Happy start to the weekend, everyone! I've pinned many Catholic churches from my country and from my time in Rome to Worldmappin, but my passion for these historic and special places is unstoppable 😅 Today I want to share a bit about the first basilica I visited in Italy, literally my first stroll in the city. It's the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four most important and highest-ranking basilicas in Rome, on par with St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and its counterparts, St. John Lateran and St. Paul Outside the Walls (I didn't get to visit the latter two)...

He fijado en Worldmappin muchos templos católicos de mi país y de mi experiencia en la ciudad de Roma, pero mi pasión por estos lugares históricos y especiales es imparable 😅 Hoy quiero compartir un poco de la primera Basílica que conocí en Italia, literalmente el primer paseo en la ciudad. Se trata de la Basílica Santa María la Mayor, una de las cuatro más importantes en Roma y de más alto rango en la iglesia, al nivel de la Basílica de San Pedro en el Vaticano y sus iguales San Juan de Letrán y San Pablo Extramuros, (estas últimas dos no pude conocerlas)...

It's also known as the Liberian Basilica, named after the Pope who commissioned its construction around the year 300 AD, and is also called the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Nevi (Saint Mary of the Snows). This was one of the main reasons I included it in our itinerary for our trip to Rome. Legend says that the Virgin Mary herself indicated the location for the church in a dream, and the story goes that on August 5th, 358 AD, in the middle of summer, a snowfall blanketed that spot. There's more to this beautiful story, but I don't recall it perfectly right now; you can look it up, though, because it's quite interesting. Since then, Catholics have celebrated that date at this church, the first and most important in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

También es conocida como Basílica Liberiana por el Papa que la propuso construir, más o menos en los años 300 después de Cristo, y también se conoce con el nombre de Basílica Santa María de las Nieves, y esto fue uno de los mayores motivos que me hicieron planificarla en nuestro recorrido por la ciudad de Roma. Se dice que a través de sueños la misma Virgen María indicaría dónde se debía construir el templo y la historia cuenta que el 5 de Agosto del año 358, en pleno verano cayó una nevada sobre ese lugar, hay más de esa hermosa historia, pero justo ahora no la recuerdo a perfección, pero pueden buscarla porque es muy interesante. Desde entonces los católicos celebran esa fecha en este templo y la primera y más importante en todo el mundo que está dedicada a la Virgen María.

The second reason that prompted me to visit this church was the memory of my beloved Pope Francis. The Pope visited this Basilica constantly and, in fact, requested that his remains be brought here upon his death. Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio had a profound Marian devotion, and it was a great honor for me to visit the place where his remains rest, even though I didn't have the opportunity to see him in life. It's worth noting that he was the one who approved the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Sister Carmen Rendiles, the first two Venezuelan saints, and that ceremony was the reason for our visit to Rome. And between you and me, I believe that this act of sanctity is a reason for the positive changes that are taking place in Venezuela right now.

El segundo motivo que me impulsó a visitar esta iglesia fue el recuerdo de mi querido Papa Francisco. El Papa visitaba esta Basílica constantemente y de hecho pidió que llevarán sus restos aquí al fallecer. El Papa Jorge Mario Bergoglio tenía una profunda devoción mariana, y para mí fue grande visitar el lugar donde reposan sus restos, aunque no tuve oportunidad de verlo en vida. Cabe destacar que fue él quien aprobó la canonización del Doctor José Gregorio Hernández y de la Hermana Carmen Rendiles, los dos primeros santos venezolanos, y fue esa ceremonia el motivo de nuestra visita a Roma, y aquí entre nos, creo que ese acto de santidad es motivos de los cambios positivos que se están viviendo en Venezuela justo ahora.

Visiting the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is completely free; you just need to plan ahead and visit during the appropriate hours. I must admit, though, that I did have to wait in a short queue to get in, as it's very popular with tourists. One of the main reasons for visiting is its proximity to Termini Station, the heart of Rome's public transport network. However, inside the basilica, I also joined a short queue specifically to visit the tomb where Pope Francis's remains are interred. It hasn't even been a year since his death, and it's understandable that many people still come to pay their respects. Furthermore, the third reason I planned my visit to this basilica is that it houses a great relic for our Catholic faith: a small piece of straw and wood from Jesus's manger.

