow, it's a beautiful, imposing, and even modern place, nothing like what you see outside. The walls are pearl-colored, but they're covered in paintings and all kinds of art in every corner. It's one of the most brightly lit Catholic churches I've ever seen, and although I always talk about the acoustics of every church I've visited, I swear this place has the best acoustics in the world, or at least of what little I've experienced. In Rome, only 22 members of our choir sing, but in this place, we sounded like we were back in the '90s. I remember that what impressed me most was the sculpture of Saint Cecilia, right above the spot where her remains rest. That marble sculpture by Stefano Maderno was created in 1599.

Art in the Basilica:

I think it's already unfair to say which was my favorite moment in Rome, besides being difficult; so let's just say the whole trip was one of the best experiences of my life 😅 The Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is generally open all day, although they close briefly at midday. One of the nuns told me that the only thing to plan for is when people want to visit the crypts, as it requires extra care and attention, which is why we couldn't see the remains of Saint Cecilia, although I later found out that our director and one of the tenors were able to go down there—perks of being a leader 🤣 Although it's not one of the biggest and most famous churches in Rome, Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is a place to note if you visit the city. Besides having history, relics, crypts, and lots of art, it's not just any Catholic church; like most in Rome, it's one of the most important. I hope you enjoyed it...
