I recently visited one of those places that are so impressive that you can never forget them; neither how beautiful they are, nor how they made you feel when you saw them. For the first time in my life, and after a long time, I visited the Médanos de Coro sand dunes and understood why Luis Silva's song "Venezuela" says "I am desert." Although I knew this, I had not had the privilege of seeing it with my own eyes before.

Many things happened on my trip to Coro, but one of my favorites was, honestly, getting to see new places. The truth is that this is one of my favorite activities in the world. Since I love nature, it always makes me happy when I see it, and although I have been to many different places, it never ceases to impress me with its variety and beauty. In this case, I can say that I had never seen anything like it in my life.

Hace poco estuve en uno de esos lugares que son tan impresionantes que nunca puedes olvidarlos; ni lo bonitos que son, ni tampoco lo que te hicieron sentir al verlos. Por primera vez en mi vida, y después de mucho tiempo, conocí los Médanos de Coro y con ellos la razón por la que la canción "Venezuela" de Luis Silva dice que "soy desierto" y aunque lo sabía, que no había tenido el privilegio de verlo antes con mis propios ojos.

En mi viaje a Coro pasaron muchas cosas, pero una de mis favoritas fue, honestamente, que pude conocer nuevos lugares. La verdad es que esta es una de mis actividades preferidas en el mundo. Como me encanta la naturaleza, esta siempre me hace feliz cuando la veo y, aunque conozco varios sitios diferentes, nunca deja de impresionarme con su variedad y belleza, en este caso puedo decir que nunca en mi vida había conocido algo igual.

Since we were staying about two hours and a few minutes away from Coro, the idea of visiting the sand dunes never even crossed my mind, because I knew it would be very complicated. Besides, that wasn't the purpose of our trip, but I received a wonderful gift: we didn't return home without seeing this impressive place.

Our friends agreed that, on our way back to Coro to go to the terminal and return home, we would take a detour to the sand dunes, with the sole purpose of allowing my husband and I to see them. It was a very beautiful gesture because, although I didn't say so, I had dreamed of visiting this place since I was a child and, due to various circumstances, I had not been able to. So, when they told us we would visit, I was very excited and spent the whole trip imagining what it would be like.

Como estábamos retirados de Coro como tal, a unas dos horas y unos cuantos minutos, la verdad es que pensar que conoceríamos los médanos ni siquiera me cruzó por la mente, porque sabía que sería un plan muy complicado. Además, ese no era el objetivo de nuestro viaje, pero recibí un hermoso regalo, no nos devolvimos a casa sin conocer este impresionante lugar.

Nuestros amigos se pusieron de acuerdo para que, al regresar a Coro para ir al terminal y devolvernos a casa, nos desviáramos a los médanos, esto con el único fin de que mi esposo y yo pudiéramos conocerlos. Fue un gesto muy hermoso porque, aunque no lo dije, soñaba con conocer este lugar desde niña y por diferentes circunstancias no había podido. Así que, cuando nos dijeron que lo conoceríamos, me emocioné demasiado e iba todo el camino imaginando cómo sería.

Although I have seen this place many times in photos, the truth is that seeing it in person is a totally different experience, and I can't help but wonder: How is it possible that there is so much sand in one place? A lot of questions came to mind, showing that the fact that it's there isn't so "logical." The sand is so loose, but you can still walk on it without any problem, which also doesn't make sense, and I think that made it even more special for me.

As soon as we arrived, we took off our shoes, because we were going back that day and didn't want to leave covered in sand, and we climbed this big mountain. When we reached the top, the only thing we could think of was to run and run, because being there makes you feel like a little kid; you feel free in such a spacious place with so many possibilities that you can't help but do things like that.

Si bien he visto este lugar muchas veces en fotos, la verdad es que verlo en persona es una experiencia totalmente diferente, y no puedo evitar preguntarme ¿Cómo es posible que haya tanta arena en un solo lugar? Surgieron un montón de preguntas que demuestran que el hecho de que eso esté ahí no es tan "lógico", que la arena sea tan suelta, pero que aun así puedas caminar sobre ella sin ningún problema, tampoco tiene sentido, y creo que eso para mí lo hizo mucho más especial.

​Apenas llegamos nos quitamos los zapatos, porque ese día nos devolveríamos y no queríamos irnos llenos de arena, y subimos esta gran montaña. Al llegar arriba, lo único que se nos ocurrió fue correr y correr, porque al estar ahí uno se siente como un niño pequeño; te sientes libre en un sitio tan, pero tan espacioso y con tantas posibilidades que no puedes evitar hacer cosas como esas.

The sand mountains are quite steep, almost straight, so it was a little difficult for me to climb them. I remember that the only thing I could think about the whole way up was how happy my cats would have been in that place, and I haven't changed my mind about that. We stayed there for a while, but since we were barefoot, the sand started to get hot and we couldn't walk on it anymore.

This place is about 15 minutes from the Coro terminal, which seemed super close to me, plus it's open to everyone and so quiet and immense that you feel very peaceful when you're there. I still had a lot of things left to do, like sliding down the dunes, but I'll probably do that next time I go. For now, I'm happy to have discovered such a beautiful place after so long.

Las montañas de arena son bastante empinadas, están casi rectas, así que fue un poquito trabajoso para mí subirlas. Recuerdo que lo único que pensaba en todo el camino es que mis gatos hubiesen sido muy felices en ese lugar, y no he cambiado de opinión sobre eso. Estuvimos ahí un rato, pero como estábamos descalzos, la arena comenzó a calentarse y ya no podíamos caminar más sobre ella.

Este lugar está como a unos 15 minutos del terminal de Coro, eso me pareció supercerca, además de que es un lugar abierto para todo el mundo y es tan tranquilo y tan inmenso que te sientes muy en paz al estar ahí. Aún me faltaron muchas cosas por hacer, como deslizarme por las dunas, pero la próxima vez que vaya probablemente lo haga. Por ahora, me siento feliz de haber conocido tan lindo lugar después de tanto tiempo.