Visitar la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor es totalmente gratis, solo hay que tomar previsiones y visitarla en el horario correspondiente, pero debo aceptar que hice una pequeña cola para entrar, y es que son muchos los turistas que la visitan. Uno de los principales motivos es su cercanía con Termini, el corazón del transporte público en Roma; sin embrago, dentro del templo también hice una pequeña cola exclusiva para visitar la tumba donde están los restos del Papa Francisco, no ha pasado ni un año y es normal que aún reciba a muchas personas con ganas de hacerle un pequeño homenaje. Por otra parte, el tercer motivo que me llevó a planificar mi visita a esta Basílica es que aquí hay una gran reliquia para nuestra fe católica, y es un pequeño trozo de la paja y la madera del pesebre de Jesús.

Sagrada Cuna:

The Holy Crib is located directly beneath the main altar, right where the remains of Pope Pius IX rest. It's beautiful to be down there, as you can see a statue of the Pope, which I mentioned earlier, in a praying position. Directly in front of the statue is the Nativity crypt with his relics, protected by glass and silver and visible to all tourists. This is a place I consider very holy, and it certainly feels that way. Furthermore, you can admire three large chapels within the Basilica: the Sistine Chapel, the Pauline Chapel, and the Sforza Chapel. All are grand and imposing, with much art and history to offer. La Sagrada Cuna se encuentra exactamente debajo del altar principal, justo donde reposan los restos del Papa Pius IX. Es hermoso estar ahí abajo, ya que se puede apreciar una estatua del Papa que ya mencioné en posición de oración y justo frente a la estatua están la cripta de la natividad con sus reliquias, protegidas con cristal y plata y a la vista de todos los turistas. Este es un lugar que considero muy santo, y energéticamente se siente así. Además, se pueden apreciar tres grandes capillas dentro de la Basílica, la Capilla Sixtina, la Capilla Paulina y la Capilla Sforza. Todas grandes e imponentes y con mucho arte e historia por ofrecer. As you can see, there were many reasons why the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Nevi was a must-see for my friends and me. I generally speak very fondly of everything I encounter on my travels, letting myself be surprised by even the smallest details, but here the details don't end there. In fact, I have many more photos that couldn't even fit in this post, but I think you can appreciate from them how amazing the place is and how much it has to offer both believers and non-believers. With such a central location, I encourage you to visit it if you have the opportunity to travel to Rome. I'm sure you won't regret walking through these peaceful aisles...

Como verán, fueron múltiples motivos por los cuales la Basílica de Santa María de las Nieves era un destino obligatorio para mis amigos y para mí. Generalmente hablo con mucho cariño de todo lo que me encuentro en mis viajes, me dejo sorprender por cualquier pequeño detalle, pero aquí los detalles no acaban, y de hecho tengo muchas más fotografías que ni siquiera pudieron entrar en este post, pero considero que pueden apreciar en ellas que el lugar es sorprendente y que tiene mucho para ofrecer a los creyentes y a los no creyentes. Con una ubicación tan central, te invito a que te permitas conocerla si tienes la oportunidad de viajar a Roma, estoy seguro que no te arrepentirás de caminar estos pasillos llenos de paz...

Finally, we went outside and took lots of photos in front of the Basilica's facade, and strolled around Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore and Piazza dell'Esquilino, right behind the church. Both squares have enormous columns, like almost all the squares in front of Roman churches. The church is imposing from every angle; visiting this area is truly an unforgettable experience. Al final salimos y nos tomamos muchas fotos frente a la fachada de la Basílica, y dimos una vuelta por la Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore y la Piazza dell' Esquilino justo detrás del templo. En ambas plazas hay enormes columnas, como en casi todas las plazas frente a iglesias romanas. El templo es imponente desde donde lo veas, realmente visitar esta zona es una experiencia inolvidable...
